History

Established in 1930.

National Gown Cleaners has been providing cleaning, preservation and restoration services to textile conservators since 1930. In 1978, the company started offering its services and archival products to the public. A normal dry cleaner cleans everyday clothing. We only clean bridal, christening, communion and social gowns. We employ textiles conservators. National Gown Cleaners uses solvents and wet-​cleaning methods developed for cleaning fragile textiles and gowns with beads, sequins and glued-​on ornamentation, which cannot be safely cleaned in perchloroethylene (a common solvent used by dry cleaners). The company uses state-​of-​the-​art technology and equipment including custom made devices only used by National Gown Cleaners. The company laboratory uses conservation equipment found in the best museums in the world.

I had a little too much fun at my friends wedding as a bridesmaid and ended my night with some stains on my bridesmaid dress. Not good. The dress was made of tulle and polyester so cleaning it myself was not worth the risk. I also did not want to risk taking it to a dry cleaner so luckily I found National Gown Cleaners! They clean more than just wedding gowns!
It was easy to set up a consultation online, and it was nice to know I could do that rather than give them my dress and be faced with a high price tag later. Christine was friendly the entire appointment and her professionalism really stuck out to me. She explained the whole process step by step, leaving no confusion what so ever. She stayed professional while I handed her my gross dress which I appreciated. She told me the cleaning would take a month due to back up, but it ended up taking two weeks!
When I got my dress back, all was clean, no tulle was damaged, and they even fixed a belt loop that had come apart. Everything was appointment based but, it was easy to manage! Hopefully I won’t dirty any nice dresses again but if I do, I’ll surely come here!!!

I wish I had taken my gown here to begin with. They are so professional and knowledgeable. After another cleaner ruined my dress by improperly cleaning it, I brought my dress to Christine to see if it could be fixed. She knew exactly what they had done wrong and clearly explained everything. They pressed my dress and it was drastically improved, but since they were not able to completely fix it I was not charged for the service. Their perfect customer service was truly appreciated after a horrific experience with other local cleaners. Take your dress here. You will not be disappointed.

For all brides out there, take your wedding dress here and not to your local cleaners! Christine is so knowledgeable and will make recommendations that are in your best interest.
My local cleaners couldn’t remove the red wine stain on my wedding dress and I left it as such for over 15 months. I recently took my dress to Christine to see if the stain could be removed. She explained to me that it could be done but it wasn’t guaranteed and that I would be better off finding the fabric to replace two small panels from my dress through a seamstress. She said that both options would wind up costing me about the same. She even made recommendations for the fabric store and seamstress and told me to bring the dress back once I had it fixed. My dress would then go through cleaning so that the new fabric would go through the same cleaning process as the old material in order for them to age together in terms of color/​appearance. She also explained to me that the current way that part of my dress was pressed, I would end up with fabric disintegration/​breakage down the line, to which I had no idea! Also, do not put your dress in a plastic container because that will oxidize your dress more quickly! I am such a newbie at these things, but thank goodness Christine is there to save the day!
When we were chatting, Christine mentioned that she also did subcontracting to help brides repair dresses by finding new fabric and having a seamstress resew the gowns. I didn’t put two and two together that Christine would be able to do the same for my dress until I had driven off. Not wanting to go through the hassle of having to do everything myself, I drove back and asked Christine if she could find the fabric for my dress, bring it to the seamstress, and clean/​box my dress for me. She happily agreed and I was so relieved and excited!
Once I get my dress back, I will post an updated review. I understand I won’t get it back for a while given the process but I don’t mind at all, especially if it means getting my dress back in the best possible condition :)

These people are the best in the industry. Of course you’re going to pay more than your average dry clear: they’re experts in special fabric cleaning and preservation. And quit bitching about correspondence — they have an efficient online booking system (ugghh…entitled brides!). I got my consignment wedding dress cleaned and steamed there — very happy. They even helped me fix some alteration issues, for free :) Thanks!

Christine very professional and prompt to rtn ph calls and emails. Recommended by my seamstress. Bought dress at a sample sale, there was what i thought black stains on the ends of thr hems, but christine said it was dust and it would be removed easily!

