Designer Door & Window

I had the same experience as many of the other Unilocal reviewers. My experience with Cam was great, he was very helpful and followed through. Ed however, horrible customer service. I must have called him 3 – 5 times to place an order, this is an addition to a few emails. When I finally spoke with him, he assured me he would call my contractor and get back with me. I never heard back from him and I will never do business with them again. It is too bad because Cam is a good guy and I have more materials to purchase, but Ed was so dishonest «I’ll call you back and let you know» that I just can’t go back.

My experience was very positive with Designer Door and Windows. Ed Hill help to find the doors I wanted at a good price and the installers Don and Lorenzo were amazing. They made sure that everything they did was perfect, ask me questions about anything that I might
be concerned about — — gave me good advice and their work was well thought out and done with pride. I love my new doors!

Went into the store looking for a security door, and Ed Hill told us he couldn’t help until we measured our door frame and emailed him the info. So we did that, but didn’t hear back from him. Called and left a message. Didn’t hear back. Sent another email. Didn’t hear back. Called and left another message. Nothing. So we went to another store nearby, where we ended up spending 12k on doors for our whole apartment building! I see from other reviews that I’m not the first customer that Ed Hill’s ignored like this. It amazes me that someone wants to run a business, yet can’t even master the most basic customer services; I’d advise people to avoid Designer Door & Window, as it’s almost certainly a reflection of their workmanship.

NO STARS. I called this place to ask for a quote on some windows I wanted to replace. I was told to send an email to ’
’ with the information on what I was looking for. On 8÷11÷2015 I took the time to take measurements and attach a photo of the style of window I was looking for. «Ed Hill» sent me an email back saying they were short staffed and someone would be back to me in a few days, that was in August, it is now October and no one ever got back to me. Terrible service — I took my business to STOCK Window & Door just down the street on Victory Bl. I spent $ 7,000 in new windows and received excellent service there. Skip this place — they won’t value your business like they didn’t value mine.

I can’t believe this business is still in business! We purchased a house full of CertainTeed windows from Designer Door & Window back in 2000 and experienced rudeness, a broken fence (courtesy of their delivery truck), shoddy/​sloppy installation & caulking. We then vowed never to do business with them again, nor would we recommend them to anyone — ever! Well, we didn’t, and especially after today, I can only say buyer beware!!! (***SEE BELOW)
I only called them because we have a few problems with those windows we bought from them. I called the store this morning only to be told by Cam that CertainTeed had gone out of business. (I looked online and found that the company is still in business.) When I explained the type of problems we have encountered with our windows Cam whined about how he didn’t think he could find glass the size of our windows. What am I missing here? Isn’t glass cut to order, etc? Absolutely the worst, rudest, and most aloof customer service I have ever encountered with any business I have ever dealt with. Seriously. I am not kidding. Run as fast as you can to any other window dealer!!! We are now dealing directly with CertainTeed’s warranty department to have our windows repaired.
***Years later we purchased a patio door and windows for our out-​buildings from American Vision Windows. Their customer service is exceptional, polite and friendly. Always prompt, courteous repair service. I wish I had purchased our house windows from them in the first place. Any other windows we might need in the future will be purchased from American Vision as well!

Worst customer service ever!!! Came in on a referral to see Cam this morning. Seemed like he didn’t really care to answer my questions. He rather check his UPS shipment instead of helping me purchase a glass interior door. And I was the only customer in the store. Any business that offers this type of customer service will FAIL!!!

I just called this place. Looks like a nice place on the web. I called and said I was looking to replace approximate 3 doors. Exterior doors. I offered send pictures and measurements. Things were looking to be going well. He gave me his email address to send me the pictures. I told me the next step was to come in pick doors pay deposit, they would come out a verify and handle everything. Was exactly what I was looking for. :) I verified the store was in Burbank. He said yes and asked where I was. I told him Granada Hills. He says don’t even bother sending the pictures because they won’t come out? I said «Really»? He said yes they are to busy to go that far. Maybe I don’t understand their business. But used to make that drive everyday. 12 miles (15 mins)? Maybe they are too busy? Maybe the salesman doesn’t know where Granada Hills is located, (but he didn’t ask). Didn’t offer any alternatives for me. He was nice enough on the phone. But seems like internet presence is not what there business needs. Maybe just a sign out front so the neighbors. Customer service seems to be directed to what benefits them.

