Hadley Fruit Orchards

Unfortunately, the date shake doesn’t taste the same anymore… The texture is different, like they are using water instead of milk (ice chips). The old location made them smoother with more dates.
*I tried the new location twice, to make sure the first time wasn’t a fluke*

I went to Hadley Fruit Orchards in Cabazon, CA on 6÷14÷2016. While I’ve been there before, it’s been a long time. I, of course, got a date shake. A large one was $ 4.99 before tax and is well worth it. I also bought beef jerky as well as dried fruits and nuts. They also had a wide selection of jams and jellies. I got their mint jelly. The prices seemed high but things like beef jerky are always overpriced. If nothing else, get a date shake.

Disappointed they moved, but the Date Shake is still a must when passing through. Even if you arent a fan of dates you should still try it. I would never eat dates on their own, but it is good in the shake.

Now that I’ve had the date shake, I’m pretty sure I’ll stop at Hadley every single time I pass through to go to/​from Palm Springs. It’s SO good! $ 4.74 for a medium (including tax) is not a bad price either! I also love the free samples they have everywhere. You can try a ton of different types of dates to make sure you know which ones you like. Score!

Stopped here for the date shake. I wasn’t overly impressed with it. Tasted like a vanilla shake with a hint of date. Very little hint. Good but I was expecting more date taste.
It’s a mega store full of snacks, nuts, dried fruits and veggies, etc. No produce that I saw. I did like all the varieties of products and it is fun to look around. It’s a bit pricey on a lot of items. Getting to it from I-​10 east heading to Az is a royal pain. At least there was a lot of parking available once we arrived.
The store was nicely set up, easy to walk around, organized, samples of some snack items, clean and tidy.

Dang. What happened to you, Hadley Fruit Orchards? Located a few week from the ever-​lengthening Desert Hills/​Cabazon Outlet malls, Hadley’s «used» to be housed in this funky shack/​house/​cabin where the old grandma doled out mini date shake samples and everybody had lunch on the way to, or from, Palm Springs.
Now, what with the outlet malls, Morongo, and all, Hadley’s is in a brand new building and looks just like a Sprouts. Grandma is gone. In her place is a super long line for shakes that come out of a modern looking yogurt machine like the one at Morongo’s all-​you-​can-​eat buffet (which isn’t bad, by the way, join their Morongo loyalty casino club for $ 5 off the buffet price).
The experience is also very Sprouts. Tons of expensive nuts and seeds and dried fruits all packaged up … no deals here … Sriracha-​flavored peas anyone? $ 40 in snacks later, we were back in the car and off to Morongo — just 200 feet to the south. The Hadley chow line was so long we gave up, so I can’t evaluate the sandwiches and burgers.
If you could use that thing from the Jim Carrey movie that erases memories and wipe out the old Hadley’s, it might not be so bad. But for those who remember the «before,» the ‘after” is a bit of a dud.

Hadley’s used to be this ridiculously amazing outpost for date shakes, nuts, dried fruit, and when we were finally old enough, wine tasting! Now, it’s a grocery store. A very, very expensive grocery store. Yeah, it’s pretty. Yeah, it’s clean. Yeah, nice bathrooms. Those are all good things. Expensive things, apparently, that jacked the price of a container of dates to $ 9. And they still have soynuts – though not the ranch flavored ones. They also have repackaged M&M’s, which I couldn’t figure out. Is that even allowed? Anyway with the loss of its Cali-​weirdness, Hadley’s lost its flavor.
And whoever is responsible for that ill-​conceived and dangerous traffic circle…

