Blue Licks Battlefield State Resort Park

This park is not very big and is about the same size as possibly General Butler State Park, if this park isn’t smaller than General Butler State Park in size. This park actually encases what was one of the final Revolutionary War battle sites in the US.
Granted, what is actually where the main chunk battle field isn’t very big, (because the lodge sits on top of part of it now), but it’s worth seeing for one of those «little known pieces of American history,» if you’re interested in seeing historical and educational stuff like that with your family. The view from the actual battlefield is an interesting one as well. This is where Simon Kenton and Daniel Boone fought together against the British in what is now (more or less) what could be considered Northern Kentucky.
There’s a «Pioneer Museum» on the other side of the battlefield from the lodge that has people in period costume that show what kind of clothing, weapons and other related things that people used back in the 1700s in Kentucky. To get in to see the museum, it’s $ 4 per adult and like $ 2 – 3 for children between the ages of like 4 – 12 and children under 4 are free, (cash only admission though). There’s also different exhibits in the museum that show natural history and things about the Indians that lived in the area in the 1700s and 1800s.
Speaking of the afore mentioned Lodge, the accommodations are very nice and overlook the mountains near Mount Olivet, Kentucky. The lodge is broken down in to four buildings. The «main building» is like the cafeteria; the front desk and main offices; A gift shop and meeting rooms. The other three buildings are two floors of guest rooms that have private balconies and secure/​separate front entry doors for each room. The room rates aren’t very expensive to stay in them, (I only paid approximately $ 89 Plus tax on the AAA rate for one night. My hubby and I stayed two nights, incidentally). We stayed in a room that had two double beds that were very clean and comfortable.
I’d definitely be back to this site, if I wanted some peace and quiet, while I get away from the «big city.» This state park is also located very near where Miss America 2000 (the former Miss Heather Renee French) grew up as well, if you’re interested in seeing places like that as well.

The natural beauty of this place is astounding. Breathtaking, even. Killer trails for hiking and tons and tons of history, given that this is a Revolutionary War battleground. Old structures, graveyards, and all sorts of interesting historical context…
But camping here? While the bathrooms were well-​maintained, we were super disappointed to find that this KY state park caters primarily to the RV camping set. «Primative» (or tent) campers had just one cramped area in which to set up, featuring maybe ten sites total that were pretty much out in the open and on top of one another. We were… the only folks without kids. You do the math.
There’s also really nothing around, so come fully — and I mean fully — prepared. You’ll drive over a half hour before you find a grocery store, and this county? It’s a dry one. Lots of ‘em in KY are, so make sure you’re equipped with your campfire bourbon beforehand.
So three, right down the middle stars, because while the hiking and natural beauty and all of that was certainly fantastic, I definitely wouldn’t stay here again due to the limited nature of their tent campsite offerings and the limited nature of anything else to do, buy, or see in the area.

Camping has always been enjoyable here. Small campground, so make reservations prior to staying. Great for kids!

This restaurant is at a state park and hotel complex near Lexington, and has a full-​service restaurant, with special treats like Seafood Night periodically. We stopped in on a Monday noon in August, and had their salad & soup buffet, which proved to be one of the best salad bars we’ve encountered in years. Everything was fresh; everything looked appetizing; everything we tried was very good. Service was quick, pleasant and efficient; cost was very reasonable ($ 67 for six people)…and we would definitely return for a full dinner someday. If you’re in the area, it’s a wonderful alternative to fast food or pizza, and the place is beautifully sited among trees and hills.
