Specialties

My business specializes in meeting the real life self defense needs of people who need to learn situation appropriate self defense quickly. The art that I teach, Anjing Banfa, has been designed specifically to save lives in worst case scenarios. I personally create custom self defense programs to meet the needs of individuals who feel they can’t make the time commitment to learning an entire martial art. These are people ranging from doormen who need to learn to control people without hurting them, to male or female real estate agents or other professionals who need to know how to prevent or survive the most serious violent attacks. I also teach small group martial arts lessons twice a week for those individuals who are interested in learning the entire art of Anjing Banfa. Please see my website, or give me a call for more information.

History

Established in 1994.

Don’t Be Dead Custom Self Defense and Martial Arts was created out of a need the martial arts industry had not been meeting. Most schools want people to learn an entire martial art, or «the basics», before they are willing to teach serious things like gun disarms, knife fighting, what to do if someone swings a baseball bat at you, etc. Generally, after years of training you’ll find out they aren’t really good at those skills anyway, because that wasn’t what their art was designed for.

It occurred to me that a major issue in our society is time pressure. Many people would love to know specific life saving skills, but most people just don’t have the time to learn an entire art. So, why not teach people what they want to know, when they want to know it? Really, there’s no good reason. So, I started Don’t Be Dead so you can learn specific life saving skills on your own time schedule.

As a kid in Solana Beach in the 1970’s I got my first martial arts lessons from a friend on the playground who knew a little Judo. It may not have been really effective, but it was fun. Later, after meeting my first bully, I started taking karate at the local Boys and Girls Club. I took it for awhile, but eventually found it just wasn’t useful for me. Finally, in 1988 I met Master Peter Brusso who taught me his very effective and street smart martial art Anjing Banfa. I began teaching professionally in 1994 after receiving my black belt. In 2006 I received the rank of «master», or 10th degree black belt. I’ve studied a variety of other martial arts over the years, but I keep coming back to the real life survival lessons of Anjing Banfa.
