Backwoods Inn

I came here to celebrate my grandparents 60^th wedding anniversary and my parents 36^th wedding anniversary. My parents got engaged at Backwoods 36 years ago so it was a very special occasion. I was very disappointed with our experience. We waited over ten minutes before a waiter came to our table. I ordered a new york steak and my dad ordered the ribeye steak. Both steaks were room temperature and no had flavor at all. I actually used steak sauce because the steak had no taste. Their stuffed backed potatoes were amazing as always. The potatoes were very hot so I am assuming the steaks sat for awhile and waited for potatoes to come out. For 30 plus dollar steaks I was very unhappy. My family has always had good experiences here but this time was very disappointing. It will definitely be awhile before I come back.

Came here on a Friday night last minute, not sure if we would get a table without a reservation. We were seated quickly — the restaurant was half full or less. I thought that was a little strange, but it was nice not having to wait. Ordered a carafe of wine. With a frown, the waitress says «Can I see… Your (points to my girlfriend only) ID». When the wine arrived, it tasted off and a little vinegary.
We ordered a filet mignon dish, and an appetizer, to share. While she was taking our order, the waitress just seemed tired and annoyed. Granted, it was later in the evening, but still…
The dish came with soup and a baked potato. The soup arrived first and tasted great.
At one point while we were waiting for the rest of the food, the waitress was a few feet away, talking to another employee. Maybe she thought she was talking quietly, but we could easily hear her complaining about the patrons in the booth next to us. That couple wasn’t loud or making a scene so I’m not exactly sure what the problem was. The overall vibe of this place was odd. I don’t recall any music playing overhead, but if there was, it was very quiet.
The steak was good, but not amazing. Baked potato was really good.
When the bill came, the waitress puts it very deliberately on my side (at the extreme end of large half-​circle booth that we were sitting in the center of, so that I had to stretch and reach for it). Since we usually split our bill, we simply put both our credit cards in the sleeve like we do at all restaurants.
The waitress picked it up and left, but quickly returned. «There’s 2 cards in here which one do you want it on.» … My girlfriend and I looked at each other. We both said «oh just split it». This is something we do often at restaurants and are never met with a confused/​disappointed look and «oh… okayy…» that we got from her as she slowly backed away. Newsflash: it’s not the 50’s anymore.
All in all, the food was good but the atmosphere and especially the unfriendly and awkward service from the waitress made us uncomfortable. We will not be returning.

This used to be our favorite Steakhouse for the 30 years butt we went for their lunch special prime rib my daughter ordered hers medium rare and it just had the ring cast smell that you could imagine we could smell it from where we were eating so we told the waitress the manager denied it we didn’t even want another one we paid for it and she acted like we were trying to get a free meal but we asked her to even go check it out herself I mean this meat was rotten they must have left it out too long it was just terrible the way the manager treated us we just wanted them to know so they wouldn’t serve that bad meat to someone else the rest of had different things I guess if you would have had it medium well or well done you wouldn’t be able to smell it anyways it’s so sad because we have friends that work there and we don’t go there anymore

As someone of my age in the late 20’s this place wouldn’t be somewhere you want to go… But the food is amazing! The burger was so yummie and the fries are nice and crispy! The place is older and has a western style theme to it… But it’s something different you want to try

Wow! Totally savored the extra cut of prime rib tonight in a very pleasant throw-​back steakhouse environment. Stuffed baked potato, clam chowder, and salad was delicious. Chefs cooked it to perfection. We topped it off with an amazing slice of carrot cake. Thank you to our server, Alan, for the kind and professional attention. Will be coming back.

I only came here for cocktails, but it was awesome. The restaurant is really old and romantic. I ordered a vodka martini and it was perfect. It came with the tiny little bottle with extra martini. I can’t wait to come back for food.

It was our first time here last night …
We read the reviews on Unilocal and some were great and some were not so great, but we decided to try it … and so happy we did! I loved the décor and atmosphere and learning that it had been there for over 50-​years. Our Server was AMAZING! Lucy … she was the BEST! We were crazing Prime Rib.
My husband had the larger cut and I had the 12 oz (which seemed so much bigger — Great portions).
The Prime Rib came with Salad and Stuffed potato and garlic bread and salad with homemade salad dressings. Everything was absolutely delicious! I had Ranch and my husband had the blue cheese. Garlic bread and stuffed potato were Great … everything was just so delicious. My Prime Rib was so tender and moist and flavorful. I had ordered my piece a little more on the well-​done side … it was perfect! I am giving it a 5 star … because Backwoods Inn … our meal last night was a 5 Star! Everything was so delicious and perfectly seasoned and cooked and the staff … were so lovely… Lucy made our dinner so relaxing and definitely wanting to go back again! Thank you Backwoods … for a perfect dinner & evening!

