I went to Amy for hair straightening and it was really bad. The first time I washed my hair after 3 – 4 days, as she had recommended, the straightening was gone. Also I am experiencing heavy hair fall after that. I have done straightening multiple times and this is by far my worst experience. I would not at all recommend it. It is really cheap and I am sure the low cost is due to the low quality of products.

I got my haircut by Amy today. I was drawn in by the raving Unilocal reviews and I was not disappointed! Amy is fantastic. She did a great job cutting my hair and was extremely thorough and invested in doing it right. I am super satisfied with my hair cut and I think the price was really reasonable. On top of that, Amy is an extremely warm and welcoming person and she’s great to talk to! I will definitely be coming back!

Amy is phenomenal! Haven’t had a great haircut like this in 7 years! She’s the sweetest and funniest person too! And she cares about doing a great job– no 20 minute job here! I will come back and tell all my friends and family.

Amy is a total sweetheart and did a wonderful job, exactly what I wanted. On top of that, the price is pretty great for a San Mateo salon. Highly recommend Amy!

I wish I could give a proper review of Amy’s work, but I can’t. I scheduled my appointment online for noon. I arrived at about 10 till and one lady asked me if I was there to see Susan. I said no I’m here to see Amy — then another woman (Amy) said said, ME? You have an appointment with ME? Um yeah — I booked on line. She was surprised and in the middle of working on another client. I was early, so left and went back at noon, but she said it would be another 10 or 15 minutes — she would squeeze me in while her client processed. I declined the offer — I say, if you are going to have online booking then you have to look at. Also, the Salon is very dirty and gross. Big piles of hair sitting around and a filthy floor.

Amy was so awesome. I told her what type of hair cut suits my personality and she gave me one that looks so flirty and fun. She took her time and cut my hair in several stages to ensure my hair laid and moved appropriately. She added layers and thinned it out because my hair gets so thick and heavy. She accepts credit cards but uses Square so she loses some profit to Square. She prefers cash or check if you have it (about $ 50 for my hair cut).

Walked in with no appt. and pleasantly greeted by Amy and Susan. Amy cut my hair and flat-​ironed my unruly curls while Susan color changed my polish. Very sweet, and efficient service. I highly recommend coming here!

Amy did an amazing job on my hair! :) I wasn’t sure how it would turn out but she knew what she was doing and is very sweet& bubbly and easy to talk to. She always makes sure you leave the store looking beautiful. I love my hair!! I’m going here from now on :) thank you amy!

Another 5 stars for Amy! After reading the Unilocal reviews I decided to try her out as I was still looking for a hair stylist near where I live. And all I can say is Wow!
Okay actually I can say more than that: Amy is magic with scissors. I went from boring middle-​of-​my-​back long hair to a short, pretty, feminine, layered haircut that frames my face attractively. I showed Amy a picture of what I wanted and she got me there. The haircut was pretty complex and she meticulously snipped away for about an hour until it was the right shape.
I sat in the chair stunned at how well it turned out. I almost never like my hair when I’m at a stylists — I go home and «fix» it to my liking, but not this time. This time it was perfect! And my husband loves it too!

I went to Amy after not going to a salon for over 7 years. I wanted to lighten my hair for the first time because I’ve always dyed it black and I wanted a change. I am so happy I found Amy, she is absolutely amazing. She definitely takes her time and very thorough. She has a great personality and she makes you feel completely comfortable. She is definitely my official hair stylist and I will definitely see her again when it time for a cut. Thanks again Amy! You’re the greatest!

My life changed the day I found Amy! For years I have struggled with my disappointing haircuts. My hair is thick and wavy so most hair stylistsare too nervous and conservative about cutting into waves/​thinning hair. Not Amy! She is so confident with her scissors, that I finally got the short and sassy haircut I’ve been asking for years! I have literally spent over $ 200 for haircuts in a highly recommended salon that left me frustrated and grabbing for the straightener every day. She is definitely on par with highly trained stylists in Europe where I used to get a decent cut during my visits! I also have some sensitivity to color products and while many claim their products are natural, I was plagued with welts. Amy assured me her products are gentle and indeed, I have had no reactions so I’m now excited to color my hair.
Amy is a true professional, smart, cheerful and very talented. Most importantly, I totally trust her and let her cut away! I have never been disappointed.

