The YMCA in general has a fantastic atmosphere, and their staff are friendly and helpful. Their equipment is clean, and maintenance is kept up on. Aside from normal gym stuff they offer free childcare while you are working out, a ton of free classes, a swimming pool, indoor basketball, etcetera. This Y in particular is my favorite of the louisville area. The facility doesn’t really have anything special that the others don’t offer. It’s the patrons! The attitude and mentality of the people going there is inspiring and fun to be around.

So I’m in from out of town for the holidays and I needed a place to do a couple of workouts. The Buckner YMCA was by far the closest place to do so. I called to see if I could PAY for the use of their weight room for a couple of visits. I was told that since I have no family or friends with memberships and since they don’t offer weekly memberships, they couldn’t help me. Really?! Turned away a the YMCA? Centers like these always find a way to get you in. Especially if you’re paying. The person I spoke with was absolutely no help. This particular Y apparently doesn’t want patrons, or I just got an idiot on the phone. Either way, what a joke!

The crowd is a bit older at this branch of the YMCA, so expect more AARP magazines than Shape, more water aerobics classes offered than spin. The facility is nice and the staff is friendly to a fault. I never have a problem getting the equipment that I want when I want it and there is a regular set of gym-goers that you can expect to see most mornings(including me!).
