EcoLogic helps poor, rural communities in Mexico and Central America to become environmental stewards by providing them with the tools they need to better manage their natural resources and improve their living conditions. EcoLogic currently operates in Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Panama.

History

Established in 1993.

EcoLogic was established in 1993 in order to conserve the planet’s diminishing diversity of life in a way that addresses the needs of local people. Given that the world’s poorest people live in some of the most biologically diverse areas, EcoLogic saw a need to help the poor to meet their needs while protecting the habitats of the surrounding landscape. Conventional approaches to conservation at the time did not always take into account the needs of the people living in and around endangered lands. In its efforts to address the underlying social and economic causes of habitat loss, EcoLogic was founded on the belief that local participation is not only socially just, but it is also essential for the effective long-​term conservation of threatened habitats. EcoLogic began by providing small, one-​year grants to local groups, but has since evolved to building longer-​term partnerships, providing technical assistance and multi-​year financial commitments to local community organizations.