Wedding gown cleaning and preservation is serious business. At least it is to National Gown Cleaners!
They did a a great job cleaning my dress. It came out spotless and looking completely new. They even removed the bust pads and tulle inside the dress so that it would not cause decay inside the preservation box. Christine is an expert on how to keep your dress in perfect condition and she gave me very specific instructions on what to do going forward.
My dress cleaning took 8 months instead of the 6 months that they had estimated, but that didn’t bother me. I also didn’t have any trouble reaching them through email for status updates on my dress.
A bit on the pricey side (I think my cleaning and preservation was almost $ 250), but then again, everything wedding-​related is expensive!

Curtain rises:
Me, 3 weeks before my wedding. Dirty wedding dress (bought as a sample). Mild panic. Search Unilocal reviews for SF dry cleaners. Businesses with glowing reviews have dismal ones, too! Mild panic. Broadened search area to peninsula. National Gown Cleaners has great reviews. But Unilocal naysayers complain that 1) they take forever to clean gowns; and 2) employees are difficult to contact. I almost don’t email because I need the dress cleaned fast. I email anyway. Liz writes me back in an hour. She requests that I send photos of my dress to assess whether it can be cleaned quickly. I send photos the same day. Christine replies (also same day): it can be done! My dress and I are in Campbell two days later. Christine makes my dress a priority. I get it back in less than a week. It is clean. And they attached straps to protect the delicate lace. Christine told me the best way to transport my gown and hang it pre-​wedding. There was no rush fee. I paid less than half the price quoted in other Unilocal reviews. Definitely as good as it gets.

I am so lucky that I found them. I bought a sample dress for my wedding and it had quite a bit of stain on it. To work with them, you have to be flexible with their schedules as they are only open on certain days of the week. But when I talked with Christine during our appt, I was convinced that this was the right place to have my dress cleaned. She is professional and very honest. And the price is the same as any other cleaners, but they clean each garment separately until it is as clean as it can be. My dress looked brand new when it was done!
I will be taking my dress back to have it preserved with them as well! Highly recommend especially to brides that have bought sample dresses!

I was married 12 years ago and never took my dress in for preservation. Yes, I am one of many woman who put there dress in a storage container and say, «I’ll get to it later»…finally after 12 years, I took my wedding dress out of the storage container to have cleaned and preserved by National Gown Cleaners & Archival Products.
Today, I picked up my dress and it looks like it has never been worn. The service you get when you meet with the owner, Christine Morrisey or her team is impeccable. They take care of your as if you are family!

I borrowed a gown from a friend for an event. The gown had stains and make up on it and said professional spot clean only… I was very hesitant to taking the gown to the local dry cleaners so I went on the Unilocal and found National Gown Cleaners! Thank you baby Jesus! …
Christine answered all my questions, she was very nice and professional. Even though I didn’t have a wedding dress, it was more of an evening– prom gown, she still treated me like a value customer. The price was reasonable (college student!) and they were very attentive with e-​mails. I just picked up the gown today. and it looked 100x better.

After all the effort and anxiety in getting my elaborate wedding dress, of course I wanted it preserved properly. Fortunately, getting my dressed preserved by National Gown Cleaners was completely anxiety free. Chris was very friendly and easy to work with. She explained the process patiently and in detail. When my dress was finally returned to me, the grease on my hem from walking around the parking lot was gone, and the dress seemed to sparkle even more than when I wore it for my wedding! Chris at National Gown Cleaners couldn’t have been more pleasant to work with. Emailed about an appointment and received a prompt response (even though it was in the evening!) At my appointment she really took the time to explain to me how my dress would be cleaned and preserved. Their professionalism and attention to detail is beyond compare. They ask so many questions about your event to really understand the types of stains they may be up against. This is not just some dry cleaner — They specialize in dress cleaning and take pride in their work. I’m telling all my friends to take their dresses here!

