Amvets Thrift Store

I dropped in for my first ever visit to an amvet store. I’ve been mostly to goodwills, thrifty and salvation army’s. I must say, it is really well organized and prices are well market. That makes shopping at a thrift store way easier and caused s lot less stress when trying to sift through all the weird stuff you can find.
Parking is no problem and drop off of donations are made pretty easy too. Unlike the goodwill nearby the do stock a few pieces of furniture which is helpful at times. I’ll be popping in here once in a while to do some treasure hunting in the near future.

Every time I come to Amvets, I have Macklemore «Thrift Shop» replaying. No shame on that.
The store is a diamond in the rough. I found many shirts and pants that still have the price tag on. As a college student, 3 dollar shirts and jeans, I am not complaining.
You really need to do some digging and you’ll find what you need. The worker is very nice as well.

This place is heaven for thrifting fanatics like myself. This is a thrill-​of-​the-​find type of store. You’ll be thinking, «where have you been all my life» upon entering the huge building that is jam-​packed with clothes, books, toys, and everything a thrift store has to offer. Mackelmore’s 20 dollars would go a long way here. You get a coupon upon each purchase. They offer military and student discounts.
You’ll also be thinking «wow. what. is. that smell». That, my friend, is the sweet scent of aging stuff, just waiting to be plucked by you from its very plot. You get over the ripeness once you enter the thrifting trance: a state of mind in which external stimuli cannot breakthrough your vicious filing of odds and ends.
In regards to clothing– put in the time to search. You’ll find something of value.
A review discusses the benefits of shopping second hand. This means you’ll not be directly supporting large clothing companies – most of which are often involved in unethical means of garment production (child labor, poor working conditions, unlivable wages, etc.) I couldn’t agree more. Take a break from the fast fashion world. You’re doing a favor for your wallet, the environment, and you’re taking step in the right direction to lessen the demand for this unethical supply. Keep it up!

I’m a big fan of buying second hand, and as with most thrift stores it can be hit or miss on any given day. Usually I go to AmVets to hunt for basics and keep my eyes open for the amazing… such as the silver, sparkly, wonder dress I found recently. I think clothes is this store’s strong point though I’ve found other useful odds and ends as well, such as a CD rack for a dollar.
Other notes– the staff has always been friendly, they accept donations whenever they are open and readily give you a receipt, and the parking lot is large with plenty of spaces available. The one day where AmVets gets really crazy is on Memorial Day when they have a big sale.

Love this thrift store. Always walk out with a sweet gem. So far– I’ve scored beautiful dresses, 2 ringer Ts (a natty bo and a pinball champ) and 70s maternity wear. I love it. Good prices! Highly recommend!

What more can you say, it’s a thrift store… see if what you want is here at a nice price, AND help the Vets. Great deals to be had, bargains to be found.

Was told someone would call me today regarding the screw-​up that took place on Saturday. …and guess what… NOBODY CALLED… I guess I was not surprised.

I just picked up two brand new items with the tags still on them for 10 bucks and some change. Score!
It looks like they are trying to get things a little more organized here too with creating categories for the brick-​a-​bract section. All of the books are nicely lined up so that you can see the titles as well. Of course, organizing them by color would not have been my choice but um, OK.
Just one more suggestion: see that space next to the three dressing rooms where people wait forever while others try on 500 items? Maybe you could add some more dressing rooms there?

There is a lot to like about Amvets. It’s cheap. It’s arranged by size and well-​maintained at that. Not perfect, but when you’re getting pants for $ 5, you should be ok with a little discord.
The selection of men’s clothing was pretty good… more than I usually see.
Another thing; Amvets doesn’t (on the face of it, I hope, not researching it) have anything to do with Jesus. I prefer to give my money (even the tiny amounts) to things that don’t endorse a magical man in the sky.
I could not believe how cheap the furniture was… something like $ 7 for a big ol table.

