Established in 1988.

I have been in the asbestos & lead business 24 years. I started out doing inspections and abatement. But over the coarse of the years, rules and regulations, it became a conflict of interest to do both, so I chose the abatement end of the business. Through the years the business has grown into other areas such as Lead abatement, Mold remediation and Soft interior demolition.

After serving in the Marines as an infantryman John Howell moved to California and started working in the construction trade 34-​Years ago. After 10-​yars of experience, he started his own construction company with a partner. Presently, he is the sole owner of J.W.H. Asbestos Removal Service.

John maintains his asbestos abatement license, construction license, lead, mold and OSHA certifications all in good standing.

John has managed all aspects of a construction company and has many years of experience in abatement. He is well respected in the local community among his peers and is called on when his specialization and shills are needed.

Great job! Showed up on time and professional. They covered my carpet and were respectful about my stuff, removed all asbestos and left me a clean basement :) 4 reviews because they didn’t remove all old pipes but other then that I would recommend.

John arranged for his team to come out to remove my 9×9 vinyl 10% asbestos tiles in just two weeks after reaching out. The quote was clear and he even took a loose asbestos covered drain pipe under my house for no extra charge. The price quoted was the price I paid and that is sometimes rare. A contractor will provide an estimate and it seems to always be above that in the end — not with John. They turned up 15 minutes before they said they would — this is a stickler for me, as turning up early for a job is a plus. Three guys went at it — and I mean at it… in 4 hours they sealed the room off, set-​up their hepa filter thingy and went at tearing up my sub-​floor. After the job was done, they thoroughly cleaned the site — it was like the problem was there one moment and then gone the next. I knew I had to lay a new plywood sub-​floor after they completed this task and I was wondering if would need to hammer nails in or remove left-​over glue. Not with this team, all I have to do is buy plywood sheets and screw them down ready for a new hardwood floor. Highly recommended.

JWH was very helpful as we had a mold issue in our soon-​to-​be baby girl’s room. It was causing me a lot of stress, and while we tried to get the job taken care of by other companies, time ticked by and then – what do you know – I went into labor. So, I called JWH and asked for a quote, and they responded quickly, but were double-​booked through the next week. When Grace heard about our situation and the concern that we had a newborn, she arranged for two people to resolve the mold issue in the room just two days later – on a Saturday! Awesome folks, and I would work with them again in a heartbeat.

The kitchen and a bedroom had some very old floors that tested positive for Asbestos. John was knowledgeable and obviously knew what the floors were, and why they tested positive. It was re-​assuring that he and his crew have the experience to know what they are dealing with and what they are doing.
They gave an estimate, and charged exactly what they said they would. The job was also completed on time per the projection given.
Before the start date of the job, I also discovered some black mold that needed to be removed on some of the walls (which also tested positive for asbestos, so I couldn’t do it myself). JWH also does mold removal, and was able to remove the damaged drywall as well. A separate estimate range was given for the drywall removal, and John met that estimate as well. The mold/​drywall work was also finished on time to the projected finish date.
When they left, they swept up all the work areas and left the house clean. If you have a problem with Asbestos or Mold, this is the company to call. They are a family business, care about their work, and take the time to help with their customers questions. Asbestos and mold are potentially harmful and these guys take the fear out of dealing with it by making sure the job is done right.
I understand they also do lead removal. I did not need that, but if ever do I am calling JWH.

JWH Asbestos was recommended to me by my general contractor while he was remodeling our house and encountered asbestos in our attic. The crew from JWH Asbestos was on site within a couple days and did a meticulous job of sealing off the house, removing every trace of asbestos and our old ductwork, and leaving the house free of any debris… all within a few hours. They did my house 3 years ago. These guys are really professionals. John inspected my popcorn ceiling and gave a very reasonable quote. Better than other competitors. When they removed the asbestos, they cleaned up very well. I will not hesitate to use them again. Great service and communication.

I had JWH remove the VCT tiles and mastic in my Eichler as he came recommended by my GC. They told me that it was going to take 2 days but they had to work 3.5 days because they said they had a hard time getting the mastic off. They used 5x as much solvent as usual which made my house smell for 2 months. Contractors did not want to work in my house until the smell was resolved. They did guarantee me that the solvent was not toxic. I appreciated them taking the 2 extra days to get everything more or less off (+1 star). But I was really disappointed to discover that after I paid that they damaged every single paneling wall in my house. They hung plastic on the walls to protect them and while pulling them off the tape took off 2 – 4 inches of paneling on EACH WALL. I understand that it can happen on 1 or 2 walls because after all the paneling is from 1959, but I had a hard time understanding that when that happened the first time that they kept on pulling off big pieces of wall. Additionally, I was dismayed that they did not tell me this when I came to pay.

Pretty sure I win when it came to giving John a challenge! 40 years ago my parents had bought into a «weather coating» applied to the entire exterior (imagine popcorn ceiling texture everywhere – walls, eaves, etc– nightmare!) The coating was not only past its prime, like popcorn ceilings, it contained asbestos. There was no question, it needed to be removed. I made the appt and John was there. He offered a quote within a day or so and we were good to go. Wow! what a job! I was so impressed with how well his crew contained what could have been a tremendous mess. It took a few days longer than anticipated, but that was only because the coating was so darn tough to remove. John and his team went the extra mile. As much as I hated calling when I found a couple places they missed he was so great about making sure it was all removed. Thanks John!

After reading the great review on Unilocal,I contacted John Howell to see if he could remove the asbestos tile my wife and I found in our new house.
John was great to work with. We had a quote in no time, the price was competitive and best of all, he was able to come on just one day’s notice! His team arrived right on time and they were competent, professional and very pleasant to deal with. They had the job done in just five hours! They even helped us out and took care of a section of the house that we hadn’t noticed before. John did it at no additional cost.

I had John Howell of ARS remove the popcorn ceilings from all the rooms in my house.
John was very professional and easy to talk with over the phone. They performed the job as promised and provided all the documentation showing the permits and legitimate asbestos disposal.
In the process of getting bids for the job, ARS got a glowing review from an unlikely source: one of their competitors. You see, I asked the competitor why his price was coming in higher and he first mentioned that he ran a union shop and had to pay higher wages than a non-​union shop. Then he asked who was under-​bidding him and I told him it was John Howell. At that point, he started gushing about how well respected John is in the business and how he’s crossed paths a number of times before. He said if John’s able to beat my price, then you can rest assured you are going to get the job done right, without cutting corners. And, if he had to lose business to someone, he was OK to see John get it instead.