Please avoid Japanese Yoko offer. My hair was not curly, it only had fuzziness. Spent half day and $ 260 dollars. Not worth a single penny. My hair still has fuzziness and doesn’t look like had Japaneses straightening. Really wanted to talk to Amy, went to her salon back, when I walked in she acknowledged fuzziness. She was ready for second round of treatment but I lost my confidence. Please don’t get attracted to the $ 199 deal. It is not real deal at all. You will be very disappointed.

After having one of the worst haircuts of my life, I was on a mad search for someone who was open on Sundays, and a reasonable price. Thanks to Unilocal,and all the wonder reviewers, I found Amy. She saved my hair, and I can’t thank her enough for it. She was super nice, had great ideas, and was a miracle worker with my broken hair. She put in layers just like I asked, and had great suggestions as well. I’ve been on the search for a hairstylist in San Mateo, and I believe I have found my match. Amy, I will be returning! And thank you soooooooo much for fixing my hair. I looooooove it!!!

I hope Amy stays in business for a long time, because she is absolutely amazing. I am not the easiest client — my hair is frizzy and curly and I don’t like to put any effort into it. I want it to be layered but still easy to tie back. I also don’t really know what I want, so I prefer to let the hair stylist throw ideas around. So far, I haven’t been completely happy with a haircut in years, and I’d started thinking it was probably just me and my unreasonable expectations.
Well, it probably was. But Amy blew me away. I was thrilled with my hair after she was done. She got it layered perfectly so that it is light enough to curl but long enough that the frizz is somewhat contained. I could still wrap it into a bun, no problem. It looked fantastic.
That was in April. It’s August now and my hair still looks great. I’m a little sorry about that because I really enjoyed the experience of getting my hair cut. I don’t, usually. I find it awkward and uncomfortable, but conversation with Amy was comfortable and easy. I had a good time, like talking to a friend, but she never took her attention off my hair.
Overall I’m super impressed. Amy is my go-​to stylist for as long as she’ll have me.

Amy is great! I totally messed up my hair with a home dye job; it was supposed to be a warm brown color but came out bright red and I looked like a cherry Tootsie Pop! I called Amy after searching Unilocal,Groupon, etc. I had never been to her before and it was very last minute (I had called around a bit, and was turned down by a few other salons because it was too short notice). I asked if she could fix it that day and she took me right away. I was a little bit late to the appointment because parking is not so great downtown but she was very easygoing about this and understood.
Since I was a new client, I got 50% off as she had a promotion going on. (Or maybe she always does?) So I got a color, cut, & style for a ridiculously affordable price. The color came out EXACTLY as I had wanted it to. The cut came out just as wonderfully, and both got noticed and complimented immediately after I got home from the salon. She curled it a bit, which no other stylist has ever done for me; others usually just go with a quick straight blowdry, which is fine but unexciting – and really, if you are PAYING for a style, they should do something you can’t/won’t do everyday at home. The curls/​waves looked great, and added extra body to my fine hair. My hair was pretty, shiny, and soft, not crunchy or damaged-​feeling.
She successfully juggled and entertained 3 clients simultaneously. She made sure we all felt comfortable and attended to. I’ve never seen another stylist pull this off. She is very personable, funny, and sweet. She really does take the time to really understand what type of hair you have, what you want (in both cut and color) and will also give you good suggestions regarding all of these things. She takes her time to make sure it looks great and that it’s exactly what you want, so it can take longer than you expected. She wants it to look good just as much if not more than you do, so you know she takes your hair seriously. She encouraged me to speak up if there was something I wasn’t 100% thrilled with, like length or color, because she doesn’t want you to leave disappointed and she genuinely welcomes your feedback. When she styles your hair, she tells you how to do what she’s doing and demonstrates it for you so you can try to do it at home.
The salon is located in the back of the Allure beauty store and you enter through the front door. It is very small, just a one-​person station for Amy; she is the only stylist there. There are also a couple chairs and a small table with magazines and a coat rack for those waiting to be seen, and the hair rinsing/​washing station is in a separate room around the corner. Don’t be put off by this though, it is cozy but makes for a very personalized, attentive experience. The parking in the area is Pay-​By-​Space, but if your meter runs out, Amy goes above and beyond and runs outside to put a quarter or two in for you. (She did this for me as well as another client.) She is very attentive to you, asking how you feel with the treatment, if you need water, and offered another client and myself some biscotti while we waited for our hair to process. (The other client got a Japanese straightening treatment I think, and it looked really great; super shiny and soft!)
The only things are: make sure you’ve got the day free (or at least a good portion of the day free) because it might take longer than you expected. I was there for a long time, another girl had the same thing happen. If you are crunched for time, wait until you have a free day and make sure you’ve eaten before you go so you don’t get hungry during your appointment. Also, maybe leave about 10 minutes earlier than you planned because traffic and parking can be tricky sometimes. Those are the reasons for the one-​star deduction.

