My main dish didn’t have much flavor, but the ingredients were high quality and the rice and nan were topnotch. Normally I would have given it 4 stars, but since spice is so important to Indian food, I think it only deserves 3. I’d definitely recommend this place, though make sure there’s salt around in case your food is as bland as mine was.

Incredibly fresh and hands down the best Indian delivery around. Plan ahead. They can be a bit slow, but it’s absolutely worth it.

Flying into LaGuardia, NY from Orlando, FL, apparently the outside temperature dropped 20 degrees in NY! So to warm up my ATL guy & I, our hosts suggested Indian food nearby their home! We ordered Chicken KorMa, Lamb Vindaloo, Chicken Madras, Garlic Naan, and mango lassis. Delicious! What I really liked about this establishment is even though we were coming in 30 minutes before closing time, the person who answered our inquiring phonecall said to come on it! We stayed 30 minutes passed closing time, and the service did not fail. The chef even came out to make sure everything tasted delicious… and it certainly did!

This place really deserves more than 2 stars. Ate in twice, both times service was attentive and considerate. Food was very good, priced right, and filling. If you’ve got an Indian food craving and your in the neighborhood, this place is great.

I don’t really get some of the reviews on here with people going to eat curry and expecting some fine dining experience. I’m British and have spent more than my fair share of time in curry houses, and on balance Taj Mahal is a pretty decent place. The food is OK… not as good as, say, Brick Lane in the city, but it’s definitely not bad. I think they may have different chefs working on different nights because I do see a variation in the quality of my Vindaloo and in the samosas/naan/poori etc from time to time. Williamsburg did have 2 curry places for a while — there was one on Bedford Ave where the Subway now is. Now that place sucked. Taj Mahal is not a place I’d want to go and sit down for dinner, but it’s fine for delivery.

This actually happened a few weeks ago, I had been meaning to write this up and only just got to it. BTW — We finally did get our correct order and it was fairly bland and bathed in ghee. WHYOHWHY can’t we get some excellent Indian food in the Greenpoint/Williamsburg area? We were really excited as only recently a group of new Indian restaurants have appeared. We love Indian food and it has taken so long for this area to get more than the mediocre place on N 6th. We thought we would give this new place a try and placed our order. The person who took our order said it would be 40 to 45 mins. Totally fine and understand as it was a Friday night. One hour later we called to check in and she said it would be there soon as the delivery guy just left. He was at our place within 15 minutes. They got one of the dishes wrong, it was a chicken dish instead of the sag paneer we ordered. Both of us were vegetarian so we called to let them know. They said they would send the sag paneer over and apologized, but it’s been an hour since we called an nothing. Don’t think we will order from them again.

This place used to be really good, and on some days, if you physically GO, it is still decent. Things to note — 1. your food will be served in a pool of grease. 2. you will feel sick inside shortly after eating unless you drink hot tea or soup with your meal. Every time i order delivery, the time gets longer and longer, and the quality of the food gets worse and worse. Last time it took TWOHOURS and the food was damn near inedible. They made me pay full price for it, and offered no explanation. Needless to say, this place is now dead to me, and was so bad that i am writing my first restaurant review despite the mounting pile of work beside me. I LOVE Indian food, WHYYYYY does it have to be like this, Mamtaj/Taj Mahal???

I stopped in here on my way home after a long run in the winter. The guy could tell I was cold so he brought me a spiced tea on the house while I waited for my food. It was a very nice gesture and boy did it hit the spot. I’ve only been here once and only for take out but it was flavorful food and it’s one of the only Indian restaurants in the area.

I suffered through Taj Mahal’s bad attitude way too many times just because there was no other option. But now there is! It’s called Curry Heaven — get that instead. Taj Mahal suckssssssss, and I’m so glad there’s now a(local) Indian place I like.

Inexcusably bad. Key adjectives: dry, flavorless, bland, Westernized, uninspired, lukewarm. Nothing tasty about this place. A true, true disgrace.

I find the food comforting every now and then, when I’m hard up for some aloo gobi or saag paneer. I guess the real tragedy is that there’s no alternative anywhere near here. Under spiced and over priced, a disappointing combo for Indian food.

Been waiting for this place to close for years in hopes someone new will open what is ATLEAST a half way decent indian joint. This is the worst indian food you will ever have. It’s also the gift that keeps on giving, if you catch my drift. I honestly don’t know why they haven’t shut for good. Don’t bother looking for another Indian place in Williamsburg/Greenpoint either, because there isn’t one. Just use the L to get to the East Village and go to ANY of the cheap joints on E6th Street. They are ALL leaps and bounds above Taj Mahal.

taj, how i used to love you at least 2 times a week. your spicy lamb vindaloo curry hitting my palate, exploding with creamy spicy goodness. your soft, fluffy naan. so good. oh, how i remember the times when the chef would prepare a special meal special for our table. those were great times. but then, things changed. you’re different now. it’s like, you don’t care anymore. you switch owners on me. you fire your cooks and send my favorite waiter back to india. i have tried again and again to make this work, but you make no effort. i just can’t do this anymore. sigh.

Awful, simply awful. There are not really any other Indian options in Williamsburg so I was excited to try this place. I ate here twice and was disappointed and ashamed of myself for coming back! The first time I ordered a lamb curry, which was just okay. The next time I ordered biryani, raita, and a chicken curry. Everything was awful — not even worth keeping the leftovers. As an Indian person who knows how to cook good Indian food — I can say none of it was very authentic either. Please don’t judge Indian food by this experience! Someone please open a good Indian place in Williamsburg!

Williamsburg has been begging for good Indian, and we’re still begging. They seem to go out of their way to combine slow apathetic service, with oily tasteless food, with slightly higher prices than similar restaurants in the village. I have no idea why I went twice, maybe I figured I hit a bad night. Nope!

The restaurant’s interior is cool and sleek with stylish modern furniture and clever soft lighting. What gave it away as an Indian were the little pink carnations and the super friendly welcome from a very hospitable manager. We ordered the house wine. We had to ask for the wine bucket but then happily settled into looking at the menu and that is when we realised it wasn’t trying to be anything but a good classic Indian restaurant. All the usual dishes were represented and so we set about trying some of the suggested recommended items like the Garlic Murg(Chicken) or Jheenga Gulmohar(King Prawns marinated in saffron, mustard, ginger and garlic paste). These were new to me, but we also ordered some favourites like Tarka Daal and Peshwari Naan. Waiting for the food, waiting for our order and waiting for our wine was surprising and that’s when I noticed that these guys do a killer take out business too. Unfortunately, it did take away(excuse the pun) from the service in the restaurant. At least when the food arrived it was really fantastic and everything it should have been. Delicious flavours, strong spices and good portions gave us little to find fault with. Later chatting to the owner, we were pleased to find out that there are plans to deal with the success of both operations and size up the provision for both types of service. This for me is good news for the locals because now they have a great take away and a great local restaurant with very reasonable prices. Taj Mahal definitely has the makings of a perfect modern classic Indian restaurant.

This was my standard place to go when I was hankering for some Indian food. The food is good, and the service is friendly and fast. I really like the appetizer sampler they have here — good for sharing among two or three people! The chicken tikka masala is my favorite entrée. There is also a good selection of beers. I am not totally«blown away» by the food, but it is good and reliable! The atmosphere pretends to be classier than it is – really, you can just come in off the street and chow down.

The food is decent, but has a tendency to result in horrible gastro-intestinal problems, the least of which is usually discomfort. If it’s any indication, my copy of the delivery menu has«BADSICKYUCK» written across it in big letters as a warning.
