Studio Maya

I’ve been coming here for a while and I’ve really enjoyed it so far. Started coming here using a groupon and have continued on with the studio. I mainly come from for the Zumba classes which are on Saturdays and Tuesdays. The instructors are really good. You have fun and get a good workout at the same time. I’ve also done the Bosu classes in Saturdays which are intense. You will be drenched by the end but it is a good workout. Everyone at the studio is really nice.

The Brooklyn Booty class was no joke. And there were no laughs. Ouch. My poor parts.
I just started coming here and so far, so great. In addition to good classes, I love that they supply the mats and all of the props. Which means that I can go directly from work without carrying my whole life around all day.
The Maya method classes are very specific and take some getting used to, so I don’t know how I’ll ultimately feel about those, but overall I think that the studio is an cool, low-​key place to get some fitness done.

I bought a Groupon for 10 classes at Studio Maya and had a great time there. Some of the classes I took were: Arms Technique, Ageless Body Techniques and Zumba. The strength training classes were great. The exercises are simple but after one session, you could really feel your muscles working! The class I loved the best was Zumba. The instructor was super energetic and fun to follow. It was by far the hardest class I took there but it was still amazing. I stopped going because of my work schedule but would love to go back and drop in for Zumba!

I bought the 3 month unlimited Groupon that is available now (April 28, 2015) because of how close this pilates studio is off the Bergen St stop. I attended my first class with Maya last night, the Ageless Core/​Glutes class, and I’m so thrilled I did. There is a changing room, like a ballet studio has, once you get through the door (kept locked, so knock). There are many jugs of water and glass bottles or cups for you to use, and walking in to the studio feels almost like walking in to a spa: there are stacks of fresh towels (grab a big one for neck support), fresh smelling mats, cables, ketel bells, weights, and the blue bubbles for ab work.
In this class I took, Maya began by asking everyone in the room their name and if they had back/​body pain. A few did, and she made sure to give them customized instructions. She explained very well how this type of pilates (for this class, I’m not sure for the overall practice) is deceptively easy, because the real work of it is getting to relax the muscles that normally work (thighs, upper abs) and focusing specifically on the muscles that generally take it easy. So, like most pilates, the moves are tight and small, and get harder with time as you get better at learning how to activate these unused muscles. A special attention was paid to glutes and lower abs, which all the women in the class (more than 25, probably, though comfortably) appreciated. Everything is at your own pace, and she is an excellent teacher.
At the end of the class she handed us small washcloths that had been sprayed fully in a natural smelling cleanser, to wipe down our mats and tools, which I appreciate knowing as I come through the next time. Tonight is «Brooklyn Booty» and though my butt is sore from yesterday’s glute workout, I can’t wait. Also excited to try the adult ballet class, just have to get my butt out of bed at 8 am on a Saturday.
My only wish was that there are more early classes (like 7 – 8 before work) on the nights that I have to go elsewhere after work — but that’s hardly Studio Maya’s fault. They run a very inclusive and welcoming studio and I’m so glad I bought that groupon!

The studio offers a relaxing ambiance and provides the perfect detox to a stressful day. The lighting is low, the walls are exposed brick, and the air smells mildly of incense.
That being said, the workouts did not work well for me. I went to Studio Maya regularly for a month after I purchased a Groupon package. The exercises are very low-​intensity, and I found that I struggled to get back to my more strenuous routine (which includes a mix of running and boot camp classes) after my package expired. In other words, I felt that like I was in better shape before coming here. Of the classes I took (Zumba, Hourglass, Arms, Ballet Booty, Abs/​Core), I found that only the Saturday Abs/​Core class really made me break a sweat.
In short, if you’re looking for an athletic challenge, don’t come to Studio Maya. It’s more meditation room than workout studio.

I definitely recommend the abs/​butt class. Your abs will be in pain for days after it (and sneezing will feel like you got stabbed in the stomach) but I noticed a difference after just two classes!

I just had my first class yesterday and I am truly impressed. This is probably one of the best fitness classes I’ve ever taken. The environment is really relaxing and visually stunning.
The workouts are challenging but overall I found everything to be pretty easy to follow with a little tweaking from Maya. The class was really full but she still managed to get around to everyone and give them personal encouragement and gentle corrections on proper form. She also managed to remember everyone’s names (no idea how). Can’t wait for my next class!

I went to this studio with a groupon. I took mostly the hour glass class and I was pleasantly surprised. Nothing to high impact. The instructor was very attentive to class goers and I left feeling refreshed. I will continue taking classes here.