Oh Hadley’s…
I had such high hopes for our first encounter.
I had always driven past this location over the years but never went inside to check it out until today. My fiancée and I like the new look of the new location. It’s very homey and modern inside, it doesn’t look like some renovated ranch home.
You get sort of a Whole Foods meets Sprouts feel but much more quaint and smaller than either. We got in line and ordered the Garden Burger and Vegetarian Sandwich.
A woman by the name of «I can’t recall» took my order. She seemed a bit grumpy but, maybe I was just reading into things, like the tone of her voice and body language. She got me my date/​banana shake (which if you’ve ever driven to AZ on the I-​8 you compare EVERY date shake to Dateland’s date shakes [FYI the best shakes ever]) and said I was number 76. So I sit down and wait while the Mrs. gets me a cold brew coffee and a drink.
«Number 63!» Yelled a lady behind the counter as I look at my number… Dang, maybe it’ll be quick. It’s just a couple of sandwiches after all… Despite being more than 10 orders away, not every order had a food item so I assumed it wouldn’t be too long before we received our order.
However, as I sat there watching the staff behind the counter, I could see a lot of scrambling around, faces of frustration, and incoordination. People were frustrated at others for one reason or another and others seemed to be unsure of what they should be doing. That’s when you know that you’ll be there a while. Every order before mine was no more than a sandwich or two and I kept assuring myself that the wait would be worth it.
After 30 minutes, I finally got my order number called (after the guy and lady who were after me in line, mind you. How that happened, I don’t know) and I grabbed my order. It was to go since we were driving down to the border.
Garden Burger: Small (3″) patty, lettuce, tomato on an equally, what seemed to be, sad looking wheat bun… That’s it… I had asked for EXTRA Thousand Island because I’m a fatty like that and there was none on the sandwich, only on the side in a small container. What exactly did I pay for? The honor of walking in and our of Hadley’s? Price to delicious ratio is extremely lopsided in the worst way.
Vegetarian Sandwich: Big hefty 7 grain bread with sprouts, tomato, lettuce and a spread. It was tasty, just incredibly unimpressive for the price.
Sprouts Market makes sandwiches at half the price and twice the flavor! So much so that you won’t miss the pickle and tiny bag of Fritos (I hate Fritos)
Sorry Hadley’s … You gotta get your sh*t together. That food you’re peddling doesn’t live up to the expectations manifested by your name and goods.

This is the must-​stop spot on the way to and from the dessert. It’s a market, and I know nothing about that… what I do know about is the date shakes and the banana date shakes. They’re amazingly delicious and I say yes to them over and over again. So, stop and grab a shake and then do whatever you feel like doing at the Morongo exit. There are a lot of options! But DEFINITELY get the shake. Get. The. Shake.

Couldn’t wait to visit this shop. I heard so much about it but I am not going to drive an hour for milk shake, or am I?
This is their new location it seems to have lost fruit stand charm. It looks like a modern grocery store with bunch of fun things.
Date shake: was so excited to try famous Date shake. Bummer machine was broken. Got a sample of banana +date skake. It was OK but banana overpowered date flavor. Maybe next time I will be more lucky.
Butters/​Jams: amazing selection with unusual flavors. Mango butter looked so good.
Unusual: beet, onion, garlic chips. I only tried beet chips. They were crunchy and sweet. A perfect snack.
They have plenty of samples: various dates, beet chips, Wasabi peas, and more.
Best: Date Bar is to die for. It is amazing. It is great as dessert or a full meal.
If you like dates and unusual snacks, this is a place for you. They also sell their stuff online so no need to wait until next trip.

The key reason to come to Hadley is for the dates and the shakes. The shakes are good but the ones offered by Shields in the City of Indio are one thousand times better. The shakes at Hadleys are made in large batches and are not made to order like shields. skip this trendy place and go to Shields instead. The sandwiches are very good here and I had the roast beef. Nice Place but overpriced.

Is this the OG place for date shakes? Idk, but this is where I always get mine from. Specifically, the banana date shake. Size large is a must. So delicious!
This is their new location and, while it’s super nice inside, I think their prices got higher. I paid $ 15 for a banana date shake and a BLT. Seems high to me.
Service is great though and the bathrooms are very nice, so it makes a nice road trip pit stop.

I enjoyed checking out the new store this weekend for the first time. As always they stock some pretty unique finds. The beet chips, onion chips and even garlic chips made it in our cart. I like the wall of sodas and drinks of all different types.
The new store looks nice but it lost some of its unique charm that the old store had. Now it is easy to forget what store you are in (sprouts, whole food, lazy acres, etc.)

