Dy. Nyssen really takes the time to get to know his patients. I hadn’t seen him in three years, and I could tell that he had thoroughly reviewed my file before seeing me! He’s very personable and strives to get to know his patients as PEOPLE, not just as sets of eyes. Always very kind and caring. Highly recommended.

Dr. Nyssen has been my eye doc (and my husbands and my son) for many years, only my recent location out of state made us part. There were 2 occasions I can remember where I had eye emergencies and he provided quick assistance and loving care. He is very professional and knowledgeable about eyes. If you want a calm steady person handling your vision, you will be in great hands. Fortunately, my husband and I had great insurance that covered everything we needed — we never had any administrative or customer service issues. We cannot thank you enough Dr. Nyssen for the service and care you provided our family for the last 15 years!

If I could give less than one star I would!!! Don’t expect this office to make sure your glasses are not defective!!! I received my glasses and the lenses had a problem every 2 months. First three times the excuse was a bad batch of lenses. After they gave me every excuse they decided they would not try to fix them. Well I just think I paid for glasses to not have any problems due bad batches of lenses. You would think something would have been done to make it right. Just sorry, would you like another eye exam and we can help you purchase another set of glasses. Beware. You may get lenses that are defective and they will not care. So hopefully you don’t need your glasses for everyday wear!!! I will be going to Costco for my glasses from this point forward. By the way, Costco does accept VSP.

Dr. Nyssen is excellent. Thorough, very pleasant, a real pro. I still go to him even though I have moved farther away because of the great care he gives.

I was visiting from out of town when I got sudden pain in my right eye. Dr. Nyssen saw me that very day, fitting me during his lunch break. I was glad I went to see him because it turned out to be an eye infection which, left untreated, would have started to destroy my cornea. Since I had a wedding to attend the next day, he fit me into a small slot the next day for a follow up before I had to head out. I can’t thank him enough for making the time to see me; I was a stranger who didn’t live in the area and yet he took care of me greatly. Thank you Dr. Nyssen!

Although I’ve only visited the office twice now, both experiences were fantastic.
Convenient location, flexibility with the schedule, friendly staff, neat and clean office, and Dr. Nyssen himself is just about the friendliest guy you’ve ever met. I saw him ten years ago and he remembered me! He also takes great notes (which, if you work in medicine, you know how impressive that is!).
My insurance covered the exam and although I ended up paying out of pocket a bit, it was only because I trust his judgement regarding the anti-​glare and I opted for the convenience of selecting some adorable Ray-​Ban frames right there in his office, which of course was more expensive. I was also able to use my flexible spending account so that’s like an additional discount right there.
Great experience and I will be recommending him to my colleagues and friends.

I don’t know if Dr. N had a terrible day or what was occurring for him. but I have never been to a location where I felt so ignored and uninformed. I was recommended by a dear friend so I had high hopes that by paying $ 165, I would be thoroughly educated on the procedure options for Lasik, contact lenses and anything regarding the eyes in making a wise decision. My friend gave her word that he would really take care of me. :’(
In my experience of getting my eyes examined. He was incredibly brief with me and had sort of a cookie cutter way of operating. It felt very mechanical to me. a similar feeling of waiting to get my car fixed…
He only provided me with one option (wave front) which is considered the most expensive procedure on the market. I was surprised on his limited option, so I researched and found that there are actually 4 options currently recommend on the market. I didn’t gain any insight or value from this particular appointment.
I was disappointed as well, when I was considering to buy some contact lenses I called into the office to have them fax my over subscription copy. I was then told it would cost another $ 100 for fitting… I remember that there was no mention or offer of getting my contact lenses fitting.
Just a tip. Costco cost $ 80 for both lenses and contact exam.
I would think $ 165 could cover both.
The one great thing he did well was that he called back same day. Usually after 5pm.

There was no wait. Very thorough eye exam. Dr. Nyssen seems very knowledgeable. Did not rush me.

We took our 4yr old son to see Dr. Nyssen. He was thorough and made my son very comfortable and engaged. After the exam, he spent a good bit of time with us (including when he was waiting for my son take a bathroom break) and answered all our questions. Although, my son’s vision is not quite 20/​20, the doctor did not recommend glasses for him.

I have known Jan for about 30 years. I knew him and his wife before he was an eye dDr and he was going to school.
I trust him and the staff, to always come through with excellent and friendly service!
We have moved to Santa Rosa, but we will make the trip to see him when it is time for our appointments next year!

Great staff and the doctor is out of this world thorough and patient. We had an hour and a half blocked off for my eye exam as well as my 2 kids eye exams. He took his time and retested my 4 year olds eyes because it turned out he has amblyopia and needs glasses. We are in good hands and so will you.

