Twig Terrariums

A beautiful shop full of gorgeous plants and terrariums. Everything is really healthy and well cared for. I bought a terrarium here for my friend and it came with really great care instructions and a great bag for transporting it.
The terrariums are a little expensive, but it’s worth it for how beautiful they are. And even if you don’t want to buy, its a lovely shop to peruse.

I received a gift certificate for a private workshop for my birthday, and I had the most incredible time! The owner, Katy, was so incredibly welcoming from the moment I came into the shop. She explained how the workshop would go, and then introduced me to Lauren, the instructor. The next hour spent making my terrarium was so fun! Lauren was so helpful, engaging and kind. She has an incredible eye for design and an expansive knowledge of plants. She helped me tailor a terrarium that would be right for the space and lighting in my apartment.
I now own 3 terrariums from twig and will probably buy more. I can’t say enough good things!

Very nice people. My girlfriend bought me a terrarium as a gift. The figurines that came with it (which aren’t their standard ones) needed to be replaced and they sent me new ones right away.

Ok, so this review is overdue, but so necessary. My wife and I were married in late October 2015 and we had a tented reception during which we wanted to mix formal and outdoorsy elements. We live in Gowanus and had been to Twig a few times (mainly because it’s next door to Runner & Stone). We wanted to do something unique for our wedding and decided to see if they would be able to create 10 – 20 terrariums as centerpieces for us that were scenes of the two of us doing things we do (camping, cooking, climbing, proposing, etc.)
We met with Katie, and after she answered our questions about her awesome literary tattoos, she went through a ton of options for glassware, scenes, sizing, centerpieces, and other options for decorations. Over the next ~6 months they patiently worked with us as we fine-​tuned the scenes, the number of glasses, the logistics of getting them upstate, and everything else. Throughout the whole time they (Katie and Michelle) were so passionate about their craft, and didn’t stop coming with creative ideas for us. It was also such a great experience because there was really no pressure.
They love what they do and they want to share it with people, not just sell it to people. In the end, the centerpieces were probably the coolest, most unique aspect of our wedding, and something we had a lot of people comment and ask about.

I’ve been here 3 times. Once to buy a terrarium for a terminally ill friend, a second time with a friend who was looking for a quick gift (so impressed was I the first time that I had to recommend it), and finally to make a gift for friends getting married.
It’s rare to feel like friends with a customer service person you just met. Not only did she gently nudge me into custom making my terrarium with her but I was able to do it right then, on the spot so that I wouldn’t be struggling to do it on my own with less than 24 hours before I had to fly.
Her instructions were perfect, she cheered on my creation and I left a sappy, happy, terrarium maker. I got a custom made unicorn right then as well.
While it wasn’t cheap, I know my friend’s will enjoy longevity in this gift. Also, they do have affordable already made terrariums and small plants. They can customize things in a matter of minutes if you want some thing fun with tiny figurines and nature scenes.
Overall, if you’ve run out of ideas for a gift, you probably can’t go wrong with a terrarium.

UPDATE: the store eventually emailed me back and sent out new moss free of charge. I appreciate the gesture and it did allow me to make the terrarium look better; but I was never able to replicate the quality of how it looked when it first arrived (I don’t claim to be a specialist here :))

Terrariums are definitely IN right now, and Twig is a really, really cool place to see or purchase some. They have ones of all sizes, some pre-​made, and some kits. They also have constituent parts for you to make your own custom one. Sure, it’s not cheap, but hey, they look very well made. They have some tongue-​in-​cheek morbid ones (there was one of a dead body excavation) as well as some funny ones. They also have a huge space in the back, which I assume is where they do their classes. Seems like it would be a cool activity for the kids!

Really nice people. Let us stop by on a day when the shop is closed, so we could get a rehab on my daughter’s moss terrarium, which had gone moldy. Did it beautifully while we waited, for a pittance! And gave us helpful tips to avoid the problem in future.

I recently purchased the brave new world terrarium as a gift for someone really close to me. I have always gone out of my way to help smaller businesses and avoid purchasing from chains especially for personal gifts. Needless to say, I was really excited to order a personalized terrarium. I was very upset however upon receiving my purchase. I felt as if the personalization was lacking– there was simply two clumps of moss thrown on top of the dirt and stones. The glass structure was thin and smaller than appeared in the photos. I looked up the prices for everything separate and felt as if the $ 100 I paid was way too much for the product I received. I love to see small business prosper but not at the expense of quality. I tried emailing Katy and Michelle but never received a response. Better off buying your own supplies. Very disappointed.