Amy did a great job and was super friendly! I love my haircut.

This review is LONG overdue (that rhymes!).
Being a Family Fun Cuts girl (I’m joking… kind of) I’ve never been into spending a lot of money on my hair. One day though, I just got FED UP with my long, scraggly ends and decided to take the plunge.
Amy squeezed me into her busy schedule on 30 minutes notice. 30 MINUTES! Amazing, right? It gets better.
When I sat down in the chair she told me something I’ve never been told in my entire life: «So, tell me about your hair.»
WHAT! I was flabbergasted. Imagine a hair dresser actually asking about your hair. Usually the people I went to just heard what style I wanted and started cutting but Amy actually took the time to give me suggestions on what would work best for me and my soon-​to-​be-​luscious locks. The result? The absolute BEST hair cut I’ve ever had in my entire life. And, quite frankly, I had NO IDEA that my hair wasn’t naturally frizzy at the ends. Amy not only made my hair silky and smooth (Billy Madison, anybody?) but also taught me that how I was blow drying it was leading to the ends being frizzy. My boyfriend even noticed a difference– and THAT’S REALLY saying something.

Amy is wonderful, and so sweet. She saved my hair from a bad bad bad hair cute I got in December. We talked about the style I wanted, and also about my life. I’m busy, I have a kid and I’m an artist. I don’t have time to do anything with my hair in the morning but I still want to look good. She worked with all that, and the result is amazing.
I look great without brushing my hair, and I look even better if I take the time to style it in the morning ;-) it’s a win win situation.
Amy is really talented, her best quality is to adapt to the personality of her clients.

I don’t want to be redundant and repeat what previous Unilocalers have written, BUT. Amy is truly amazing and all of the below is true.
I haven’t had a hair cut in over 3 years due to fear of change and i am a fan of long hair. I go to Amy for facials — so I know that I can trust her. I was ready for change — maybe an inch off and a slight (side) trim on my bangs. I sat in the chair and she told me to try something new… to trust her, and honestly — i had no reason not to. I ended up cutting straight full bangs, cutting off about three inches, and added some highlights.
I have been getting nothing but compliments! it is a HUGE change, but a great change! Amy was knowledgeable and gave me advice on how to care for my scalp and hair — without me even asking for it. I love this place and now cannot wait to go back for some more!

This is a long overdue review for the Magician Amy! I saw her about 3 weeks ago for the first time. Being a biracial curly head I am very hesitant to who touches my head. One bad cut can end my good days as I know it. Upon meeting Amy I thought she had to have been one of the sweetest person I have ever met. She looked at me and my hair — made some suggestions (bangs — yikes!!) and talked me through the entire process. Although I have tried to be a no heat curly head I definitely have to use the flat iron for my travel days with work. I can honestly say that I have never had such silky smooth hair EVER after a flat iron.
I have NEVER received so many compliments on one hairstyle. My guy friend who is usually so quiet could not stop admiring it. First words out of his mouth «I LOOOOOVE IT! YOU LOOK ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL… even though you are beautiful every day.» Ha good clean up. My son was astonished… Mom that is beautiful! You look gorgeous! Ahhhhh… I have trained the men right in my life!
Now for the real test — the wash and curly style. Amazing… no choppy hair! Whoooo hooo! Although I think that the flat iron is super fabulous I did notice that my curls were a little looser than when I initially went in. This is important for those who are concerned about heat damage. Amy will give you all the information you need about the right products you need to bounce that curl right back.
Came back to Amy this week and the results are the same… Da Bomb Diggity!
Needless to say I am a regular! I love Amy to death… great hair help, awesome conversation and the best of all… puts the customer first!
