It’s so convenient to have a place like this right in the heart of Harvard Square. As others have mentioned, the staff is super friendly and eager to help. Years ago they spent a while helping me pick out the right type of chicken wire to cover the gaps in my stair rail so that my puppy wouldn’t fall through :)
Even though most of the floor space is dedicated to hardware, I usually come here for the reasonably priced kitchen goods. They have a small but representative selection of pots, pans, bowls, measuring cups, utensils, kettles, and other cooking essentials. I also love the array of cute keychains, hand cream, and other knick knacks by the register.
The prices also are really reasonable, especially for an independent business in Harvard Square. Overall, this is a great and convenient place for housewares or even gifts for the handy cook in your life!

I cannot say enough good things about this place. They always have everything I need and are incredibly innovative and helpful with suggestions. Two of their employees just spent 20 minutes with me fixing the wand (dead batteries plus faulty wiring) for my daughter’s Halloween costume — above and beyond the call of duty and so kind. They never make me feel stupid with my questions and always have good answers!

No review seemed to mention, they take UPS drop-​offs! They’re super friendly too. Other than that, the store seems to have a large collection of every hardware thing you could need. Has a very local/​homey feel, reminded me of the ACE hardware store near Berkeley, CA.

Good old fashioned hardware store where the clerks go out of their way to help. When I thought I had tried everything to attach a garden hose to a bathroom sink faucet, they came to the rescue with an obscure converter that works flawlessly. I wish there were more hardware stores like this.

This is my absolutely most favorite hardware store. There is always someone on hand to cheerfully answer your questions and help you troubleshoot your hardware problems or help you find something. This personal attention and knowledge is wonderful. They make you feel that they enjoy helping you.
They have the usual hardware stuff, including an excellent assortment (a whole aisle) of individual screws, nuts, bolts, fasteners, etc. They also have tools, paint, glues, electrical, plumbing, key cutting, locks, home and garden equipment, etc. In winter, they sell Stabilicers (with tiny cleats) to pull on over your shoes so you can walk on ice.
The prices are reasonable and they will take things back (if unused).
I go out of my way to shop here.

I have been here a number of times over the years. Recently I came by for a few odds and ends. I got great service even though I was asking about a few screws. I learned about a few extra services. For example, they cut some scrap wood to size for me. I got exactly what I wanted all for $ 3.50.

OMG, I wish I still worked in Harvard Square so that I could be there when I need stuff. I have gone to a Home Depot, Waltham True Value looking for a couple of small pulleys with no luck. Dickson’s has never disappointed me when I needed something, and even when I didn’t know I needed something. I just KNOW that they have just the pulley’s I need, too. Now I just have to make the trip. Boy, I miss the Square at times like this, especially Dickson’s.

nesting = tons of trips to the hardware store. and dickson bros is a good one. the guys who work here (I’ve only seen guys) are really nice and helpful — looking out for me, the pregnant lady, by bringing me a basket and offering help — and they have a great selection of items. at first i didn’t realize there was a whole upstairs section– that’s where the organizational items & bathroom items live. your basic hardware store. paint, keys, tools, blah blah. i much prefer it to the other options around like pill in central square. oh, and they even have a student discount!

Considering how small this place is, they have EVERYTHING you need … somehow. I needed some tea «tins» for my tea collection at a reasonable price and they had several styles to choose from. They have a good paint selection. I needed numbers for garbage cans and they have a whole collection with varying sizes. Keys are cut to perfection and never are wrong. Locks for all types of needs. Blah, blah, blah …

Reasonable selection of hardware for a tightly packed space in the middle of Harvard Square. Prices are also reasonable. However, 3 stars goes to the service. Every time I go here, it’s clearly staffed only by barely trained teenagers. Examples of a conversation: «I’m looking for a hacksaw», I say. «What’s a hacksaw?» says the person at the counter.
I also once tried to get a key duplicated. It was slightly bent (cheap metal). The response from the somewhat surly teenager? He can’t duplicate it because he doesn’t know how to unbend the key. Really?
So the bottom line is that you can buy what you need here, but you better know what you need before you go.

Expensive as all day, but you are in the Square… what can you expect. I do like the key making center. They are quick and have some interesting options. They have most of what you need, but not a variety of brand options.
There is not much more to say about it. It is «A-​OK.»

This is the my favorite spot in the square. They have everything. EVERYTHING, i say! I went in to get some keys cut and was perusing their kitchen stuff and found an elusive thermos that I hadn’t been able to track down @ target, walmart, bed bath and beyond, kmart, etc. The folks that work there are über-​nice and really helpful, too.
To top it all off, they now offer a service that allows you to have packages delivered there. Kind of like a po box-​except alot of companies won’t ship to PO boxes. You sign up online, the good folks at dickson bros sign for your package+send you an email to come pick it up, and you grab it at your earliest convenience. I’ve had a couple of boxes snatched off my porch and the places i buy from online wouldn’t ship to a po box, so this is defo a big plus for me.

Three (ish) floors. Lots of helpful staff waiting for your questions (OK maybe a little excessively helpful). Pretty decent selection for a city hardware store; lots of variety, sometimes not exactly what you’re looking for (the potting section is a bit lamentable) but always something you suddenly realize you must buy.
I am happy to pay whatever they’re askin’ (but it’s always reasonable) to keep a place like this in business. Dickson Bros, stomp all over the big box stores!

3:25 pm Karen: Tearing her hair out as the previous tenant did not give her the necessary tools to dismantle the king size bed so that she could move. Makes phone call to Dickson Brothers.
3:26 pm Steven = picks up and walks silly Karen through which hexagonal screwdriver size to use, promises to be around when she stops by.
(one panicked cab ride to Harvard square later)
3:45 pm Steven looks at all of the failed hexagonal screws and tries to find the perfect fit — gives Karen a set to try.
4:05 pm — (Back at the apartment) — Karen finds the perfect fit, dismantles the bed. Bed gets donated!
They are so helpful and so good to you and they really have everything you need. If I had stronger arms I would definitely leave with the whole inventory (especially the kitchenware!)

Holy crap, this place has everything! When I worked at a coffee shop outside of Harvard Square, I used to direct people to this place when they needed spare parts for their coffee makers. Aside from coffee maker spare parts, you can also find frying pans, random kitchen utensils, random camping supplies (or at least things I suspect you can use while camping — I’ve never slept a night outdoors in my life), industrial looking things that I have no idea what their use is, first aid kits, yard games… the list goes on.
And it’s wicked cheap. If it was legal, I’d marry Dickson Brothers.

Love love love.
I don’t know what it is about this but it never fails that they have exactly what I am looking for. Often this item is located immediately at the entrance so I don’t even have to hunt for it.
One sunny day we decided we need to play Frisbee. What do you know, they had a big pile of them by the door. I needed an iron skillet that was just the right size, they had a pile in a variety of sizes.
New pot for a sad plant? Done. Keys cut? Done. Wiffle Ball and bat? Done.
What really wins for me is that within the bustle of Harvard Square there’s still a little small-​town charm to be had. This is a reminder of how stores used to be before Walmart killed them off.
Come in and support a local fixture while finding exactly what it is you’re looking for.
