Specialties

Speech and Language Development Center is a leader in special education with 60 years of experience in the field. We serve students six months through 21 years. The majority of our students have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

One of the unique strengths of our program is the comprehensive array of onsite therapeutic services that students at similar schools typically have to travel offsite to obtain. These include audiology, neurofeedback, Adapted PE, Occupational Therapy, and Physical Therapy services.

Speech and Language Development Center provides concentrated expertise to serve students with a variety of auditory, expressive or language processing difficulties. Most of the students we serve have neurologically-based challenges with a speech, language or other communications component. And most, if not all our students, cannot learn with traditional teaching approaches. Our students require intensive, sustained educational and therapeutic interventions to make progress in basic areas of human development and communication.

Our mission is to provide education and therapy to children and adults with special needs in an environment that nurtures growth, inspires achievement and maximizes their potential.

History

Established in 1955.

The story of SLDC began in 1955 in a home in Long Beach, California. In that living room, two speech therapists, Aleen Agranowitz and Gladys Gleason, began working with three parents and their children who had speech, language, learning and behavior problems. They had been lost in a maze of misdiagnoses. The children were diagnosed as aphasic — a term little used with children at the time.

In spite of the casual surroundings, important things happened in these early years. The parents formed a group of their own to hold informative meetings and support the Clinic. As they primarily represented a community service, they applied for and received nonprofit status. The Board of Directors was formed. Several of the early board members have continued through many years of volunteer service. The Clinic officially became Speech and Language Development Center.

SLDC is now located at 8699 Holder St. in Buena Park, CA 90 620.