Their moss terrarium classes are amazing! The teacher was super helpful and knowledgeable. The vibe in the store was very chill. The options in the store are endless, from already made terrariums to DIY kits, great store!

5 stars isn’t high enough for this spot, what a gem. Firstly, the terrariums, kits, and terrarium «accessories» (for lack of a better term) are not only beautiful and varied, but also ridiculously affordable. Secondly, the classes they offer to the space itself is a welcome addition to any neighborhood.
After scouring the web for DIY terrarium kits, I was left with few options. Twig Terrariums had reasonably priced kits, so I called on a Sunday to make sure they had enough in stock. I was told they would be open the following day and to stop by after 10.
I show up and find a «closed» sign on the door, as you could imagine, initially I was upset. A brief phone call revealed not only had they set aside a kit, but they intended to let me in even though they were closed. Furthermore, the woman who assisted me offered me shipping (across the country). It was literally some of the best customer service I’ve received.
Go here for classes and gifts — be aware their hours are limited to Thursday — Sunday, but that they are willing to accommodate!

My fiancé took me here for a private workshop to make custom terrariums. Initially I had a vision for a certain terrarium (a couple dancing in the forest), but the instructor said that he didn’t receive any advance notice and didn’t have the figurines available. So I will subtract a star there — it would have been nice to see my vision come to fruition!
Our instructor (not the owners, who usually run these private sessions) was AWESOME. We randomly got some free beer (PLUS PLUS PLUS) and he was incredibly patient with us as we talked through different ideas. My biggest suggestion would be to have a catalog of figurines or an easier way to look through all the possibilities. If you come in not having a vision of what you want, it can be a little overwhelming taking in all the scenarios you could make.
***What’s great about the private lesson is that you can pick from almost any of the amazing glass bottles. The cost of the lesson is less expensive than buying a pre-​made terrarium AND you can make EXACTLY what you want.***

i should begin by saying that i love plants, dream of them, want them in my apartment but, do not always have the best luck with them. i even killed an air plant, whose primary source of sustenance is AIR.
that being said — i met one of the owners of twig years ago as they were opening their gowanus location. she was friendly, and open and made me feel confident about my aspiring plant dreams. just this summer i finally got to the shop, and let me just say its like a magical garden of discovery and wonder.
they sell terrariums, air plants, small plants and cool containers to house plants. it’s really a beautiful space. i have purchased a few air plants, and some smaller house plants, which at 5 $ each are really a steal. happy to report months later, all plants from twig are alive and well.
they also have great customer service — friendly and knowledgeable, my questions (even dumb ones) were answered clearly and helpfully. they even threw some drainage stones in with my purchase of a container for a very unhappy plant i’ve had for a while that needed a new home. i’ve never taken a class, but probably will eventually, and bought a terrarium as a wedding gift — the couple was charmed and impressed.
twig is my new one stop shop for most new plant needs — the plants are happy and healthy and i’d rather give my business to a local shop than a large corporate greenhouse like home depot with unhappy bug-​ridden houseplants. three cheers for twig and bringing some life to gowanus!

I just want to say that while the product I received was satisfactory and as described, I was horrified by the person that delivered the product. I have no idea whether Twig uses their own delivery people or a courier service, but I just know that I was repeatedly sexually harassed by the person who delivered it within the 3 minute interaction I had with him. I didn’t have the wherewithal to ask him who he worked for after being in the awkward position of being explicitly told that he was turned on by me and by people like me. I was luckily at work with other people while this happened, but if this person came to my home, I would have been afraid. I’m sorry that my experience was tainted by this interaction, but I feel like the whole customer experience should be accounted for.

Recently went to a group class taught by co-​owner Michelle, who is awesome! She was attentive and informative towards everyone questions. Although they’re on the pricier side, I feel it was worth the experience. Great for all ages, could even make a great date night.
The space is enchanting and fun to wander around in. Who ever decorated the shop needs to come give me a hand with my drab living room.
Be sure to check out the backyard space, love the greenery and use of re-​purposed furniture. It’s not easy making a cinder block and a plank of wood look like that.

Twig was a fun space to walk and browse last Christmas. I picked up a funky metal branch jewelry rack as a gift for a good price. The terrarariums are pricy for what they are but a business needs to cover it’s overhead and expenses and pull a profit.
Is a can of PBR really worth $ 5, anywhere? But folks don’t complain about that.
When I skimmed through the reviews (most of them hidden), it seemed to me there were shills with only one or two reviews on both sides of fence which is interesting. Why would such a small biz warrant such effort/​attention? Park Slope intrigue at its finest!

