On the company website, they advertise that CBS needed a reliable source to unravel a mold cleanup scam in the Northwesy (website spelling) suburbs. To do that, they called Safetstart’s air quality expert Larry Schwartz.
In my opinion, they got the wrong guy to talk about scams.
Safe Start told me my house was «safe». Despite having a hot tub, they never bothered to check behind the walls for mold. Thousands of dollars later, this company was not willing to reimburse me for any of the remediation expenses or even the fees we paid them. I would never use them again. I should have taken the money and threw it down the toilet. For $ 850, I expected much more.
I was told by another mold consultant that the first thing SafeStart should have done was check behind the walls which the contract we signed allows him to do.
Maybe CBS should be investigating the «expert».
I felt ripped off! I would never recommend this company. When I showed Larry the pictures of the mold his response was that is was not detected because it could not be seen. Like Michele F’s review states, Larry boasts of all his accreditation’s but seems to being missing the one for care and common sense.
I would never use this company again.
Regarding comments the owner make below, the credit card charges were not reversed because of the excessive time it took to accumulate the documentation regarding the thousands of dollars spent from his error. The facts I stated were accurate. While the professional organization referred to denied my request, other professionals in the field told me this was something that should have been easily identified and that his contract allowed him to look behind the walls. I was never advised that he had no legal authority to do so as stated below. Why was is in the contract if it wasn’t true. What is true is that the professional organization he is a dues paying member of would not return my call when I asked for an explanation as to how they came to their conclusion.
I don’t know what he told his professional organizations to avoid being sanctioned but I would never recommend this company. They mention many satisfied customers, yet the only thing I found on the internet were other people who had used him and were just as dissatisfied as I was (with one exception). Note that his response never included an argument that he was right. While we all make mistakes, it is how a company handles the error that makes the difference. Read his response and tell me if this is the kind of company you would want doing work in your house. The comment about this being a buyer inspection is a joke. Why would you hire somebody like this.
The two things he is correct about. 1) I am angry over the services he said were performed and 2) I am conducting a campaign to prevent this from happening to other people in the future.
It is insulting that the response (the owner I assume) states my comments are not true. There was mold yet we were told the house was safe. All the more reason I don’t trust them.
To the individual that gave him a good review — did you ask him if he made commissions on all those referrals he gave you. I don’t know the answer but would sure be curious about it.
I would never use this company again.

Beware of this company! Larry, the owner, did a mold inspection in the home I was buying. His report– NO MOLD! After closing I was told by my handyman and finish carpenter the attic had mold. Larry returned to re-​inspect. He agreed there was mold but he could not see completely due to the old owners belongings in the way. He may as well have been looking it a dark room and reported no mold. Now that the lights are on and he can see clearly he changes his mind. His answer to his incompetent and incomplete inspection, is you should have noticed it pre-​closing. I am not a mold specialist. He is and was paid to do a complete professional inspection. Larry boasts of all his accreditation’s, I think he needs a refresher coarse in mold inspection. Spend your money wisely do not use this company.
