Eye Care Optics

I saw Dr Rong as a child, then switched Dr.‘s a few times after moving to the Cape in high school. After a few other eye doctors, I decided to make the trip to Burlington annually for Dr Rong. I can’t say enough good things about her. She is a great person who is very forgiving when it comes to slapping you with missed appointment fees and doesn’t up-​sell you unnecessarily.
I had contacts for 3 – 4 years before going back to Dr Rong and I couldn’t find a comfortable brand of lens or solution. Doctors just kept giving me a different brand and I’d deal with it for a year. When I went back to Dr Rong and told her about my issues she gave me 3 FREE follow up appointments within a month until we got my prescription and brand just right. Who does that?! This woman is a professional and cares about her patients.
Ignore the people complaining about receptionists, they come and go and are what they are. You go to the eye doctor to get the right prescription and find a comfortable brand of contacts. Go to Dr Rong and she will accommodate you until you are happy.
Also, the prices are pretty standard. It really depends on your insurance.

Dr. Rong is a great doctor who is friendly and through in the eye exams. 5 stars for her.
1 star for the customer service. Johena comes off very pushy and rude when it comes to make an frame and lens purchase. Don’t even think about asking about the price without her expecting you to automatically agree with what she comes up with in terms of pricing. She doesn’t even bother to explain or give you a breakdown of what she’s quoting you for (ie UV coating, anti scratch etc). And if you ask, she just gets even more annoyed.
Not to mention that Johena didn’t even bother to look properly at my insurance and deduct the right amounts and we were overcharged.
I hope she doesn’t turn many customers away for Dr. Rong. Personally, I will never purchase glasses from their office again. I’ve found a place that really cares and is very helpful in Insight Optical.

The place is really hard to find without GPS. I actually have to call the receptionist to get to the «VINEBROOK PLAZA» outside the mall. Looking for Wendy’s — that’s the sign you should turn in. I wish they have detailed the information online, which would save so much trouble.
Dr. Rong was great. Detail oriented, mild mannered and did a thorough job in exam.
The bad part, though was getting glasses and dealing with Ms. Johena on the front desk. First she forced me to lens options that my insurance (EyeMed) does not cover, and I also have little choice of frames that fall under the insurance allowance. I ended up paying 5x more for glasses than I did with a previous optics shop. She refused to take American Express «for personal reasons». It was said that you accept all credit cards on the website!
I wish I had read previous Unilocaler’s warning about customer service.

i have also had no so great customer service experience here with the receptionist. she’s not very friendly at all. her sidekick seems a little sarcastic too. they really should not be in customer service. Dr. Rong is very nice and hopefully these girls will not bring down her business. I don’t have insurance to cover a full set of frames so prices are very high. if i’m spending so much on a new pair of eyeglasses I want to take my time in picking them out. the receptionist let out a sigh at one point because I could not make a decision quick enough for her. she quoted $ 600 for a pair of eyeglasses with lenses done. Crazy! i went home and found a site that guarantees authenticity and free return shipping if not satisfied and the same glasses w/​lenses came to $ 290. don’t get ripped off here!!!

I’ve been a patient of Dr. Rong’s for 6 or 7 years now at best guess and have been extremely happy with her care. She is very thorough and always has me seeing at my best. But it wasn’t until recently that I found out how important eye care and specifically Dr. Rong were to me. My insurance changed and I was refererred to a different eye doctor. BIG MISTAKE. In my job I need to be able to see scoreboards and people at great distances at times. After 2 tries and 2 failures on contacts from the new doctor, I threw them away and went back to Dr. Rong and paid for it myself. Today’s lesson my friends: when it comes to eye care, nothing but the best will do. If you want the best, make an appointment with Dr. Rong.

I would not go to this place again if the girl named Joanna still works there. She is really the pain in the neck to work with. The first time that we were there was to get a pair of glasses. The process went well until the end when we learned the cost from Joanna. I knew we were supposed to get 20% discount on the glasses and frame because they are in my insurance network. When I asked about why we did not receive the discount, Joanna became visibly irritated and said she did not see such a benefit in my coverage. I had to show her my insurance coverage that I printed out before the visit. Still, that did not fully convince her that we were entitled for 20% off. Instead, she gave us like 8% off. I asked her why only 8%. She replied with a cold face: «This is how your insurance works.» What kind of explanation was that? I did not want to argue with her more because I realized I was wasting my time with this person. I called my insurance company on the next day and they told me I should receive a full 20% discount. While I was still on the phone with my insurance company, they made a phone call to her, which finally got her agreed to refund me the difference (about $ 65).
The second time was for soft contact lenses. Why did we go back to the place if we had had bad experiences from the first visit? Well, the eye doctor is very professional and friendly. Just unfortunately that they have such a person working in the front desk. Like the first visit, she did not give us a discount at the end, and I had to remind her that we were still entitled for 15% discount for the eye exam part even we had used up the coverage in the first visit. (I called my insurance company the day before to verify this.) Again, she became visibly upset after I remined her. She then made a phone call to someone. After she hung up, she said «Under normal circumstances, this is not allowed.» She then gave us 10% off. Again, I was confused what she said. Rather than arguing with her further, I decided to save my time with this person.
I won’t go back to this place again. If you like the eye doctor like I do and still want to try your luck, my advice is that you should understand what coverage you have and what discounts you are entitled to before you go (otherwise you will be overcharged without knowing it), and be ready to receive unfriendly face when you try to get things straight.

Three words… Horrible Customer Service. I usually don’t bother writing negative reviews but I was very unhappy with my experience at Eye Care Optics. This rating has no reflection on the doctor since I had no exam there. I’m glad the previous reviewer had a great experience, but mine was quite the opposite. They have a fairly good selection and I happened to fall in love with a frame. The girl at the front desk, Joanna took my information and luckily they accepted my insurance.
Joanna was rather friendly until we started reviewing my lens options. She would rattle off the name or measurement of the lens and the price and was annoyed when I asked about the differences. As we reviewed the rest of my options she got more and more annoyed when having to explain the differences between my options. I was so uncomfortable from feeling stupid for asking questions and hesitant because of the price, that I said I needed to talk it over with my husband and I left.
I did not want to give this place my business and I shopped around to find frames I liked better. I couldn’t find frames that looked better on me so I went back to Eye Care Optics. Luckily my frames were still there but when I went to finalize my order Joanna couldn’t find my file. She wasn’t sure if she misplaced it or threw it out, so with an annoyed and unapologetic tone I was asked to fill out my information and get my prescription again. The Optometrist was around while this was taking place and she apologized for the inconvenience.
I have experience working in both the retail and medical field so I felt the need to inform my fellow Unilocalers that the service here is unacceptable. If you are looking for a place that will take the time to explain and present your options clearly, efficiently and in a pleasant manner DON’T go to Eye Care Optics… especially if they don’t take your insurance. Every other place I went to in Burlington had great customer service and more affordable prices, but they didn’t accept my insurance.
