History

Established in 1987.

The Grand Deli sandwich shop was taken over by Michael Downs in July of 1987. The Deli was remodeled with a more extensive kitchen and a complete breakfast menu was added. The Grand Deli has become a true destination, a favorite among locals and perennial tourists from out of state. Mike, an avid cyclist, sponsors the Celo Pacific cycling club. The outside dining patio may look like a «Tour de France» pit stop on some weekends.

The weekend Champagne Breakfast has become legendary as the crowd says it all. Don’t mind the line at the counter… the staff is quick!

Mike was born in Frankfurt a/​m, Germany and grew up in Oceanside, Ca. OHS class of 1973– attended U.C. Berkeley and has 35 years experience in the restaurant/​hotel industry. La Costa Resort and Spa, Carlsbad, The Grand Hotel Sonnenbichl, West Germany and The Stadel restaurant in Zermatt, Switzlerland to name a few.

Mike’s wife, Adele, assists with promoting and marketing the business delivery end. She is frequently on the scene during special events. They are the parents of wonderful 8 year old twins, girl/​boy.

Great for breakfast!
I’ve been coming here for years, really consistent preparations.
I recommend the spinach, onion & feta omelette.
Don’t forget to ask for your complimentary glass of champagne on the weekends.

No frills deli that offers breakfast and lunch options. Tried their club sandwich the first time I visited and it gave me a stomach ache. Had the breakfast sandwich with sausage the second time around and it was pretty good. Although nearly ten bucks for just the sandwich and some hash browns seems steep.

The sandwich with a side and chips was easily enough to share. It was a good turkey sandwich. The potato salad was decent enough.
The staff was friendly; two employees checked to see how we liked our lunch.
One big improvement — the employees behind the counter seemed to be socializing rather than working. It appeared that only one of the four employees was making sandwiches. It would cut the wait time quite a bit if they were all making sandwiches.

My husband and I were excited to try this place out! But we were VERY disappointed with the quality of food. I had a sandwich and he got the Eggs Benedict. Both were not very good at all. I had to send my sandwich back because the bread tasted like it had been sitting out and was so dry. After telling the waiter about my sandwich I HAD TO GO BACK AND WAIT IN LINE to reorder while my husband sat alone for 15 minutes eating alone… It was really bad customer service and we didn’t even get an apology or sandwich comped. Poor food and service.

I’ve had the pleasure of visiting this establishment a couple times and that’s a big fan of going out for breakfast this is a fantastic place to go. nestled in downtown Carlsbad, eatery certainly has my vote.
This is a small little place that actually has a convenience store attached to it mostly drinks. one thing that was a little unusual is you do order from the counter and then gets heated but aside from that it is everything you would expect from a quaint little breakfast nook.
The food is delicious and the prices are pretty reasonable all things considered. last time I went I got scrambled eggs and this might not seem like a big deal but everybody on Unilocal I think has gone out and had some terrible scrambled eggs in their day. The scrambled eggs were absolutely perfect I loved them I also thought the coffee was absolutely fantastic something that’s pretty important to me first thing in the morning.
If you’re in the neighborhood make your way to this delicious little spot I guarantee you will love it.

We go here at least once a week because our business is across the street. They accommodate special requests, like extra crispy hashbrowns, which I love. Forget that one star review on the Carlsbad Street Faire day. The choices that day were clearly posted. They served hundreds of people in 8 hours, kept the line moving, tables clean, and a choice of 8 or 10 sandwiches @ $ 8.95 — $ 9.95 plus the usual breakfast items. I think there were 8 or 9 guys behind the counter keeping up with the orders.
The landlord is raising their rent and, sadly, they will be closing at the end of the summer. For a truly pleasurable meal under the big trees, don’t miss out on the Grand Deli.

I love this place, I work near by and often take a quick walk here for lunch or swing by for coffee. The staff is amazing & super friendly, the food is delish and fresh and this place is the perfect little corner deli to take some friends to after a day at the beach.

Holy cow, what a rip off. I’m all about supporting local businesses, but $ 47 dollars for 4 sandwiches, 4 bags of chips, and one drink. Three of the sandwiches with roast beef had two slices of meat and one piece of cheese. The counter guy also said they were only making certain sandwiches, but the sign out front during the Carlsbad Fair had all the sandwiches that they weren’t making, a little bait and switch if you ask me. Never again. The worst thing is, hardly anybody was in line for them to make a decent sandwich.

Great people here but food lacked flavor and originality. If you’re just looking for the ordinary bacon, eggs, and hashbrown, this is your spot. Their potatoes are pretty good though! You can add champagne to your meal for $ 1 but it’s served in a dinky little plastic wine cup. Their orange juice is not great either. However, service is good. Our service was a nice sweet girl who was very attentive and polite! Food came out pretty fast too! Other than that, we stopped here only once during our week stay in Carlsbad. Come here if you want just the average cheap breakfast.

After looking for a great deli on Unilocal in carlsbad, we decided this one looked great.
We ordered two Philly cheese steak sandwiches which were, unfortunately, one of the worst we’ve had. It was extremely dry! One was made with hardly anything in it and the other significantly more, so the consistency isn’t great. The macaroni salad was swimming in cream and mayonnaise (I uploaded a photo!).
Overall, I’m sorry to say the food wasn’t great in our experience but the guy behind the counter was nice!
Disappointing but fairly cheap.

The Grand Deli has been our go to place for breakfast for almost 10 years. We love the people, prices, and food. They serve everything from SoCal food to southern comfy food. On the weekend they even have some champagne for the wife. What can be better?

Came here for lunch In Carlsbad w the folks. A deli w seats inside and out. For 6.95 u get a sandwich, chips and soda (all though guy was nice enough to let me take a water bottle) I took turkey w sourdough bread and put in lettuce, tomatoe, and pickles. It certainly hit the spot, tried the macaroni salad too and it was nice. A good fast bite option if ur in Carlsbad village by the beach.

I had a turkey sandwich on sourdough. I thought it was simply «ok.» It was somewhat bland and not really that sizable either. For the price of $ 7 – 8 i think a better value can be found at a place like Sprouts!
Service is spirited and excellent however. Location is on a busy but beautiful street in downtown Carlsbad.
It’s OK, but I’ll try another place when in that part of the county.

I stumbled upon the Grand Deli a few years back on a trip to visit a friend in Carlsbad. It’s so good, I often go back for breakfast multiple times during each vacation! Here’s my thoughts on the place:
Atmosphere– the atmosphere is not the reason to go to this restaurant. Although it’s fine, offering both indoor and outdoor seating, it’s generally utilitarian in nature. It serves the purpose and that’s about it.
Food– we’ve never had a thing we don’t like. Our favorite is the steak and eggs. It’s very reasonably priced and the give you a huge portion. Literally, though, anything you order will be delicious.
Service– now this is clearly a forte of theirs. The service is always impeccable. The folks that work here engage in conversation with you, use your name, and seem like they genuinely enjoy their job. They are amazing so make sure to tip them well!
It’s great to see a family run establishment be so great. If you’re in Carlsbad, do yourself a favor and enjoy breakfast or lunch here!