Legendary place. New location. Also they have had an ownership change, now owned by Morongo Indian tribe. The date shakes which they are known for are OK, not great. Not enough dates. There are places in OC that make better. Hell even I can make better in our blender. All you need are dates, bananas, and vanilla ice cream, or milk. Good place to stop on the way to the desert. Carlsbad location has closed.

Hadley’s has been a staple in this area for FOR-​EVER!!! Though famous for their delicious dates, they actually have a ton more to check out than just that. They have recently moved to a new location down the street. While the new location looks very high end and definitely updated… nothing will compare to the coziness of their original location. All that really matters though is that their products taste the same, and they do.
I was in a race against time to get to this store before they closed. I haven’t been to this new layout so when I got there 17 minutes before they closed I knew that I had to focus. I zipped around and was able to find everything that I was looking for. I got all sorts of goodies to give away for Easter and to bring to the office.
Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to get one of their famous date shakes but I plan to get there early next time. Don’t miss out on this famous store if you’re in the area. There is literally something for everyone here.

So sad! They closed the original location and opened a new fancy place around the corner! The worst part is the date/​banana shakes taste terrible now!!! Another favorite childhood memory bites the dust! Why??? :(

Got off the freeway on the way to Palm Springs to stop at the new Hadley store. The new store is modern, clean, well stocked, and enough staff to help if you can’t find that special dried fruit or packed sweet dates you crave. Prices of these goodies are also new, or is it that you got less… We got the dates and a whole bunch of other snacks. Yeah, a bit of nostalgia hit us, you used to get more of the same stuff at the old green wooden building which is now hidden to the side. We kind of miss that orchard to country store feeling. A little disappointed that the wine bar was not open due to the licensing not being in place. At checkout, be prepared to show your picture ID when paying with a credit card. So now we are ready for that date shake. Umh, taste like vanilla ice cream with grind up particles of dates or nuts. Brain freeze Sweet, and thank goodness we only got a small size. The line and the wait at the counter got long so we decided we would not order anything else. The best part of stopping here is to navigate the two «Roundabouts” — traffic circles— to get you off and back onto the freeway.

Really bummed out about the new owners turning this once great, historically nostalgic pitstop into a bad impersonation of a Whole Foods. To be fair, its clean, organized and appears to have all the same old Hadley favorites like date shakes, trail mix, exotic sodas, and other packaged goods, but thats about where it ends. My wife and I stopped in today for the first time since they relocated into the new building and were very disappointed to see it retained exactly zero of the homey, historic feel of the original building. One of the staff members mentioned the old building was showing its age, but it seems to me with all the money spent on the brand new building, they could have renovated the old and kept the original nostalgia, which was a huge part of the cool factor of Hadley’s. The food in the café was very disappointing too. The same place that used to offer ostrich and buffalo burgers, not only doesn’t offer those anymore, but you can’t even get a regular beef burger… what the heck? So, instead I ordered the philly, but that was a no go, because they couldn’t make it without the bell peppers, so I finally settled on the bbq beef sandwich. Unfortunately, it tasted like something from my 4^th grade cafeteria complete with a Walmart grade bun. Definitely not an $ 11 sandwich. My wife ordered the «veggie burger» (go figure, you can get veggie, but not even a beef burger) and it was so over cooked, it wouldn’t break down as she chewed it… weird. Needless to say we were totally bummed. The staff was kind enough to refund our meals and we went to In n Out instead. While speaking with a staff member, she also lamented the changes and apologized for the food, especially the bbq beef, which she said she had been lobbying the owners to remove from the menu. She seemed as disappointed in the «new Hadley’s» as I was. In the future, we will bypass Hadley’s, because the cool factor is gone, the café food is no bueno and quite frankly, the packaged goods are overpriced compared to the Dowling Orchard a few miles up the road in Beaumont, where you can get the same kind of stuff, without the «wannabe Whole Foods» mark up. Very disappointed. It’s the end of an era for sure.