I just finished my 5 Groupon classes and I’m definitely considering getting a 10-​pack to continue at Studio Maya. I’ve done various yoga, pilates and barre classes before, and Maya’s technique is definitely unique and effective. Even going to 4 classes no more than once a week, I feel the effect, so I’m sure going more frequently would lead to great results.
A couple tips I wanted to share here:
–When Maya says that as you go to more of her classes, you start to work harder & harder, she’s not kidding. Also, it can take up to three classes to feel like you’re doing the movements right.
–The «ballet barre» class they offer is not akin to Bar Method or any other type of barre fitness class — it’s straight up ballet. I guess I skipped reading the description the first time I went. It was kind of a funny surprise, and definitely fun to try ballet for the first time in years, but not the workout I was looking for.

new studio in a building being renovated. you have to walk through a little bit of construction inside. the studio is really just a studio. they have one bathroom with one shower and a curtain up that turns a space in to a locker room/​changing area. there are 2 mirrors, which makes a little difficult for zumba. the teacher is great though and the place is clean. they have water and towels and it smells clean. i wish they had a wall of mirrors. other than that, i can deal with the open changing space. bethina flores is AMAZING. love the music and routine she has for the zumba class.

I first learned about this business through Groupon and Amazon where they advertised a group of classes to newcomers. I quickly signed up for the unlimited month of classes for $ 40. I didn’t even step one foot in the door and I was already impressed by their customer service. As a courtesy, my coupon was extended though it had expired before I even had a chance to use it. I needed help navigating the site to register for the classes, which they were more than happy to do via email within 48 hrs. On my first day, I met the owner, Maya who was very friendly and welcomed me into her space. I like the location, because it reminds me a lot of about the DUMBO area. It’s very artistic in a sense with the creativity that occurs on the ground floor in the different studios.
The space is pretty simple. There are bare white walls, a wooden floor for the class itself, the changing/​lockerless area to place your belongings, one bathroom, and a storage area for the minimal gym equipment. No distractions, just the class itself. I’ve been back since for Ballet Barre and Intensive Core. The instructors teach small classes which usually start with introductions. It’s different in comparison to the gym, and that’s why I love it. You’re there to focus on the routines and meet new people with the same drive — to get fit and burn those calories.

A great studio. Clean, warm inviting space. I really enjoyed my ab workout.

I’ve been working out with Maya for over a year. I am so happy I found her. In the past, I found exercise that was either «fun, til I got hurt,» or else therapeutic classes like Feldenkrais which made me feel good, but not fit.
At Maya’s you feel yourself getting stronger. And you can make the classes as difficult or easy as you like — she is great at showing alternatives when people have injuries, or when they are ready to kick it up a notch. The ballet barre class is a wonderful place to tone your body AND dance, and blessedly free of all the superficial B.S. that drove me away from ballet years ago. Personal training sessions with Maya really get to the heart of your issues, answer questions, reveal mysteries, and chill you out with things like the magical «chi machine.»
I don’t quite know how Maya maintains the high level of alertness to every class member’s needs — she does often mention drinking lots of chai :) — but it is noticeable and makes Studio Maya rise head and shoulders above the other fitness venues I have tried (including and especially, working out by myself at home). If you stick with her method, you will notice positive changes in your body… and Maya will notice and congratulate you too.

So far I am not a fan, I have called this company, at least four times, over the past 3 days, asking them to authorize my groupon and I still do not have access to the classes. In addition, I have contacted the ONE person who is able to grant me permission to the classes via email. I am anxious to try these classes and I hope that my updated review will have nothing but pleasant things to say about the staff and the classes but I also hope that the owner reads this review and refine the process for groupon customers.

Maya is an outstanding instructor and pays attention to the details — from eyeing your releve up close to playfully recalling that you hate that darned Bosu! to making sure you’ve water by your side (alkaline-​demineralized-​reverse-​osmosis-​blahblahsp­ecial water, at that). The studio is enormous, albeit a little drafty in the winter. The classes are generally slow but intense: your core will be tight and strong in a deeeeeeep way. Also deeeeeeeeply sore, but there ain’t no such thing as a free lunch, am I right?
And at the cost of sounding super creepy, she has an AMAZING BODY (not just for her age, but, like, in general). So like, it works.

What a treasure this place is. After only two classes I’m feeling Maya’s techniques and unique approach to muscle toning and strengthening. The studio is extremely clean and nicely appointed and wonderfully friendly. I grabbed the groupon deal because the studio is close to my apartment but it’s worth traveling for at full price.

First off, Studio Maya is physically, it itself, a refuge. Instantly you walk in and it’s calm. It’s clean spareness brings me into the present regardless of how hectic my life outside has been.
There are many more services that are provided, and much of it for women, but as a man I have only taken the Tuesday night men’s class: the instructor is positive and encouraging, yet not flakey and you get a satisfying workout – I’d love to see more options during the week for this class…
