History

Established in 2010.

Chutneys is a new concept of bringing Indian food into the current trend of fast food chains that cater to a wide range of people looking for cultural food that is adapted to western choices without giving up authenticity.

Chutneys is constantly compared to Chipolte of Indian food as our format of delivery is very like it, Paratha wrap, bowl and Nanini have become the buzz words

I started my carrier as a software engineer but got laid off a day before 9⁄11. 9⁄11 changed the trajectory of my carrier as the market crashed and I had to start fresh somewhere which led me towards fast food and after operating several franchisee locations decided to create a concept near and dear to my heart. Chutneys opened its first location in 2010 and with the patronage of our customers and hard work and honesty we have been very successful.

I wish I could give 0 star to this place. I ordered three chicken momo platter for take out. Something was stinking in my food and I figured out it was one of the chutney. I was very hungry so I ate just the momo without chutney. Next day I called them explaining how they give me old chuntey which was stinking really bad. I went to the store with the other two remaining platter explaining that the chutney was bad and they were trying to tell me that it suppose to stink like that. I am like really a rotten smell? I asked for their manager’s phone number they said they don’t have it and I asked for my money back the girl was trying to tell me that she will get in trouble for that. I told her either u give me ur manager phone number or my money back coz I can’t eat something that smells like rotten. At the end I got my money back but I had to argue with them. I am never going back to this place.

Indian Chipotle sums up Chutney’s perfectly. This location is inside the «Garage» complex in Harvard Square. You start at one end of the assembly line and pick the consumption method (paratha wrap– kind of like a flatwrap/​tortilla, rice bowl, or nanini– a wrap with naan bread), the main type of filling (vegetarian, chicken, or lamb), and then choose your toppings (lettuce, tomato, onion, cilantro, jalapeño, cucumber, or sauces). Within a few minutes your order is ready for you to pay for and consume. The only thing that took a bit longer to prepare are the Momos, which are essentially like giant dumplings.
I got the spinach chicken rice bowl (they even have brown rice as an option!) with cucumber, tomato, jalapeño, and cilantro. It was delicious and came in a nice portion. A friend and I also shared an order of the chicken momo dumplings, which took about 15 minutes to get ready, but they were also very delicious and juicy and could be an entire meal by themselves.
Only thing I was not the biggest fan of were the sauces. To me they were either too sweet, or too bland .just not so interesting in flavors. But I suggest you try them since I was only able to taste three different types of the sauces.
Overall, very cheap, fast, and delicious indian food! Great value and tasty food

For fast food Indian, it’s just ok. I’ve had better fast food Indian, to be honest, but I appreciated the friendly service and the wide selection at Chutney’s. I went for lunch and had a chicken tikka bowl. Rice was ok – kind of hard and dry, and the tikka sauce was sour. I don’t know if it had to do with the toppings or the tikka itself, but it was very very sour and kind of difficult to eat. But it was pretty cheap – about $ 8 for my bowl. I guess it’s an ok option if you are desperate for Indian food and don’t want to pay real money for a better meal.

There’s always this guy who’s there in the evening who I swear is drugged up all the time. His words are generally incomprehensible, eyes are usually red, and movements are clumsy. Honestly he makes me a little uncomfortable, but I tend to just smile and nod.
I love the idea of fast food Indian so I used to frequently come to this spot, but honestly I’ve become disillusioned and now I see Chutney’s for what it is. The flavors aren’t really good, they don’t use a lot of real spices. Sometimes the food is cold as well. The more I come, the more bland it tastes. My boyfriend and I used to have a tradition coming to this place, but I think it’s lost its luster. I unfortunately bought a Groupon deal (only $ 1 off, and it needs to be five separate purchases), so Chutney’s has a hold on me temporarily…

Wow, why didn’t I try this place any sooner!
There’s still more chicken varieties to explore, and the biriyani rice is by no means worth the extra 99 cents (which they advertise in the most sneaky way).
However, where this place scores is the fresh veggies you can also add. Chopped tomatoes, raw, unpickled jalepenos, diced cucumbers, cilantro, squeeze of lime, with their signature chutbeys chicken.
What I like most about this place is the balance. They dont try attacking you with spicy, yet the chutneys chicken manages to still cram a good amount of flavor in other Indian spices. That to me is a signature of good indian food. And if you want it spicy, simply add an available variety of sauces they have.
Will definitely return, and try out the other stuff.