We have stopped in over the years many times. I have fond memories of getting date shakes for the long drives. But in the past I would have given it 5 stars. The old location was charming and it brought nostalgia every time I stopped. The new location while very clean lacks the personality and charm as well as the new packaging make it appear that the merchandise had downsized. The same it makes the appearance very generic. Like a whole foods or a trader joes. I heard one woman complaining to an employee about how disappointing the changes were.

Over-​priced for same things you can get elsewhere. Some hard to find goodies you just pay for it. They moved into a new building but not as sample friendly. Staff aren’t especially friendly. They used to give free popcorn but now it’s a dollar for snack size bag.

I love going here place has a homely county feeling great organic fruit. And cool exotic sodas and honey. was 5 stars but they moved to a modern place.

What a total waste of time do not stop only if you’re looking for some overpriced trinkets or dried fruit. but you think a orchard might have some fresh fruit in it

It was tough to now know to rate this, because I’ve been here twice with two different experiences.
The first time I went, it was in the old historic building. We came in to look around and see what it was all about. I loved that there were so many free samples just sitting there in the store. We also tried a date shake. If it’s your first time, they give you a sample of a date shake and a date banana shake. The date banana is deliciousss. The price is a bit much though, so I wouldn’t come often.
The second time I came with a group of coworkers to get lunch. This was in the new location. The line took foreverrrr. By the time it was my turn to order (I was last in our group of 7), I knew I wouldn’t make it back to work in time if I actually ordered (we had an hour lunch break, so that shows how long it took). No one was very happy with their food. Sure, the taste was fine, but no one could justify the prices. They ask so much for just a bowl of soup or a small sandwich. We even noticed that PB&J was on the menu… and it was $ 7!
So yes, the shakes are good and it’s great that they have samples of trail mixes and such, but the prices of the food (and the items in the store) are just so dang expensive.

Hadley is the ideal pitstop for people driving in between LA and the Palm Springs/​Indio area. We stopped for one thing only: the date shakes. My date said that he had many fond memories of going to Hadley’s on the way to his grandma’s house as a child. He liked the old-​fashioned look of the old store better because it had more «personality,» and it’s true that the remodel reminds me more of a Whole Foods than anything. But like Whole Foods, it is very clean and well organized.
Shakes were decently priced at around $ 3 for a small. I got the Date Banana, which was considerably sweeter than the Date. I also could not really distinguish a strong date taste, but hey, a shake is a shake. All in all it tasted average to me. The goods they sold seemed kind of overpriced, but I think if you are craving something sweet after a long drive a date shake is just the ticket.

I always wanted to check this place out, going to (or from) Palm Springs. Today, I did.
I was in luck, as they just moved into a new building. It’s exterior and interior are very nice.
The place is large and organized, with restrooms in the rear. There are loads of candies, nuts, snacks, drinks, and more «off the wall items» to purchase, with prices clearly listed on the packaging (based mostly by weight). They even had the largest tub of pistachios I’d ever seen, for just under $ 50!
There’s a deli with a take out menu, but I assume (hope) they’ll add a menu board later, to make ordering quicker. There are many indoor tables to choose from to snack/​eat on. There’s a side exit door that was locked, which seems dangerous should a fire occur. During business hours, that should remain unlocked as an extra exit route.
The vegetarian sandwich was okay, but the guacamole was gross, so we only forced ½ of it down, each. I also asked for a cup of water and it was disgusting. I blame that more on the new building and plumbing maybe, then the place itself. I quickly ordered flavored bottled water (watermelon), which didn’t taste like watermelon or much better.
Still, I’ll come back for a different sandwich or one of those large bags of beef jerky. Mmmm.

I Love Date Shakes!
We would stop by Hadleys regularly as a kid. It seems like things have not changed too much. There is a small grocery store with various goods and a large bathroom which seems to be the reason most people stop by. Easy on and off freeway access makes this a prime rest stop area.

There are several places in palm springs where you can get a great date shake. I happen to love dates and shakes. They use a soft serve ice cream here and the dates flavor is not very strong. I think the best date shakes are made with a quality vanilla ice cream, whole milk, raw egg, and half of a very ripe banana.
The shake here was just AOK for me.
Overall, this is the first time I have been back I’m over a decade. The shake was average for me.