I love this place. I have lived in Canyon Country for a long time now, and Backwoods Inn has always been one of my favorite places to go. The staff, (especially Kelly), are always so nice, and the food is always amazing.
It hurts my heart a little that there are any bad reviews for this place at all. The coconut shrimp, clam chowder, their salads with the best ranch dressing ever, the steaks, the potatoes, the PRIME RIB and their LOBSTER! UGH!!! Always SO, SO good!!!

Absolutely delicious food, great service, and an old school ambiance not to be forgotten.
My husband loved his steak and even finished off my prime rib. Can’t wait to Backwoods it again.

I’m not a big ‘red meat’ eater but the stuffed burger was amazing and I LOVED the stuffed potato! So yummy

After having some good food and spending $ 200 really don’t appreciate being ran after outside the restaurant to see if my son’s to go cup (also the kids drink cups) is filled with alcohol. Don’t enjoy feeling like you’re doing something wrong at a family dinner on Easter weekend after dropping that kinda cash. Probably won’t be back

Love this place! The atmosphere is old school, service is great, prices are reasonable and most importantly… the food is awesome! I recommend the prime rib and the a broasted chicken… oh, and don’t forget the twice baked potato on the side! Been here several times and we enjoy it every time!

Excellent again, great service, Lucy the Waitress is great, N.Y. Steak, twice baked, mushrooms, salad with blue cheese, and of course cheese toast with American cheese, cocktails, and a Backwoods coffee.

I’ve driven by this place countless times on my way to Rowher Flats for some off roading. Finally, got a chance to go here for dinner. Loved it ! Old school throw back, sawdust on floor, dark, lots of red, etc. Waitress Patty was great too! I had prime rib which I’ve been craving with baked potato and clam chowder… yum all around. I eat red meat once every three to four month. Only criticism was my extra dry martini had a dash too much vermouth. I’ll be back.

Ooh man!!! Was this place delicious! The steaks don’t have any seasoning because they really are that good! Salt and pepper are conveniently set on your table to shake away if you must. The stuffed makes potato are what dreams are made of! My rib eye was cooked to perfection! The onion soup was a bit on the salty for my taste but nothing remotely close to complain about. My 5 year old skipped the kids meals all together and ordered the halibut. She loved it! My husband was stuffed but kept sneaking bits and peices of her plate because it was that good! We will def be back. The service was awesome as well. Order the garlic bread!

The salad was good… that’s about it.
My husband and I waited 30 mins for a table when we were told on the phone minutes prior to arriving there was no wait. We both ordered the ribeye and there was no flavor. NONE. Not sure if it was an off night or maybe the other guests who gave positive feeback for their steaks have different standards. Service was not horrible… but not great by any means. Wouldn’t recommend or come back.

It’s been a while since I’ve visited here, but as we were driving on the freeway not too far away I remembered it was here and decided to head over for one item – the broasted chicken. If you have never eaten broasted chicken, then you should come and try it because the result of the way it gets cooked is something that is piping hot, juicy, not greasy, and overall just really delicious! I don’t know of any other restaurant that prepares it this way. It takes a little bit of time to cook, probably 20 minutes or so, but it is well worth the wait. With some good company and a salad, it doesn’t seem that long before you’re chomping into something really great.

I’ve driven by this place many time on my way to school and never thought I’d eat there. It always seems deserted. Well, we tried it last night and I was quite surprised!
I’m a HUGE ribeye lover so when the boyfriend said they specialize in steaks, I was down!
I ordered the ribeye and the boyfriend ordered a T-​Bone. I opted for salad, and the stuffed potato. He opted for clam chowder and a baked potato. The salad was meh. The lettuce was brown, but mostly hidden by the overwhelming amount of ranch dressing. It was smothered and I didn’t really eat it. He liked his clam chowder.
Now the steaks! They weren’t seasoned at all which was rather surprising. We both had to add salt to our steaks. His T-​Bone was just okay. It was good but nothing to brag about. My Ribeye that I ordered as medium first came out rare, and I sent it back to be re-​fired. When it came back oh man! It was delicious!!! I ate it all.
Overall, we’ll be back if we don’t feel like making steaks ourselves. The atmosphere was a little odd, and I probably won’t try anything other than the ribeye.