The best eye doctor you will ever see. He is so intelligent, interesting, and he has an excellent way of explaining everything you want to know. Even though he is extremely thorough, careful and explanatory, he is still fast. My kids and I all enjoyed our visit, as if we were visiting with a friend who also happened to be our eye doctor. He seems like a wonderful family man, and made both the kids feel extremely comfortable, chatting about their hobbies and such. He carefully diagnosed an issue that I had been concerned about and helped me to understand the details of my diagnosis. We will always go to Dr. Nyssen as long as we live in CA.
The optical department was friendly, careful and helpful and they only sell very high quality frames of the latest styles and have a decent enough selection for anyone. However, they are very expensive. This should be OK if you have VSP, but if you don’t, and you are on a budget, you should look around for the actual glasses. However, as I said, these glasses are very durable, high quality strong metal frames with beautiful accents and up to date styles. Obviously, if you go to a discount eyeglass store, you will find cheap thin metal frames, and old styles. But, it depends on your budget.

Five star for professional service!
I contacted the doctor after reading reviews. Very pleased with the service. The assistant called a week before to verify my insurance and got all the information ready and again at the noon on the day I was supposed to come.
The doctor was friendly and professional. He took a look at my last prescription lens and did a minor modification to my new one after carefully examine my eyes. He also advised me as how to make full use of my plan. The assistant was no pushing at all on getting lens or frames. I pretty much tried all the frames and finally settled on the one that was both good for my eyes and fitting into insurance.

Dr. Nyssen is a great eye dr. with a very helpful staff. They’re very patient and really help with choosing great frames.

First of all, I must say Dr. Nyssen is super awesome and knowledgeable, and 100% I will come back to visit him and get another annual checkup. You can’t go wrong with him. But why three stars?
When I visit an optometrist, I expect two thing:
— Have a through, professional check-​up to get a prescription
— prescription to build a glass
If you need a prescription and you got insurance covered, visit Nyssen and you won’t regret. But if you want a glass, well… you may want to ponder it again.
Here are a few reasons I give three star and a few reason you may want to look somewhere else:
— (Very big NO) The label price on frame is very over-​priced. A frame with no brand (or mediocre brand, i.e. CF) is asking for $ 210, what? Well, I can have a coach sun glass in less $ 210 in any macy store. Even worse, I find exact the same frame online, the msrp is only $ 149.99 and most online/​retail store sell it for $ 100 or less (I’m not talking about ebay here, I’m talking about common price using product search engine). Well, if they double the price on the frame, I don’t expect other service like tinting /​lens are priced reasonably.
— (Not for men) They have very limited choice of frame, in particular, for men. None of my favorite brand is found here. But don’t get me wrong, I’m not nit-​picking on brand, but I just can’t find a «perfect» one here. Their stock for «men» is very limited in my opinion (comparing to ladies). I have been wearing glasses for more than 15 years and have been at least 10 shops, so believe me it’s really limited choice.
— (big head? but still want a stylish frame? No way) I got a big head. Well, not super big but a men-​size head. I have no problem in the past in any other glass store to find a decent one I like and fits my head. But I can only find a barely fit one here. Actually, I only have two or three choice (because of my head). So if you have a big head, I will say you probably want to look somewhere else with more choices.
We buy two glasses and as a total it cost more than $ 1500. I am expecting to pay more but not that much.
— (Probably over-​price very much?) If I have to pay $ 1500 for two glasses (not counting in getting prescription in which co-​pay is only $ 15), I would expect to get at least a nice look, head-​fitting glass. Or at least order some for big-​head men. And I asked whether any discount for getting two glasses… the answer is NO. (And they also told me that sadly, there is no referral bonus).
(At least, you do have a really good doctor to check your eye).
Bottom line, I recommend Dr. Nyssen, and his staffs are all sweat and great. They are courteous, nice, and professional. I have no problem at all to recommend friend and get prescription here. But probably also remind them to consider «two-​stop» shopping, i.e. bring prescription and get glasses somewhere else.
I give it three star for now because of Dr. Nyssen if considering what I paid and what I got. And I will only recommend this place to people who don’t care to pay double price.
BTW, they promised to fine-​tune my frame so it fits better, and I will update the review if they do fix that size issue… (finger crossed)

I’ll keep it short: you’ve found you’re eye doctor. Dr. Nyssen is professional and explained everything in great detail. Great staff, great office.

My father was an ophthalmologist for 35 years. My mother managed the practice of over 20 employees and I used to work summers there, so I know a thing or two about eye doctors, a good medical practice and how doctors should be treating patients.
Dr. Nyssen is, in a word, great. I truly enjoyed every bit of my visit, and expectations were high, given his great Unilocal reviews. So it would have been easy to be let down. Dr. Nyssen has all of the latest gear for testing your eyes and his assistant ran me through those prior to entering the exam room. Dr. Nyssen came to the exam room within a minute or two (so quick I didn’t even have time for a good email inbox check) and very kindly greeted me and introduced himself.
He is clearly very intelligent and well spoken. And after a few decades, he is clearly very good at his craft. He put me at ease. Explained everything he was doing as he did it, and clearly laid out my options after the exam. There was no pressure to purchase glasses or contacts from him, or any other pressure. Only a seemingly real desire for my well-​being. I highly recommend him and suggested my wife move her eye care there as well.

I’ll keep this short and sweet. On Unilocal’s recommendation had my first eye exam in a few years here (I live right down the street, so combined with the Unilocal reviews it seemed like a no brainer).
Dr. Nyssen is great. Super friendly, inquisitive, and very knowledgable. I have a somewhat unusual congenital eye condition and he was all over it.