The fruit may be good (I still don’t know…), but the service is grinchy.
I ordered a selection of stuffed dates to be delivered to my 90-​year-​old father for Christmas. I ordered it on Dec. 15, a full 10 days before the actual holiday. It still isn’t there.
But get this… It isn’t lost. The company didn’t even turn the order over to UPS until Dec. 21, – nearly a week later. This is unacceptable in the days of nearly instant delivery for most things I buy online. You ship next day, especially in the holidays, if you are a responsive merchant.
The saga continues. I finally got a message a day ago that UPS will deliver on Dec. 30– 9 days after the company transmitted its «shipping information» (but probably not the product) to UPS.
I sent a message to Hadley’s customer service a couple days ago and have not heard back.
Hadley, you have grinched out my Christmas with your unacceptable, unresponsive service, This is so not with the times in 2015. I will seek out a competitor for my next order.
Shame on you!

ID required DON’T FORGET ID WHEN USING DEBIT — I walked in store, bringing only my phone case that allows you to hold 1 card, which was my debit card. I purchased 2 peanut butter $ 8.00 & she asked for my ID. Since all I had was a debit card, I requested to use my pin# because I didn’t have ID on me. The rude cashier insisted I MUST have ID & couldn’t use my pin. She went off saying I couldn’t purchase items. so we started arguing… thankfully my brother spotted me cash & argument was over. STILL why cant customer use pin ???

We had stopped by Hadley because it was one of my cousins favorite childhood place to go to whenever he was living in Cali! He wanted to get their to die for date shake. Unfortunately, I did not try. I had walked around their little store and grabbed a few goodies. Dates, pumpkin caramels, prunes, water, and other little misc… I’m not a fan of dates or prunes but I bought them for my parents which they absolutely loved! They were a little bit on the sweet side but they enjoyed the fresh dates made in cabazo! I had the pumpkin caramels which were to die for!
The store overall needs a little update, especially on the restaurant side. Walking into this store and its location, I almost felt like I was in the desert in the middle of no where lol. I felt like I was the minority but really wasn’t lol

Two fold review here:
In store– Same (for the most part) high quality products that you have come to expect for years of stopping here. Lets face it, if its a date, its gonna be highlighted just about every way possible. The dried fruits and candies are still quite good but the size has shrunk and price appears to have gone up. So, the store gets 3 stars.
Online ordering– I ordered some items for the holidays, placing my order on December 11^th and my family received them 27 – 29 December… after paying a more than reasonable handling and shipping charge. Delivery gets 1 star.
The date/​banana shakes are still as good as ever and worth a stop between the desert and the city… just avoid the store part.

Their date shakes are a must-​have! Dates are a very traditional desert fruit, and Hadley has amazing date shakes. Seriously, amazing!
If passing through, this place is the perfect pit-​stop. Grab a shake and head over to the Cabazon Dinosaurs to walk around and stretch your legs.

DATE BANANA SHAKE!
I have been coming here for several decades. When I first visited, back in the 1980s, this was practically the only thing out here. If you needed a place to stop, this was your best bet and impossible to miss! Throughout the years, they’ve really built this area up and now Hadley’s is just one business among many! To me, it is the go-​to place of all the stores & restaurants in the area!
This place is right off the I-​10 and you will need to exit Seminole Dr. You will see Morongo. There is a tricky and congested roundabout you will have to maneuver around to get to Hadley’s.
When I walk in, I feel like I’ve been transported to a little town in the Midwest. It’s kind of like a country store. I love looking around!
This is a nice sized store featuring dried fruits, trail mixes, candies, honey, salsa, magnets, mugs, and a bevy of other local goods. The nice thing about Hadley’s is that there are samples throughout and you can try before you buy.
Yes, it is a little pricey, but what stores off the freeway/​interstates aren’t? They know that if you want it, you’ll buy it. A lot of the things they sell here are local.
They also have a Wine Room where you will find all sorts of wines and things to go with it. They also will let you sample wines, but I am not sure of the restrictions or if there is a charge.
Lastly, you will find a restaurant (more like a café). I make it a point to stop in for the Date Banana Shake! If you like dates and bananas and shakes, come try their Date Banana Shake! It is THE best and so rich and creamy! If you are not a fan of bananas, they also offer the Date Shake. They do have sandwiches, burgers (beef, garden, bison, or ostrich, I think), hot dogs, and ice cream. There are framed autographed pictures of the «famous» people who have been here. Their «Wall of Fame».