I am sitting here right now at the store and there is one guy talking on the phone (a personal call) and another guy who is completely ignoring me! They all looked at me and just kept doing what they were doing. Wow! I stood here at least 10 min. being ignored. There is only one other customer here and there are three guys behind the counter. I guess I don’t look the part of the type of customer they want to do business with. I’ll just talk my $ 10,000 budget and go elsewhere. Never coming back here – not ever.

My renovation has taught me that the building industry is not for the faint of heart: you’re just as likely to run into drunks and sociopaths on your job as decent folks who know what they’re doing. Given that backdrop, Designer Door & Window has been for me a positive experience. They are a real old-​fashioned owner-​run shop, the kind of place a lot of people in Los Angeles have probably never seen. It’s not the fast food or big box experience. The owners are supremely knowledgeable and authoritative, and the staff have been patient and helpful during my frequent visits as I try to finish my own project on which I thought I would play designer. I can see that the shop is usually involved with architects on large projects, but they always have time for my small purchases. I wish I had found them at the start of my remodel.

This place is a great resource for specialty hardware that you can’t find at the big box stores. If you seek quality and unique designs, do yourself a favor and check this place out. We recently renovated our home that had those big gold brassy mirrors for closet doors. The label inside the doors had a date of 1975. They had to go. We replaced them with slick modern frosted doors from Designer Door and Window and it has really modernized the feel of each room. Ed and his associates were very helpful and made sure everything arrived on time and on budget. They have an immense selection of door hardware and their prices are better than anything on the web. We also ordered all new Emtek handles from them and we are very impressed with the quality. They take their time with the customers so keep that in mind if they are with a client when you arrive. The shop is fun to explore and you’ll appreciate it when you start asking questions as they go the extra mile to make sure you understand what you are interested in.

The custom wardrobe doors I bought at Designer look amazing. I was EXTREMELY happy with the price and finished product. I had the wardrobe priced out using my exact finished opening and the pricing was better than the other retailers I dealt with. These guys want to get the order correct down to the last detail. Good pricing and outstanding service!!! Ask for Peter and he will make sure your happy every decision you make.

First I’ll start with customer service, they were on top of their game! I was greeted as I entered and had all my questions answered right away! The displays were top of the line and their were many samples.
The inventory of doors and windows they have is amazing and they by far have the most beautiful and top of the line windows and doors you could ask for!
Needless to say, I eould exactly what I was looking for and wouldn’t go anywhere else now! Best service I’ve had in a long time and the owner is very professional and knowledgable along with his employees. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE WHO IS LOOKING FOR QUALITY IN BOTH THE PRODUCTS AND SERVICE!

I must admit that I never even looked at Unilocal before deciding to go with Designer Door & Window. I had a totally different experience that those that said the customer service was so bad. I shopped at least 8 door places in the SG and SF valleys and found Ed and his team had the best customer service and prices that the other stores. Ed’s installers showed up exactly on time, did a great door installation, were very nice and cleaned up meticulously when they finished. We had gone with another firm in August to have a french door replacement installed and we were not impressed with the installer or installation. I know, for me, any future door and window needs will be with them.

I am currently working on a new addition for my home and was referred to Designer Door & Window by a buddy of mine and let me tell you these guys are great! They are so knowledgeable about their business and very easy people to work with. Their store has a ton of samples and displays for everything we could need for our home improvement. From windows, to doors, to moldings and hardware, Designer had it all! I would recommend this company to anyone. Thanks again!

