History

Established in 1895.

The first library in Camarillo consisted of a set of readers in a hallway at Pleasant Valley School. In April of 1915, Adolfo Camarillo spoke at a public hearing before the Ventura County Board of Supervisors in favor of establishing a countywide library system. The Camarillo branch of the Ventura County Free Library system opened in January of 1916 with 75 books. It was located in Mr. Israel Hernandez’s Camarillo Mercantile Company. In 1920 the library moved to a room at the Conejo Inn. When this Inn went out of business in 1931, Mrs. Ruth Fellows offered her sun porch as a temporary library. By 1933 the collection has grown to 350 books. The library is moved to a room in the new Community Center in 1941 — now numbering 8,000 books. Finally in 1962 the library receives its own branch at Dizdar Park with room for 15,000 books and a large reading area. Storytime and Summer Reading Club begin as regular programs. Today the collection stands at over 250,000 plus thousands of ebooks.
