Fairfield Inn Detroit West/Canton

Very disappointed that this is even a Marriott property. It is a motel that has been converted but is still a filthy motel. Checked out this morning — not one question about how was your stay. I would have loved to tell them. There was hair on the wall of the shower, light fixture in bathroom is filthy and has severe burn marks, cigarettes all over the sidewalk, some other kind of glass tubes all over the ground on the sidewalks. A real disappointment to say the least. Lady at check in was very pleasant and that is the nicest thing I can say about the place. I took pictures of this to share with them, but guessing they know this already.

The rooms themselves are fine for a night. Nothing special. They were recently renovated but kind of on the cheap. No plug ins on the bedside lamps (in 2015 that’s a must have). There were wires hanging out under the ac unit. The phones weren’t updated and the channel lineup by the TV was sticky. It didn’t seem like any of the outlet receptacles were replaced and several didn’t hold a plug snugly. One didn’t work at all.
The bed and bath were both clean. The bottom 2 floors’ rooms open directly outside so I requested the top floor for security purposes since I was traveling alone with a toddler. It’s not a horrible area of town but this building just felt seedy. There isn’t even a covered area for cars to park while checking in.
The front desk staff is top-​notch considering what they have to work with. Very accommodating and friendly. I noticed the one clerk was talking on a reception phone that was scotch taped to a shoulder rest.
All in all, fine for a night but not someplace I would recommend for an extended (more than 2-​night) stay.

This is the worst Marriott branded property I’ve ever experienced.
To start, the young lady at reception was more interested in talking to the two guys hanging out with her than helping get me checked in. No mention of breakfast, pool or any amenity.
All rooms have an exterior entry. Room was on the second floor and you had to use the room card to activate the elevator. The lamp shade was heavily stained and torn next to the bed. Electrical conduit and a junction box were on the floor next to the air condition unit. Not under it, next to it, still connected. The spread on the bed was dirty/​stained. Debris under the sink and tiles broken in the bathroom. The shower knob was stuck in the up/​shower position so I enjoyed the cold blast.
The curtains would not close so I had to use clothes hangers and clip them shut.
Inadequate parking as cars were on the side of the road and half in the drive way. Difficult to maneuver.
Room was loud with traffic, road construction and foot traffic outside the door.
I’ll not stay here again and would suggest the extra 10 minutes in either direction will get you a better hotel.

I have read the other reviews and am stunned that people are not more understanding of the renovations that the hotel is trying to make. My family and I stayed here for over two weeks and found the staff to be hard working and kind. Basil and Will went above and beyond to make sure that guests were happy and comfortable. Breakfast was good, rooms were clean and cozy, and the price was right!

Intruder entered room at 4am while we were sleeping. My husband charged toward him, causing him to turn and flee. We left as soon as possible after reporting the event. The hotel is not of the same quality as other Fairfield Inns at which we have stayed.

So, the primary reason I am giving this four stars is purely because of the customer serivce. Actually, the customer service gets a 5 and the hotel itself gets a 2.5 which is why it works out to be about a 4ish?
Staying here for business for a few days and it has a «motel» feel which is to be expected for the area and the price?-No biggie since I’m not spending much time in the room. If you are looking for a marriott type place with nice fluffy bedding super clean amenities than its not for you. Also, the only thing I want to warn people about the «fitness center» is that it is basically a motel room with two old run down treadmills.
However, point being-​the service is excellent-​specifically Mike at the front desk-​he deserves a raise so pleasant the whole time! The shuttle driver even offered to drive us to our dinner reservations!

Have stayed here on my last 2 visits into town over the last 3 years.
First stay was much better than this one.
Carpet and baseboards were very dirty, bathroom had zero towels (had to call for towels) and there was no fan in the bathroom… this is a problem when you are in a small room with a connected bathroom small enough to where it doesn’t even fit a sink in the actual restroom area. Water was cold every morning. Next visit we will pay more and stay somewhere more comfortable and clean.

Booked multiple rooms for a last-​minute business trip that ended up being canceled the next day. I canceled the reservation but was charged for them due to error by Marriott. However, my review of this hotel is not for the condition of the hotel, but the debacle and unbelievably rude conduct of their General Manager Izak Yaldo.
To keep it brief, I will NEVER stay at this Fairfield or recommend it to coworkers requiring accommodations in the area. (I had canceled our Fairfield reservations because I found the amount of rooms I actually needed at the Embassy Suites. When I canceled our reservations with the General Manager of Embassy Suites, he exceeded my customer service expectations and assured me he would take care of any cancelation procedures). Based upon the difference in customer service, I have already notified our local office to warn them about the terrible management at this Fairfield Inn and to advise people to stay elsewhere.
After over 8 hours of arguments and emails between my credit card fraud department, Marriott Customer Service, and Izak Yaldo, it took Marriott over a month to realize the error was their «internal error» and to correct it (even though they admitted their error, I had to call them AGAIN when they failed to fully correct the problem). From the first conversation I had with Mr. Yaldo, he refused to listen to my problem and lied about his attempts to contact me when we were «no shows». He stated he called me «at least 7 or 8 times» and left «2 – 3 messages». However, my cell phone log shows 2 phone calls over 2 days and 0 messages. Hmm…
When the Marriott Customer Service representative spoke with Mr. Yaldo, I could tell that she was frustrated with his attitude and she assured me things would be explained to Mr. Yaldo since he didn’t understand that the problem was not my fault, but was a Marriott problem. After speaking with a Customer Service Manager, he stated that Mr. Yaldo is a new General Manager and didn’t understand how this problem could occur. He apologized on behalf of Mr. Yaldo and on the behalf of Marriott. I’m sorry, but based upon the hostility of Mr. Yaldo and the way he treated me, the least he could have done was to apologize personally.
As a result of such a negative experience with Mr. Yaldo, I will not be staying at Marriott in the near future. This Silver Member is taking her business back to Hilton.