Don’t be fooled! It seems that given the location and the atmosphere you will be eating sub-​par food but that is not the case. This is a great place to grab something when you are on the go, but you will want to sit down for this!
This place serves really good food and fast. Ask for the spiciest if you love spicy food. :)

It was okay I guess.
The main thing this place had going for it was the price. It’s pretty hard to find Indian food under $ 10 let alone in Harvard Square. This place tried to be like Chipotle in that you can pick a base meat and then add other toppings. This sounds good in concept but it wasn’t executed very well. Regardless of what meat you got, they only had one «tikka» sauce that led to everything tasting the same. The tikka sauce was fine but it didn’t really go with the little bit of lamb sauce that was built into the lamb meat option. The toppings were also less like toppings and more like garnish — which isn’t necessarily bad, just wasn’t what I was expecting. Overall the rice-​bowl turned out to be rather odd.
Quick and cheap is definitely nice. But I think I’d rather pay a little more to get something more traditional. Perhaps I’ll come back and try the nanini in the future.

Harvard Square, oh Harvard Square. When I first moved here, I walked around hoping for a place to become my new go-​to. As a student who doesn’t have that much time to go into Boston all that often, I had to close my eyes, walk into a restaurant, and hope for the best.
Someone told me that this was their favorite restaurant so I eagerly came here one day. Decently priced menu? Awesome. Paratha rolls on the menu? Fantastic. My tenure in Cambridge was looking more and more bearable. Until I tried my chicken tikka rice bowl.
Oh dear lord. The chicken was so dry that even drenched in the masala sauce, it still tasted like sandpaper. I couldn’t even taste anything else through the mouthfuls of dry chicken. Not even the spicy sauce redeemed it, and god knows I love spicy sauces. The veggies didn’t taste very fresh and overall, there was no balance in the bowl (unlike a Chipotle bowl for example where everything just ties together).
Why two stars then? It’s cheap and convenient. Now that I’m a student, cheapness and fast service=automatic stars. Also, the mango lassi is decent.

This is an indian subway styled restaurant, I came here with my indian colleagues after a whole day of flight for a late night dinner.
I ordered nanini (nan/​bread-​panini) w/​chicken and rice and yogurt + sweet and sour cream. Turned out to be very good taste!
It tastes like mexican style chicken wrap but w/​indian food hint.
It’s a good place that opens late and serves decent food.

We ordered paneer-​rice, samosas and veggie momos on a Monday afternoon. All three were under-​cooked, lacked good flavor and worst of all was the staff especially the younger lady. Momos were half-​fried, samosas had no salt but worst part was the rice-​paneer where rice was undercooked and after telling them the younger lady just argued and said that she won’t do anything about it. I hope the owner/​manager take notice and do something to fix this place. Please don’t undermine the name of Indian food.

Great food. Tried both chicken roll and biriyani rice + lamb. Not too much of spices, but almost there. I like different sauces too. Staff at the counter was very tired, he hardly listen to my preferences and was kind of rude. May be he’s having bad day — but food is good and bang for the bucks!

Drop by for a quick, small lunch. If you have a big appetite, get two or go somewhere else afterwards.

Delicious and cheap! I came here for lunch with friends and this is a solid place. I was with an Indian friend and she said it was good so really, you can stop reading because my review is not worth nearly as much as her two cents. But, this is a place that’s fast and has a simple menu. And the Chana masala with rice was flavorful and satisfying — just the right sized portion, and the sauces and chutneys were a delicious addition. Decent naan too for a casual place. If I lived in Cambridge i would be a regular.

I arrive here at 11:40am and order a samosa. Guy cashier is not pleased with my $ 1.50+tax purchase but whatever (I paid with cash, so what’s there to be annoyed about?).
He says I’ll have to wait 5 – 6 minutes for the samosa to be done/​made. I wait for 10 minutes. He doesn’t call me over or anything, so I get up to inquire about my food.
The guy says nothing but opens the oven and retrieves the samosa for me. He boxes it with the sauce and hands it over with a half-​hearted, «Thanks… (for nothing)»
The service is subpar. The samosa is very small. The taste is decent, though. Good blend of spices and seasoning. Slightly crispy exterior with a warm potato filling.

Mediocre Indian food, but quick and cheap and customizable. I used to get the chutneys paneer wrap, but didn’t really like the paratha much (never tasted fresh enough) so switched to rice bowls. You can customize your order Chipotle-​style, and they have classic Indian drinks (Limca, Thums up, mango lassi).
Sadly, doesn’t even come close to real Kati rolls. But if you’re craving one quick, Chutney’s will do.

I want to say it’s pretty cheap but the truth is you don’t get that much food. I think my rice bowl had 3 pieces of tofu in it. She wanted to fill most of it up with rice bu tI didn’t let her! That and they serve you in plastic containers, even if you eat there, which is incredibly wasteful. I doubt I’d go back, wasn’t that good.

This is probably the best Indian restaurant I’ve ever eaten at in my life. And I’ve eaten in India, Pakistan, Houston, New York… You get the message
We had the aaloo masala and the chicken curry rice bowl… Could not get enough. Very generous serving sizes too. The place can be hard to find thru Unilocal so call them