One star based on customer service, 5 stars based on quality products. Let me explain: They installed a family room door that exits to my backyard. The door and installation were top-​notch. Now a few years later I had wood floors installed in the family room and the door was removed for installation, but the installers could not align the door correctly. I made a visit to Designer Door & Window to inquire about having them realign the door they installed. They quoted me a price for what would take 1 hour of labor and wrote me a work order. They «would contact me» when they had time for the repair. One, two, three then four weeks went with me either calling or visiting to inquire about a time. The response: «We’re very busy and we start at 7 am, so we can’t fit you in». My response: «I start at 5 am so have someone stop by early». They never called and never really wanted to do such a measly job. Little did they know that my sister-​in-​law is remodeling and will need doors and several windows. Guess who won’t get a call? I eventually called Valley Sash and Door who did the repair two days later and for less money and the repair was perfect.

I’d like to give zero stars, but that wasn’t an option. This is some of the worst customer service I’ve ever experienced. They are not only not helpful, but arrogant as well.
I have been pricing doors and was told to check Designer Doors out. I wish I hadn’t.
When I got there, no one wanted to help me or even acknowledge me. Finally after some dramatic sighs, one guy cane over to help me.
After I explained exactly what I was looking for (I’ve been researching doors the past month), I was told that I wanted something different. (???)
I again explained what it was that I wanted and the guy said, «no,» and laughing, walked away from me. I kindly asked that he explain why he couldn’t help me. He just laughed and rolled his eyes and we tried to move on.
I was also told I couldn’t look at glass samples since he didn’t «have time.»
After I left, he called a couple hours later, because he forgot to write down the finish I requested.
An hour after that, he emailed me to request all the info again because he had «misplaced» it.
Please don’t support such a terrible establishment.

I agree with the previous reviewers. WORST customer service ever. Go somewhere else.
We waited 30 minutes to get a quote on some windows. Price to install each window? $ 2000 each! That’s just to install, not the window itself.
Besides, the guy giving estimates was not helpful at all. He gave us one quote and did not seem to care nor want to help us at all. I asked him a bunch of other questions and he didn’t even bother to look it up. He gave general answers like, I’m not sure or probably about the same. We ended up leaving due to his lack of interest in helping us. He obviously had other things on his mind. What a waste of time!

I’m 53 years old. Former newspaper reporter. HUGE consumer. Doing a gut renovation of a condo in Sherman Oaks. I’ve dealt with EVERY kind of person on the planet — from celebrities to politicians to street thugs… and of course, every type of contractor and service person out there. So when I tell you that NO ONE I have ever dealt with is as maddening and as disappointing as Ed the owner of Designer Door & WIndow, Trust Me.
I first called Ed five weeks ago to order 7 doors. FIVE WEEKS. Designer doors that would have cost $ 5K+. He wouldn’t come out to measure my door frames unless I paid him for installation. Fine. But unless I called him, he never did any follow up. He’d lull me in his sotto voce into thinking everything was being taken care of, and FIVE WEEKS later — and after a zillion phone conversations and emails — he still hadn’t come up with my request for hinges or door stops or a front door lock set, or prices to spray paint the doors, or a realistic solution to my door jamb problem. He always promised to get back to me – and then NOTHING. I always had to call him. We were no closer to ordering my doors today than we were FIVE WEEKS ago…
Finally, after hearing his excuses again today, I told him I was near tears, that I felt that all he’d been doing is Yes Ma’am-ing me. And his response was that «I was right» and that I needed to find someone who could better serve me…
Well, he’s right about that. And YOU can find somebody better to serve you.
Really, the WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!

I wanted to replace the heinous, «contractor special» front door on my house. After doing tons of research, I chose a Jeld-​Wen door as a replacement… then almost had a heart attack when I found out how much it cost. I looked everywhere, I mean everywhere, for a less expensive way to buy this door. After reconciling myself it was going to cost big bucks, I chose to buy it from Designer Window & Door. What I like about them is they have reasonable prices, are honest and know a lot about doors. What I don’t like is their customer service can be variable — sometimes you get a call right back and other times it takes a while. These guys do go out of their way to advise you on what you really need. For example, I wanted a prehung door, and they told me there was no need since my doorframe was still perfectly good and I’d need to have a little stucco repair done if they pulled out the frame. I love people who manage your expectations and give you the real scoop. So despite the fact they’re a bit slow, the fact they’re so good means they’ll be replacing my back door shortly.
