Specialties

We are a competitive and recreational fencing studio focusing on Olympic style fencing. We are an épée club and offer both beginner to advanced competitive classes and private classes.

History

Established in 1997.

Swords Fencing Studio is owned by Tigran Shaginian, a four-​time Russian national champion. Tigran has been fencing since the age of 7. Winner of the European Championship (1981) in the team competition and several other international tournaments, he earned a place on the Soviet Union’s Goodwill Games Pentathlon Team in 1984, proving him to be a top athlete in fencing, shooting, horse riding, running and swimming.

With over 40 years of competing and coaching experience, his students have won two Gold Medals at the Junior Olympics, two National Titles among juniors and cadets, and have represented the US National Team in the Junior World Championships five times.

Tigran is a four-​time Russian national champion. Tigran has been fencing since the age of 7. Winner of the European Championship (1981) and several other international tournaments, he earned a place on the Soviet Union’s Goodwill Games Pentathlon Team in 1984, proving him to be a top athlete in fencing, shooting, horse riding, running and swimming.

Tigran founded SWORDS in 1997. With over 40 years of competing and coaching experience, his students won two Golds at the Junior Olympics, two National Titles among juniors and cadets, and twice represented the US National Team in the Junior World Championships.

Swords Fencing Studio has transformed my son. I brought him here when he was 8 years old because he was very shy and I thought a few fencing lessons might help him become more assertive. Who could have guessed that he would become a nationally ranked épée fencer?! This is a very special club. The coaches, Tigran and Sorah, have guided fencers to the top level. They are wonderful, focused on conditioning, technique, and strategy, encouraging the individual students to be their very best. Students from Swords have competed on a national and international level and many go on to fence for great colleges such as Columbia, Stanford, MIT, to name a few. The entire Swords community of fellow fencers and parents is supportive, in a way that is unusual in such a competitive sport. I cannot say enough about this place.

Our daughters were introduced to fencing through a summer recreation class in Santa Clarita. At the time, my wife and I knew little about the sport and were referred to Swords by the summer instructor.
New to the sport, we found that there are several prominent clubs in the LA area and found to our delight that Swords Fencing Studio has the best coaches in region if not the state. Coach Tigran and Coach Sorah are amazing at their craft and come with impressive credentials and are nationally and internationally recognized. Kids as far as Antelope Valley to San Diego have traveled several nights a week to be coached by these coaches and to fence with their students.
Although my daughters (14 and 8) have just begun, I can see their progress in one year under the tutelage of these coaches. As with other sports, there are many challenges and sacrifices in the sport of fencing and we have found that the kids, their parents and the coaches at Swords are different from other clubs. They have been so supportive of one another and have created an atmosphere that is both competitive and comfortable. They do things the right way and teach their students to do likewise. This is not normal in amateur sports as any parent involved knows.
