Supreme Court of New York, Appellate Division 2nd Department

It’s the 2^nd department courthouse. I’m not sure you can be a fan of the courthouse unless you’re a criminal, liked the verdict you got or work there. This is where you will be going if you get admitted to be an attorney in NY & live in Queens, Brooklyn or Long Island. You also go here to get disbarred & to motion in from another area, as I learned last week when my friend who’s admitted (and lives) elsewhere was getting sworn into NY. This is also where you go if you don’t like the decision you got in the Supreme Court of Queens, Brooklyn or those 2 counties in Long Island.
This courthouse is tucked away in the neighborhood of Brooklyn Heights (most famously known as where «The Cosby Show» took place). Getting here is fairly easy if you can stand the cold wind that will blow as you’re walking (at least in the winter). Security here is kind enough to give directions and answer questions when needed. Screening isn’t too bad; there’s no separate line for attorneys with court ID and I’ve never seen it crowded here. The courtroom where the swearing in takes place is very nice & judicial, pretty much what you’d expect from a courtroom.
However, I do see the mark of sexism here since they hide the ladies room while the men’s room is much easier to find. I remember getting sworn in here & commenting on that. Based on my most recent visit, things haven’t changed but at least I now know where the ladies room is. It’s definitely clean, elegant and a place where you’d better be wearing your nice clothing. Show respect when you come here; this place has history.
Finally, I did see protestors outside the building after my swearing in so if you happen to be there when a controversial case is taking place you may see a few yourself.
