Russell House is a New American Tavern that serves seasonally-changing, classic American fare with contemporary influences, carefully-designed cocktails and a resolute selection of wines and local craft beers.
History
Established in 2010.
Russell House is located on the Read Block, a series of four structures (dating from 1780 to 1820) that were later unified behind a single, three-story façade in 1896. At its inception, the Block represented a shift in commercial activity, away from the river and toward the intersection that became known as Harvard Square.
The building that houses Russell House has a long history of occupancy by small commercial enterprises. It’s the fourth component structure on the Read Block (est. 1820), and was originally rented to a small furniture dealer named Thomas Russell, whose family also had a long history of commercial enterprise in the village, having settled there in 1635. Mr. Russell kept his shop, The Thomas Russell Store, until his death in 1857.
Russell House Tavern pays tribute to the original inhabitants of the building, the Russells. We added «House,» because of the feeling of warmth and hospitality that it denotes.