Came here the other night with my husband’s family. I liked everything about this place except the décor/​ambiance/​look. I think the establishment was going for a rustic, country vibe, but it just seemed shabby and dingy to me. Other than that complaint, everything else was great. We had a reservation and got seated as soon as we walked in. Some of us ordered alcoholic beverages and I must complement the bartender for making such strong, excellent drinks. I hate ordering a $ 10 drink that has next to no alcohol and asking myself what am I paying for. This was not the case here, it was well worth the money spent. The food was also excellent. I went for the spaghetti. I’ve had better spaghetti sauce, but it was still good, and I know, I know, its my fault for ordering spaghetti at a steak place. My spaghetti came with a cup of soup, vegetable beef. It was very delicious, especially the broth. My husband got a (broiled?) breaded chicken dish. I tried his and we both loved it. The chicken was cooked to perfection. Others at our table loved what they ordered (various steak dishes). We also ordered the garlic bread (very yummy with pieces of garlic sprinkled on the bread). Our waitress was attentive and friendly. The bathroom was clean (a huge bonus). The prices were high but the portions were huge, so it was worth it.
I would come here again and recommend it to others.

The continued search for the perfect date night restaurant brought me and my better-​half to Backwoods Inn last Saturday. Walking in, our first impression is that the restaurant is very rustic, with sawdust on the floors and fun antiques and vintage collectables on the walls. A quick trip to the bar before dinner and we were greeted by a very bright a friendly bartender (a common theme through the night!). I was quickly underwhelmed by their wine selection, which consisted of «merlot or cabernet sauvignon» as explained by upbeat bartender. I opted for a cabernet and my partner the merlot. I was actually a bit surprised to realize that while looking upon other diners that wine was a popular selection here, despite the limited assortment. They do have as reasonably stocked liquor cabinet as well, if that is more your taste.
The hostess let us know that our table was ready, so we paid out our bar tad and were led to a nice booth in the corner and provided us with menus. The selection is aimed at steakhouse offerings, and the appetizer selection was deliciously homey with offerings like potato skins and coconut shrimp. We opted for the cheese bread with pepper jack (you have the option between American, jack, or pepper jack). For entrees I chose the prime rib cooked medium rare and my partner the ribeye cooked medium.
Each of our steak selections were accompanied with soup or salad: myself opting for salad with bleu cheese and Partner opting for soup of the day (vegetable beef). The salad was nearly literally drowning in dressing, but as I could quite likely drink bleu cheese dressing straight from the bottle is seemed just right for my palate. The soup was hearty with large chunks of vegetables and beef, but I found it highly lacking in any umami flavor that I often enjoy from beef broths.
When our appetizer arrived, I found the bread to be very underwhelming in flavor, and did not even realize that the cheese bread is a helping of Backwoods garlic bread with melted cheese until our server mentioned it. I found the bread lacking in any garlic flavor, but was not lacking in pepper jack (which was a bit on the heavy side compared to the serving of bread, but who am I to complain about too much cheese…).
Our steaks came shortly after, served with a choice of potato (we both selected the Backwoods «own creation» stuffed baked potato). My prime rib was served with traditional au jus and creamed horseradish. We were also interested to learn that Backwoods stocks with A1 sauce as well as HP sauce (not that I would ever dare to put either on a steak).
We both found our stuffed potatoes to be tasty, filled with baked potato mixed with shredded cheese, green onion, and sour cream (?). It was more-​or-​less a loaded baked potato, just pre-​mixed.
The steaks, we both agreed, were not the highlight of the meal, which made us both a bit disappointed. I found my au jus to be lacking in flavor, and while my prime rib was cooked well, I did find it lacking in a certain juiciness that I enjoy from a good prime rib. The steak itself was also under seasoned to my taste. My partner’s ribeye was slightly undercooked (more on the medium-​rare side, not that I’d complain!) but did have a decent marbling on it that we enjoyed. I was slightly confused by the wedge of orange and limp piece of lettuce that was placed on our plates as a garnish, but that was easily enough pushed aside.
We were much too full to order dessert, which I’m really kicking myself for now!
Overall, atmosphere was good, service was attentive and friendly, food was average. It was a fun night out, and we enjoyed how our booth felt both intimate as well as open and relaxing. I would be interested in going back to try their lunch offerings, which are also offered at a lower price point that many dinner offerings.
