We strive to make every patient feel they are part of our vision care family. Our frame selection includes many popular fashion designers such as Salvatore Ferragamo, Calvin Klein, Bebe, Nine West, Nike, Tommy Hilfiger, Juicy Couture, Guess, Nautica, Lulu Guinness, Ted Baker, Switch Sunglasses, Maui Jim, plus many more. Contact lens services include Corneal Refractive Therapy, Custom Rigid Gas Permeable lenses, Multifocal, and Astigmatism fitting. Laser refractive and cataract surgery co-​management to provide a team approach to your surgery treatment. Every eye examination includes a screening for glaucoma and the Optomap Retinal Examination offers the opportunity to examine your retina without using dilating drops.

History

Established in 1990.

After opening the practice in 1990 in Westgate Shopping Center, our office has worked hard to maintain a close relationship with our patients so we can provide the best possible personalized eyecare. In 1995 we moved to 290 West Hamilton Avenue in Campbell, approximately 1.5 miles from Westgate with the same hours and phone number. Consequently we have many patients who have been coming to us for nearly twenty years. Technology has played a large role in the development of optometry as a health profession and we are constantly searching for new ways to provide better diagnostic capabilities for our patients. If you are looking for the latest fashions in eyewear we’re adding a new designer lines to our selection every year and we love to hear suggestions from our patients about designers they would like us to add.

Dr. Umeda was born in San Jose, California, graduated from Lincoln High School, the University of California, Santa Cruz (Biology), and the Illinois College of Optometry. Starting in high school on the track team he has been a runner and has participated in numerous running events both locally and around the world. Dr. Umeda is a member of the Lincoln High School Foundation. The LHS Foundation raises funds for the benefit of all of the current Lincoln High student body.

I got contact lenses and glasses from Dr. Umeda’s office and it was a very pleasant experience. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Dr. Umeda is very good but they staff is the main reason I wanted to write a review.
I am always nervous on the phone. A lot of the times when I call doctor’s offices, receptionists make me feel like I am a nuisance, not at Dr. Umeda’s office.
I got an appointment for the following week and waited a very short time at the office before my appointment which are important factors for a busy mom.
The examination was very thorough, Dr. Umeda tried 3 different contact lenses to find the one that suited me the best and he let me try them out for a few days before making my final decision.
I initially didn’t pay extra for anti-​glare on my glasses but that was a big mistake. I called them to ask if there was anything we can do and they said they can send them back to the lab and fix it.
Oh also, the staff helped me pick glasses. Thanks to them I used my insurance efficiently and didn’t pay anything for the glasses!

This was the first time I have been to the eye doctor and I was a bit nervous. The idea of needing glasses takes enough getting used to but facing this with a doctor makes it worse. Dr. Umeda and his staff made the experience painless and made me feel good about needing glasses.
The exam was quick but very thorough. They used a bunch of different exam methods but Dr. Umeda still took time to make sure that the prescription was right. A large waiting room with a wide selection of frames to choose from. Once ordered, my glasses arrived to their office almost a week early.
The overall experience was fantastic and made getting glasses so much easier to digest. Highly recommend them to anyone looking for a great eye doctor.

Today was my first day going to the eye dr in years! I was a bit nervous, but the assistant was so nice I was at ease. Between her and Dr. Umeda they were so knowledgable and laid back it was comforting. Dr. Umeda was so nice and gave me all the information I needed leaving me with as little questions as possible. I never I thought I would say this because I am excited to go to my next appointment!

I’ve been a patient of Dr. Umeda’s for several years and must say, Sharon is such a sweetheart. She and the other staff (Elaine and Coleen) are the reason I keep coming back to this office. I’ve been coming to Dr. Umeda for many years. Probably not as regularly as I should, but that’s mostly because I refuse to admit I’m getting old and need new glasses. It’s certainly not his fault that I’m pig-​headed.
As everyone else says, his staff is very friendly and very professional. His exams are REALLY thorough and you really feel like he’s really taking his time to make sure you understand everything he’s doing and seeing regarding your eyes and vision. They get bonus points for no longer doing those awful drops to dilate your pupils that make it impossible to work the rest of the day. :)

I just had my annual eye exam from Dr. Umeda and was so happy that my vision has actually improved a bit. Last year, Dr. Umeda gave me a monovision lense fitting since I have reached the stage of needing bifocals. Now, it seems my eyesight isn’t deteriorating as much and I don’t have to wear readers!
You always feel as though you are getting a very thorough and professional eye exam here. They have the latest technology to evaluate the retina which can detect many diseases. Seems like a very good idea, especially as you get older.
The staff here is also very helpful in figuring out how to use your insurance benefits most effectively. If you wear contacts and glasses, this is a plus since it can be very confusing. Plus they are very good about having you try sample contacts until you find ones that are comfortable for you.
Other family members also see Dr. Umeda regularly. Highly recommended if you are looking for quality eyecare.