Amvets Thrift Store: An absolute mecca for thrift shoppers.
This Amvets location is gigantic and a rip-​roaring good time to check out. You can find some GEMS at Amvets. I plan on getting future Halloween costumes from this location. Sooo many clothes, so much furniture, and so much fun! Also, did I mention they offer discounts on certain days and holidays? 50% off on Memorial Day, for example.
I do wish Amvets had a better selection of used books but I know there are other thrift shops (and used book shops) in the area I can go to for those. I’ll be going to Amvets exclusively for clothes when the time is right. Huge parking lot and fairly convenient location.

Furniture, aisles upon aisles of clothes, board games, picture frames, dishes, toys and all other possible hand-​me-​downs you could think of.
I never got much into thrift store shopping, but I’ve purchased a few items from here with some success. My most embarrassing purchase were probably my swimming trunks. I was doing laps at LA Fitness next door, when my trunks met their end (the string fell off), so trying to find swimwear in January around North Buffalo was an unsuccessful feat until I came here. And of course, there they were. Used swimming trunks (it’s almost like buying used underwear =\).
I bought them. Didn’t wash them and swam in them. Shhh. It all worked out, because I was able to get my exercise in.

Whether you’re a collector, a hipster, a hoarder, or a bargain-​shopper for richer or for poorer, Amvets’ warehouse-​like inventory should pacify your primal thrift-​shopper/​hunter/​gatherer needs.
Perpetual Inventory! I usually prefer to set aside HOURS to really poke around in every department. I sift through clothing, fondle furniture, carefully examine knick-​knacks and peruse pre-​digital media. Their prices, though higher than some thrift-​stores, are reasonable and proceeds support our American Veterans which is nice.
Clothing is (dis)organized by size and knick-​knacks are displayed haphazardly. They have three filthy dressing closets with no locks. Careful!
Recently, they re-​arranged the toy/​game section. No longer within a child’s-reach, you’ll now find them in cascading bins above the clothing racks. There are electrical outlets in the electronic section to test merchandise. If you happen to find an item without a price tag the cashier will have to page a manager to assess it. Check out and around the glass-​paneled display cases at the check-​out counters for higher-​end items and oddities.
Currently, checking in on Unilocal generates an instant $ 4 off $ 15 or more coupon. In the clothing departments, you save 20% per piece when the color of the price-​tag matches the color of the signs hanging from the ceiling. You’ll also automatically get a stamp on your receipt for $ 4 off visit (good for two weeks after purchase). I believe there is also always a discount with proper Military I.D.
Enjoy the hunt! Fill a cart! Have fun and don’t be ashamed to ask a cashier for hand sanitizer on your way out.

This place is huge! It could be a little cleaner. They improved their hat rack area to be more organized. I can always find awesome house decorations for a good price. They will do discounts at certain times such as 50% off furniture. They seem to receive more furniture here than Savers down in Hamburg.

There are better thrift stores elsewhere. Who ever is pricing merchandise has no idea what something is really worth! Try the Goodwill in West Seneca or on Delaware for better deals!

So my friend Bethany is the one who got me into thrift stores. She’s probably one of the most creative and stylish people I know so I was surprised when she was telling me how she buys most of her clothes at thrift stores. She’s a big proponent of social justice particularly in regards to clothing, and was telling me how shopping at a thrift store is a great way to buy clothes without directly supporting clothing companies that use unethical production practices (i.e. sweatshops). There are some cool companies that produce clothes in-​country but are naturally much more expensive. So she presents thrift stores as a middle ground where you’re not directly supporting sweatshops.
Thanks to Bethany, I often find myself here at Amvets. As one reviewer mentioned, it is definitely sometimes a scavenger hunt but isn’t treasure more satisfying when found that way? This particular thrift store is very large and naturally can’t afford to keep things organized as well as your local Macy’s store. For the size and staffing, they do a good job. Other than clothes, they have a great selection of household and kitchen items as well as a nice record/​LP section. Not many thrift shops can boast that. I also appreciate that they have a big bin right inside the front door where you can drop off donations — most thrift stores I’ve been to have you drive around back.
One common complaint I’ve heard is that the clothes at thrift stores smell funny. They don’t smell as bad as my dirty clothes hamper and I end up wearing those clothes, after I wash them of course. So I just throw the clothes I buy at the thrift store into my hamper to get washed with the rest of the smelly clothes — they come out smelling fresh.
This store has a great selection and I always love the price tags. The icing on the cake is when someone compliments you on your outfit — little do they know you are rocking some fresh second-​hand treasure.

