The Bottle Shoppe

A quaint little wine and liquor shop on Graham Ave close to the subway. Small but they have a good selection and the place is packed from floor to ceiling so if you can’t find something here, maybe you’re just too picky.
Try out the Leo Malbec that’s right by the front door, it’s named after the family’s dog and part of the proceeds go to the local animal shelter.
During the recent snowstorm these guys stayed open late and the whole family bunkered up in the upstairs office — now that’s dedication.

Super friendly and helpful staff. Have had some great wines from here. Would thoroughly recommend.

Great selection for a small wine shop. Several interesting blends and wineries that I had never seen before, all at the correct market value (rare for NYC). I took home a nice Montepulciano from the bargain bin. I like that they are open until 11pm, accept American Express, and have really chill and helpful staff. My only complaint is that there aren’t price tags on anything-​you literally have to ask how much each bottle is. Awkward.

Nice people. Really crappy wine selection but if your looking for spirits, this is the place to go. Again, really nice staff.

I don’t have a single complaint about this wine shop. The staff is friendly, the prices are reasonable, and the selection is good (at least for a non-​connoisseur/​mere enthusiast like myself). Located right off the L stop, so perfect for that after-​work stop or pre-​party pick-​up.

The selection seemed good enough, but why aren’t there prices visible? Super annoying to turn every single bottle around. Unfortunately, I sort of have to navigate wine stores by price… have a feeling I’m not the only one. I’ve never seen this before.

Stopped in here last weekend on the way to a party in the neighborhood. Needed to pickup some wine and this turned out to be right along the way.
Gabbed a bottle of red and another of white, and went to the counter to pay. Then this friendly guy offered me tastings of all the stuff I was buying. Hey why not warmup for the night a bit early!

This is a perfectly acceptable wine shop. I love that it is right off the L, and en route home. It is nice that they have a decent selection of whites in the fridge in the rear, and the selection is reasonably priced for a mid-​week purchase. They don’t have a huge amount of stock, but I always find something I like and I’m happy that they don’t have tons of large, commercial, brands. I rarely ask for help from staff when picking out wine here, but the couple of times when I have asked I’ve been happy with the suggestions. I think when asking for help/​suggestions you need to give as much info as possible: what are you eating, what’s your price range, if appropriate do you like spicy, dry, sweet, etc.

This bottle shop is close to the subway and the selection is just fine. The staff is friendly, but don’t have any expectations of them being super knowledgeable. For example, last night I stopped in to get a bottle of white. While I was there I remembered the mint in my fridge and thought making cocktails would be fun. I asked the dude there what hard alcohol goes best with mint. He was stumped for an answer.

3.5 stars, my wine store down the street. I come here at least few times a week. It’s a neighborhood wine store for me. I don’t think they have a lot of sections. but I did find my favorite wine here and just stick with that ever since.
The staff was friendly and help, and price is about average. it’s an easy way/​place for me to pick up a wine on my way back home.

All in all I like this place. It might have to do with the convenience, but it might be because they stock wines from good importers. I will say that I am a bit partisan with my wine tastes, only drinking French reds, but they do have a small, but impressive selection. As with most wine shop/​liquor stores the staff isn’t always very knowledgeable. They seem to have more breadth than depth of knowledge, but that is kind of to be expected, I reckon. The prices here I find a bit offensive, but when it is one of the only places you can find something uniquely good you don’t have much of a choice and I think they know that.
Being that the prices are on the high side here I would be more inclined to buy cases if they offered more than the standard wine shop 15% discount.

Great selection of mini bottles of some of the boutique stuff (St. Germain), not much of a wine drinker but the selection looked decent and the place was clean. Didn’t interact with the staff much but from the sound of everyone else on Unilocal they aren’t great. I’ll reserve my judgement on that until I have a judgement on that.

Was pretty shocked when I discovered the rude and snotty woman behind the counter mentioned to me that she had actually owned the place. Wouldn’t recommend unless you feel comfortable over-​paying for a decent bottle & getting a bad attitude.

i am a very loyal BQE wines & liquors customer. i will always go there for great prices, fabulous service, and an unrivaled selection.

HOWEVER, this place is great because they DELIVER WINE TO YOU IF YOU SPEND $ 25. holy moly. and they do this until 11pm on fridays & saturdays.
WHAT A CONCEPT!

My original review was 3 stars and this:
The staff isn’t well educated on the stock, the wines are a bit higher than they should be, BUT the selection is pretty stellar — so you can feel pretty good about grabbing a random bottle.
I’ve taken off a star because the last time I went in, I made an offhand comment to my girlfriend about Vinho Verde being portuguese for «cheap, barely drinkable, table wine meant for getting trashed on a weekend afternoon» as we were checking out. The clerk then tried to tell me that they had a really good one… from spain. And that it meant green wine, «like the grapes».
We politely nodded, and left.
On the way home, i laughingly explained to my girlfriend that Vinho Verde is a DOC appelation — that is that only wines from a certain region in portugal may be labeled as vinho verde by law. And that it does mean «green wine», but because it is ‘young’ — it’s quickly fermented, not aged, and still very much tastes like grapes. In fact, it often tastes like grape juice with vodka mixed in.
It’s fine if the staff doesn’t know much, but they shouldn’t act like such.

I feel pretty lucky having such a nice wine store right in my hood. It looks small, but has a surprisingly extensive selection– including a pretty good organic section. The prices are a bit inflated (there’s a big liquor store right on meeker up the street, which sells some of the same wines for $ 3 less, average), but you can’t beat the cozy atmosphere of the store and the location.