I bought a sample dress for my April wedding next year and need to get it cleaned. My train was pretty dirty from being dragged around and the body also had some stains here and there. I didn’t want to bring it to a regular dry cleaners since this wasn’t a cleaning after a wedding where I just wanted it clean to preserve it.
I had found National Gown Cleaners on Unilocal and also had read a few reviews on a few other websites. My alterations person also told me about this place since a few of her brides had used this place as well.
Christine was very knowledgeable about the fabric of my gown, silk taffeta, which apparently is one of the harder fabrics to handle and clean. She got most of the stains off my gown with on a few different cleans (she says they ran my dress through multiple times using different solutions). My dress of course doesn’t look perfectly new but pretty clean enough and I love how it turned out.
One negative I have about the place is that I had to call and email a few times to find out the status of my gown, although they had told me they’d contact me once it goes through the cleaner once. But after I had told her I wanted to the dress by a certain date, she came through and got it pressed and scheduled for pick-​up.
The price is a little pricier than most cleaners I think and definitely more expensive than some of the online cleaners where you send your gown to be preserved. But since I needed it clean to wear it, I believe it was worth every penny.

It was so difficult to get a hold of the owner/​sales rep that I finally gave up.
I read the other reviews and it ‘s obvious that she does a good, thorough and professional job. I really wanted to give her business.
It was frustrating trying to nail down an appointment time with her. She’d always reply by e-​mail the morning of the available appointment slot, and that’s if she replied at all. But I never knew if she got my acknowledgement reply in time. Then the next time I heard from her, it was the following Monday/​Wednesday/​Friday/​one-​week-​later/​whatever. I sent e-​mails, I left voicemail messages. Finally I said to just let me know the next time she has a slot on such-​and-​such time on such-​and-​such days, and I would just show up with the gown. I’m 5 minutes away from her office and I was willing to show up at a moment’s notice. I had my e-​mail up all day for days waiting for her reply.
I never heard from her.
Seriously, I’m really glad to hear that she does a professional job. I really wanted to take my gown to a good place that I could trust. I was ready to meet her pricey bill. But gee whiz, she needs to get her act together.
I took my gown somewhere else.

I would have to agree with one of the previous reviewers. Christine is the owner and the main person that runs the shop. She is only available in Campbell 3 days a week: Mon-​Wed-​Fri. On Tues and Thurs, she is doing business in Los Angeles. Christine is almost always available via email, but very difficult by telephone. As you can see, she is a very BUSY person. Because of her work situation, you don’t get the best customer service. I was merely treated as a «number» with her. She did not remember my name at first, and she always referred to my job number.
They are a bit pricey, but if you do the full cleaning package (clean, press, box), you end up saving some money in the long run. You can also opt to just have your dress cleaned by itself (no boxing). In the end, my dress came out looking BRAND NEW. They did a wonderful job cleaning and pressing my dress!
I later brought my dress back to Christine for a re-​clean (because I wore it again). She graciously offered to clean my dress a second time as a courtesy; they normally charge for this service (for a discounted rate). I was very grateful. I can’t wait to see how the final cleaning/​pressing/​boxing will turn out!
Minus one star because the location is very hard to find; it is located in an industrial setting. In addition, they simply aren’t available during regular work hours.

Had my wedding gown cleaned with them, and they did a great job. They pay excellent attention to detail, photographed the dress before cleaning to document all the problem spots, and any areas where beading might be coming off.
I worked with Chris. I’m not actually sure if there are any other people who work there or it’s just her. She was caring when I could actually get a hold of her, but she was terrible about returning calls or emails. It would take weeks to get a request answered although she is passionate about her work, and will give you a lot of information on the best way to take care of your gown.
The price is very expensive, but you will have a professionals who know what they are doing, and care about your dress.
3 stars because it was so very difficult to do any follow up, the open hours are every other day, they don’t return calls, the price is pretty expensive, and the process can take many months to get your gown cleaned with no good target date on when your dress will be ready. You just have to wait for them to call you.

Very high quality cleaners. I got my wedding dress cleaned and preserved at National Gown Cleaners. I have a $ 6000 dress and they were able to take out the sugar stains, the dirt on the train and preserve it so that my daughter will be able to wear IF she gets married in the future. They clean with a very low chemical cleaner with low heat which is the preferred method for silk gowns. I paid ~$ 300 for the cleaning but it is worth it for high quality work. I highly recommend!