A solid thrift store with a large selection of furniture, clothing, household items, books, and records. The prices are very reasonable. The selection turns over quickly, so there’s alway something new to look at – but don’t think you can just come back tomorrow (or even in a few hours) for something you saw and passed on; chances are good it will be gone.

My husband and I like to shop here for vintage finds. We usually find some random things to pick up as well. We’ve gotten clothes, shoes, furniture and random knick knacks all at low prices. The store is kept as nice as it can be for being filled with so many things. I donate here as well. No complaints!

Ok, I wouldn’t say I ‘shop’ here, nor did I take advantage of the student discounts, but this place is a college student’s dream for furniture!
All I remember is negotiating for a microfiber loveseat from like $ 20 to $ 10.
Way better than any stores — leave that for the rich Long Islanders. Us Brooklyner students shop at AmVets and negotiate deals for furniture that could have come from a homeless person’s living room. Yes, I know that doesn’t make much sense.
If I were in school at UB again, for some God-​awful reason, I would definitely buy my 10 dollar couches here. I mean, after all, where the hell else can I do that?

A shabby store where I’ve found some marvelously chic clothes!
This AmVets is great because it’s huge and convenient — I’m always tempted to stop whenever I’m puttering down Elmwood or rolling over to Hertel. I always go in thinking I’ll just look for one little thing — and end up dragging a huge pile of used clothes into the fitting rooms. It’s not very organized, but they’ve just got a TON of stuff, as Diana R said. And though it seems a bit picked over, it’s possible to find some gems.
My favorite thing to look for is the blouses. Lots of old-​lady blouses that can be dressed up in funky ways. And purses, too. And shoes. And records. Okay, I guess I have a lot of favorite spots in this store… just go!

Okay, a solid 4 for nostalgia and selection. I’ve been shopping here for over ten years (since I moved up here to go to Buff State in Sept of 2001; we used to walk here then because no one had cars). I go at least half a dozen times a year, maybe more, as I still live super close (1.5 miles). I’m a thrift shop/​yard sale junky — 90% of my stuff is used; not only does it give me access to more unique stuff but it has also saved me a butt load of money. My house has a very retro-​meets-​opium den look, not a «this looks like a catalog» vibe like my friends who have to have «new» everything.
Amvets isn’t the cleanest place (no fault of the workers; customers do some pretty disgusting, inconsiderate things), it hasn’t been updated in forever, and there is absolutely nothing «hip» about it (other than the ironic «hipness» all thrift stores have). The workers are pretty friendly and rotate regularly as they are largely college kids. They do a pretty good job of keeping things picked up and organized despite customers constantly throwing things on the floor or leaving them somewhere other than where they found them. They have ample carts and parking.
They are always PACKED to capacity with stuff — you have to have incredibly narrow tastes to not find something. They have some of the best bric-​à-​brac (the long row of shelves filled with random knick knacks, house wares, décor, etc for the uninitiated) in town. Their prices are very reasonable on these items, including cookware, dishes, storage containers, etc. I was able to furnish every room in my house with a vintage trash can (so tiny and cute!), score a bunch of planters and get copper bottom pots. They regularly have very nice vintage and modern furniture at reasonable prices. I dressed almost every window in my house with vintage, thermal lined drapes from this thrift store for about $ 7 a pair. They really cut down on heating and cooling bills — I looked for new ones like this and they were thin, crappy and cost $ 12 a panel!
People need to get over their «that’s used» phobia. If you knew how many people sweated on, handled and tried on your «new» clothes before you go them you wouldn’t worry so much. This is what a washing machine/​dry cleaner was invented for.
