Acme Ice

Went to get ice on a Saturday night at dinner time. There’s no one in the shed, no way to get ice on your own, and someone is sitting in one of the Acme Ice trucks in the parking lot. He doesn’t come out to help us and turns off the lights to the truck like he’s hiding.
I’ve been buying ice here for 25 years, but it’s time to find a new place and report this jerk to management.

Company drivers drive like maniacs. I was driving on a one lane road, and their box truck passed me on the RIGHT and flipped me off. At the next set of lights, I was trying to see the phone number on the truck, and teenage punk driver deliberately opened the door of his truck so that I couldn’t see the number on the truck. Genius didn’t realize I could just google the name of his company truck and call his boss that way. They have no respect for the community they serve behaving like this. One Star.

Acme Ice has been providing Ice Luge’s and filling coolahs for Villen Keggahs for as long as I can remember. Great spot, tons of parking and they deliver.

Sometimes, throwing parties for hundreds, nay, thousands of people means needing a lot of ice. And when those parties are beer tastings, a lot becomes a metric buttload. Don’t question — butts are absolutely metric.
A call, a credit card number and a name on file means 40lb bags of wet ice delivered at $ 9 a pop. Grocery store fivers cost at least $ 2, so wholesale + delivery at just over 60% retail is a steal.
They understandably run a bit more Brookline Ice, with an added 10lb of cocktail cubes atop the competition’s 30lb base bag. Logistically, sometimes it’s a little hard to tell if a truck and driver are available («Call us back in 30 minutes»), but even on short notice, these cats are cooler than cool about getting goods gone.

I’ve been debating how many stars I wanted to give… it came down to 2.5, rounded up to 3.
First off, the service was friendly and fast. We drove up and someone helped us right away, listened to what we needed, shoveled us some dry ice, we paid and then we were on our way. Took like 5 minutes.
So why the 2.5 stars? For a place that specializes in and has dry ice in their name, it would be nice if their workers were actually knowledgeable on it…
We went there needing dry ice to last one and half days for a long drive. I did some research online before-​hand and was seeing that dry ice sublimates at a rate of 5 – 10 lbs per 24 hours, however we asked the guy how much we would need and he recommended only 6 lbs. In my head, I knew that was too little, but I didn’t argue it or ask for more because I figured «Hey, they are the dry ice experts.»
Well, he was wrong. So very very wrong. By the first 12 hours, it was practically all gone. The next day by morning, the cooler was completely empty. Luckily, there was another place on the way where we could get more to keep our stuff frozen for the remainder of the trip.
So when it comes down to it, really quick service, but do your own research on how much dry ice you should get for your needs. Don’t rely on their advice, because the guy that helped us had no clue.

Living next door to the Iceman has afforded me many pleasures. Not ice or peace and quiet at 5am, but pleasures of a different sort. Like watching them fight with customers, with each other, with themselves. I’ve also learned a lot about how to have finesse while on a forklift. All in all, an invaluable education.
Also, they have Booze Luges. Need I say more?

What can I say? They have ice. Lots and lots of ice. Dry or wet. When getting ready to head out for a little bit of survival style camping over the summer, I showed up with some coolers and left with just what I needed in dry ice. Everything stayed frozen for the 3 days we needed it too. Even the ice we brought for drinks. (That dry ice stuff is awesome!) If you have any questions about what you might need, ask. These guys are very helpful and will give you just what you need.

Once you and your friends get the inevitable roadrunner jokes out of your system, the fact that a place like this exists may just hit you like an anvil (I couldn’t resist). A twenty-​four seven ice monger, right here in Cambridge! Amazing. And yes, they carry that mysterious and magical stuff called dry ice.
Before July 4^th weekend, I never had much interaction with dry ice, other than the occasional appearance of it in the punchbowl of a creative house party. So when the need to keep foods reasonably cold for three days in the Vermont mountains came along, I was surprised when someone suggested dry ice. I don’t know how to handle that stuff. Where would I even get it less than 8 hours before we leave?
Oh, just this little place called Acme. Yeah, it’s open. Right now. We explained our needs to a guy I now affectionately refer to as the «ice man,» and he told us how much we needed, how to pack it, and what to do with it. Needless to say, we had plenty of wet ice and frozen goods in 90 degree weather for the entire trip. I never bought dry ice before, but it seemed reasonably priced– about $ 40 for the whole group, which bought more than enough to meet our purposes, with a little to spare.
I will most definitely be back.

In my line of work, I need to use dry ice sometimes 3 – 4 times a week.
Every time, I will use acme ice and get exactly what I need without fail.
They will go out of thier way to comply with everything you need, regardless of how busy they are or what himd of moods they’re in.
I’m there so much that Marc will try to guess what I need before I tell him, and usually he’s right on!

My party planning prowess has lead me to Acme Ice for all of my coldest needs. As someone who doesn’t own a motor vehicle, with a busy schedule and laundry list of things to do, Acme comes through with reliable deliver service. Even at the last minute, they filled my order, delivered it on time and called to confirm the delivery at the receiving address.
My only issue with Acme was my lesson in Dry Ice. The instructions given to me were pretty inaccurate, and the large chunk of ice I purchased for a Halloween party had my caldron bubbling for a mere 10 minutes, petering out before the party even started! No, this is not a euphemism.
I’ll continue to use Acme for the range of chilly products, including dry ice, cocktail ice and ice luges, all at fair prices.