Back in the day, the restrooms used to be outside of the store. Now, they are conveniently kept in the air conditioned portion of the back of the store.
Whenever we pass through, I always try to stop here. Sometimes, it just doesn’t work out… it all comes down to timing the stop, which is tricky when you are on a road trip! The Date Banana Shake draws me in like a moth to a flame!

Hadley Fruit Orchards is acknowledged as more expensive than supermarket options, but at the same time I categorize this as a convenience store of sort, where if you’re traveling to/​from Los Angeles and Palm Springs, it’s a good enough place as any to stop by and buy some healthier and tastier snacks.
Sure, you’ll find the same items cheaper at a Trader Joes, even a Whole Foods or any supermarket, but where are those located as you pass Seminole Drive in Cabazon?
So, it’s fair enough pricing to get some dried fruits, nuts, and other snack items, including beef jerky to stop in and purchase. It’s cheaper than driving around or buying the snacks furnished /​offered at hotel rooms.
The standard pricing for beef jerky is about $ 1 per OZ for non-​gourmet, and I think it’s a bit over $ 2 per OZ here for more boutique, but not quite artisan beef jerky that’s packaged.
I bought dried mangoes on sale for $ 2.99 for 6 oz, which is fair and reasonable.
So, it’s not a bad place to stop for some snacks. You can read the labels and know some of the stuff isn’t unique nor home grown necessarily and some are pre-​packaged items you can find elsewhere, but regardless the selection is pretty good if you like dried fruits and an assortment of nuts.
Adjacent to the Orchard Store is their local legendary DATE SHAKES available in both regular DATE and a BANANA DATE shake. Many people stop here just for that.

Hadley is a must stop when you are on the I-​10 passing the Morongo Casino!
They have an awesome selection of all kinds of dried fruit, oats, nuts, Faygo’s & pretty much anything you would want to snack on or drink wile driving to your destination or for home!
We have been coming here and to their other locations that are no longer thriving for many years and always gotten great treats!
Hadley is more or less well known for their famous Date Shakes which I must say are one of the main reasons we stop here because they are quite delicious and unique to the California desert.
They offer the standard date shake as well as on that has banana in it as well. This time around I tried the banana one it was packed full of that delicious date flavor and had a few hints of banana In it which made it a refreshing drink to have wile we drove through the desert.
We also bought some wasabi peas and trail mix with cranberries which I’m happy to say made it all the way back home with us to enjoy at a later time and oh how they are good!
Only bad thing about Hadley is it’s sooo far away if it were closer I would definitely hit them up more often! With that said I will be seeing them on my next adventure to Phoenix!
Also don’t forget to check in if your getting a date shake because that way you will score a free bag of their delicious trail mix!

Who doesn’t stop at Hadley’s on your way east towards Palm Springs on the 10?! As sad as it is that was me and I was sure missing out on that infamous Date Shake!
The husband was looking for a sandwich shop on the way home from Joshua Tree and Hadley’s was the closest option without it being the usual sandwich chain restaurant.
Dozens of candies, trail mix, honey, beverages, dates and so much more goodies to choose from. Even little gifts! I loved their little sampling station! They have a little café on the side of the store where you can buy a quick bite to eat sandwiches and/​or the regular or banana date shake. Nothing too special about their sandwiches granted I only ordered a turkey sandwich but at least it wasn’t dry!
Prices here are a bit pricey in my opinion especially for a bag of trail mix for example but they’re in the middle of a truck stop with nothing else around so I feel like they can raise their prices! If you check in you get a free bag of trailmix but nothing to be that excited about you only get a 2oz sampler but hey it’s free so you can’t complain!

the one i had was a nightmare and tasted so old that it did not last 30 seconds before it went into trash…