The space is beautiful and the service seemed fine it’s the prices that are way out of whack. Whether you’re coming here for a terrarium class, to buy a pre-​made terrarium, or to get stuff to make your own the prices are definitely a rip off despite the high quality.
First of all, it might be a fun event or a date to take a class here but if you’re doing it strictly for education purposes, do yourself a favor and just watch a short video or two online, it’s really not that hard or complicated. Actually the woman from Twig has a comprehensive slideshow of the process here (
). If you don’t want to check it out, I’ll save you the time and just tell you how it’s done. All you need is a glass enclosure, it can be fully enclosed or have an opening, as long as the opening isn’t at the top and isn’t too large. This allows the moisture to stay in the micro climate and keeps the temperature a little more constant. You fill the bottom inch or so with rocks/​pebbles (for drainage) followed by a layer (or you can mix it in with the pebbles) of activated charcoal/​carbon (to keep everything fresh and smelling good). On top of that you add 2 – 3 inches of potting soil (any should do). At this point you can get creative. You choose plant (s) that thrive in a low light, high humidity environment (as you won’t have this sitting in direct or constant daylight) that have stunted growth (so you don’t have to keep pruning anything). Moss, ferns, and those type of plants are perfect but I’ve been told that moss doesn’t play well with others so if you choose moss your terrarium should only consist of varieties of moss. If you want to be whimsical, add a figure or two to make it like seem like a forest environment for little people. Lastly, mist the plants with a spray bottle, put the cover on (if applicable) and the plants will feed themselves for years and years with no (or very little) maintenance. There you have it, I just saved you about $ 40 or so, you’re welcome. So next time you see me out, feel free to buy me a couple drinks.
If you’re coming here to make your own they have an entire wall of glass containers of all shapes and sizes. The prices of these are extraordinary. It’s quite possible they’re local and/​or unique but even so the prices were higher than what I was expecting. Go on Amazon and you can find really nice glass encloses for $ 5 – 70 depending on the shape and size. I was expecting to see a lot of plants and moss options here and maybe they had them in a different room as I didn’t see anywhere where you could browse and buy your own plants alone except for a small DIY kit by the register that included some moss. Also, almost all of their terrariums have little figures in them but they didn’t have a selection of those to choose from.
Lastly, if you’re coming here to buy a terrarium, that’s when the mark ups really begin, you’re talking well over $ 100 for a medium sized one. Just take the time and make one yourself, you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment and if you’re buying it as a gift, your loved one will love it even more. Glass will cost you maybe $ 8 – 25, a little figure (which you can buy from any hobby shop that sells stuff for train sets) will be about $ 5, you can find your own moss and pebbles, and charcoal will be about $ 5. I made two large terrariums that looked just as good as the ones at Twig with figures for a total of $ 20 (that’s $ 10 a piece!)
Come here if you want a fun and unique date/​party idea or if you don’t want to be bothered to make your own but just know you’ll be paying a premium.

I got a gift certificate for a group workshop at Twig. In an hour, I built my own terrarium. The instructor (also owner) made it fun, informative, and made sure none of us left with an ugly terrarium. The kit came with all of the terrarium implements (including a figurine) and detailed care instructions.
The store itself is beautiful. It reminds me of a fairy kingdom. You can take a workshop like I did, or do a private class, or have them build one for you. They also sell air plants.
Note: you do need to make a reservation before taking a class and it can be a bit of a challenge to get a hold of them.

For my birthday gift, my friend wanted us to make terariums together! Since she was coming from Chicago, she googled places to do so and found Twig. However, when she called about coming in to make one together, she found out that you had to make an appointment to attend a workshop. So we decided to just come to the store and check it out first.
The concept of the store is great and they mostly just sell pre-​made terrariums there. However, they are incredibly overpriced for the reality of how much they cost. We ended up buying a DIY kit that included the different types of moss and rocks (but no jar) for $ 30 since it gave us enough to make 2 – 3 terrariums on our own (and we get to hunt for cute jars!). But even paying $ 30 for that stuff seems a bit much. The terrariums at the store were selling them up to $ 150!
So, if you’re crafty and up for taking a little time and effort to hunt down your own cheap moss, pick up rocks on the sidewalk, get a cute jar from a thrift store — you can easily make your own terrarium for $ 5 or so.
On the more positive side, the guy we talked to at the back of the store was super friendly and helpful. And they sell a variety of jars in the back — anything from lightbulb shaped to a gumball machine! The other two people working there by the front didn’t seem that excited to talk to us, however.
PROS: great concept, cute store
CONS: pricey!

I have five emails confirming the delivery and the order. They sure did charge me fast enough