Dr. Umeda is AWESOME! My husband and I agree on that! I can see with new contacts that help me with my reading and I don’t depend on reading glasses anymore (still need them for tiny type). Looking forward to my new glasses prescription. Dr. Umeda’s staff is very welcoming and knowledgable.

I hate getting my pupils dilated. You basically give up half the day while your eyes say «WTF?!» and calm the hell down.
Not at Dr Umeda’s office! They’ve leased this thing that you look into. It has the red ring of death, but it is not going to kill you. Basicaly, it flashes a bright green light, with which it then takes a picture of your eye. Much better than dilation! In fact, they will even email you the files, and you can post it to Facebook or whatever the hell it is you want to do with them. In addition, they can do it next time and compare to see if you’re any closer to the dreaded glaucoma.
The décor has some neat Buster Posey and Tim Lincecum paraphernalia, so if you are a Giants fan, support your kind.

I’ve seen Dr. Umeda a couple of times now and I like his office and his waitstaff. Though he didn’t offer any opinion on my eye mucus problem which I was kind of hoping he would, as Kaiser has told me I have drooping eyelid syndrome which means my eyelid does’t close right always and my eye dries out, he did tell me about a wonderful eyelid cleanser that has helped the problem. He’s a bit uptight as the other reviewers say, but I found that he does have a friendly and fun side when I teased him about liking high-​tech gadgets as we explored my retinal examination that had been done with a new toy — er machine they have in the office that photos your entire retina and doesn’t require eyedrops. He laughed a few times at that but didn’t say he does’t like his toys :). I find him helpful and friendly and I like that he’s not too friendly which would be creepy. He keeps an appropriate level of professionalism and courtesy just as he should. He’s a fantastic eye-​doctor and he is really helpful in finding the right prescriptions, even with difficult patients like myself who have acute nearsightedness AND a fluctuating prescription due to astigmatism.

I have been going to see Dr. Ray for about 5 years and think that he provides great service.
His office is very large and always clean. He also always seems to have the most update tools and equipment. When you go see him, you get his full attention. Not like at some of those big Lenscrafters types of places where techs seem to do most of the work, Dr. Ray does all the work himself.

Dr. Umeda is great. He’s very uptight about my vision and I mean that in the best possible way. I want the man in charge of my eyeballs to be on the careful side. He’s also very professional, and runs a nice office.
I made a mistake and took my eyeballs to a clinic closer to home. Big error. It turns out that other optometrists aren’t cut from the Dr. Umeda mold. I highly recommend him.

Dr. Umeda must be a capricorn… or else he’s from a place where «workaholic» isn’t a bad thing (think mid-​western states).
I agree with the FTR, he’s not warm and fuzzy, but he knows his shtuff. I came to Dr. Umeda to try contacts again. he was very patient with me as i tried some three trial lenses, took a pair home for a week, and made my decision.
because i have an astigmatism that is normally reserved for aliens from another dimension, my contacts must always be special ordered. he was very kind and imparted all of his knowledge of astigmatisms upon me…
oh, and when my contacts tore a week before my prescription was due to arrive, he was kind enough to pass out a pair of the newest fancy trial-​wears. (again, trial wear lenses SPECIAL ordered. from the alien eye factory).
can i give more than five stars for the fabulous office hours he has… 9 — 8 almost every weekday and even saturday hours!

Well, my vision isn’t 20⁄20 and thanks to Dr. U., I now have reading glasses! Dr. Umeda’s staff is friendly. You don’t wait too long to see him and he has a fairly big selection of frames to choose from. Also, if you don’t see exactly what you want, they’ll order it for you.
So why only four stars? Well, Dr. Umeda isn’t exactly warm and fuzzy. Brisk and efficient is more like it. Go see him if you want no nonsense service with minimal wait time.