No, it’s not super luxury, but this hotel is clean, comfortable and the staff is extremely accommodating and friendly. They even have a free shuttle to and from Detroit airport and free breakfast.
I wouldn’t recommend this hotel for a long term stay, but if your flight is canceled and you need a spot to crash overnight, this hotel is more than good enough for that.

I never seem to learn! I should ALWAYS check Unilocal first! So since it is the Art Fair and Restaurant Week period in Ann Arbor and hotel rates are jacked up 30% I sought more reasonable rates 20 – 25 miles away. Last week worked out GREAT — at the DTW Airport Fairfield I was given an upgrade (really nice suite) and everything was fresh and new. Thought I’d try a different location this week and am paying the price. A really rundown cheap place, smelly old carpets everywhere and in desperate need of an upgrade. Front desk clerk was friendly (hence the 2 stars) and they offer free nasty pizza M-​W (no thanks). Lesson learned.

You get what you pay for.
So for about $ 65 a night at the Fairfield Inn you will get:
— A run down property in dire need of renovation.
— Friendly staff with cookies at the front desk.
— A smallish room with microwave, fridge, tv, iron and stained chair.
— Paper thin walls where you are woken up by the alarm clock next door.
— A/​C, Wifi, and decent water pressure.
— Access to the outdoor pool.
— Complimentary breakfast.
— Walking distance to the Canton IKEA!
Next time, I will likely pay more and stay elsewhere.

Great Value for the price. Location is great, right off of the highway and near major venues. There was a shuttle service if needed. The rooms were clean and well kept, and the staff was super friendly! Continental breakfast was great in the morning and the cookies at the front desk at night are definitely a plus! Can’t beat it!

Bad motel. The room smelled moldy. The sink didn’t work. Not up to Marriott standards at all.

Would never stay back here again. This is the worst Marriot that I have ever stayed at. Marriott should be ashamed. First thing I did when I got there was kill a bug in the sink. The bathroom was not that clean and the whole room needed an update. The carpet was disgusting. This was probably an old Motel that Marriott bought. Not cool, J. W… I thought your standards were higher than this.

Worse Marriott property I’ve ever stayed at. This is an older motel that has been converted to a Marriott property. The lobby area smelled bad (not clean). I was given a room on the main floor, outdoor main access. The room smelled like mildew when I walked in, and it just looked dirty and «felt» dirty. The desk lamp would not turn on, and the lamp next to the bed worked, but the switch was ready to break. I ended up staying only because I was so exhausted. However the deficiencies did not go unnoticed, including no hot water for my shower the next morning. I will not be returning.

On a overnight trip to a colleague’s surprise retirement party in the Detroit/​Canton area this past weekend, we all got rooms at the Fairfield Inn in Canton. Very convenient from I-​275, it’s easy to get to and is close to most local places, including the local IKEA just next door.
It appears it was renovated from an old motel type of inn, as the remnants of the outside doors are still present on some of the rooms. However, access to rooms are all from an indoor hallway now, no outside doors. The lobby is nice sized, surprising, with big flat screen TV and sofas to relax in. There is one computer and printer accessible to guests in the lobby. There is a breakfast area used in the morning where they provide a continental breakfast to guests daily. The breakfast is ok, nothing like eggs or anything like that available but bagels, pre-​fab French toast, cereals, yogurt, waffle iron, and juices/​milk/​coffee available. It can get you started ok.
The hotel shuttle was very good, picking us up at Detroit Metropolitan and getting us to the hotel or other venues near if needed. There was a charge per person for where we wanted to go at night but it was about 3 and half miles away in Plymouth, and later at night, so not totally unforseen. Quick transport and nice drivers.
The rooms themselves are ok, modest but certainly useable. Each have a mini fridge and microwave. The sink is in the main room area, small but ok. The bathroom area with the toilet and shower however was extremely small (I stress extremely), no room much at all unless you keep the door shut, and then it’s standing room only. The bed itself was comfortable and suitable. There is a bar for hanging clothes (no separate closed off closet) and holder for a suitcase. Also there is a work desk provided, and flat screen TV opposite the bed. Adequate for a night’s stay, not posh but not roach motel.
Bottom line: I was ok with my stay here, and at the group rate arranged. If I had to pay full price, I may have looked elsewhere. No service horror stories to report, nothing outstanding to report one way or the other. As I said before, it was adequate for a night’s stay.

Note: I haven’t actually stayed here. This review is based solely on their customer service. I booked a trip to stay at this hotel for a weekend. Something came up and I ended up having to cancel the reservation. I am willing to eat the one night plus tax penalty for canceling last minute, but when speaking to the hotel, they said we would receive no refund. At all. Their cancelation policy is one night plus tax. Apparently there is no manager that works there because we called several times to speak with one. Eric the Manager, if you exist, please call me back!
