Smith & Vine

Smith and Vine was recommended to us by a bartender friend. It’s a small but roomy liquor store that has a nice selection of wines, common liquors, and some rarer items. The staff is friendly and quirky. We particularly liked the gal behind the counter who thanked us for buying several odd and incongruous liquors. She then went on to discuss with us the joys of yellow vs green chartreuses/​chartreusi? In either case, it was a fun discussion and S&V is a fine place to hit when you are looking for booze.

Such a helpful staff. Such an amazing selection. And the «cheap table» in the middle always has top-​notch reds and whites. Everybody knows their stuff here but they’re not snobby about it, and I feel like they have tastings almost every time I’m in! Just wanted to spread the word because these cats are their own pajamas… wait… these bees are their own knees? Aw, forget it. Thanks, Smith and Vine!

Finding a good wine store in an overly gentrified white Brooklyn neighborhood: mission impossible? probably… Smith and wine looks like it’s twin brother Stinky which is without even looking run by the same people. So indeed: same target audience here: white successful families and same line of employees: white aspiring successful youngster ! the selection and decoration match with the afford mentioned qualities… meaning yes you’ll find a great bottle but it won’t be from the formatted recommendation and well most usual good picks will clock around 5 to 8 dollars more than any of the best wine store in Manhattan… that’s a deal breaker ! unless you just don’t care about over spending and have a stroller to push

I have been here a few times and it’s always failed to impress. The staff is nice but rarely offers to help unless I specifically ask for it. I’ve had so many bad suggestions at this point that I wonder if they just don’t have good selections or if the staff knows nothing about wine. My gut, the latter… but not 100 percent sure. Need to find a better wine store in Carroll gardens if it exists. This one just doesn’t cut it for me.

I love wine and spirits. When I look or a wine shop, I want knowledgable employees and when I look for a liquor store, I want local and I want variety. I don’t want Bacardi, I don’t want stoli. Give me something fun, unique and delicious over heavily marketed crap spirits that are shoved down our throats from corporations who could care less about small batch or quality for that matter. Either way, everything I want and everything you should want is here. Oh, and ask for Courtney. She’s hot and awesome and she knows her stuff. –Julia

Worst customer service ever. Two women at the register rambling on about the wine industry. Can’t be bothered to look up as I make my purchase or tell me how much they are charging me as they swipe my card through. My fault for even bothering to shop on Smith street though. Save your money folks and go to Wright & Goebel on Flatbush.

You know when there’s two cashiers, and they are both talking to each other while you’re making a purchase? Yeah, that’s customer service at this place. Sorry to interrupt your riveting conversation while I buy my tepid white wine from your tiny fridge. Seems like this place only thrives because there are so few options around. Thankfully in my hood, we have plenty of better options.

This is almost the ideal local wineshop.
Smith & Vine is cozy, mostly affordable, plays a nice rotation of funky music, and although the selection is not comprehensive, it’s well-​curated with a lot of good options (including locally produced stuff like Due North rum, a favorite of mine). For the most part, the staff is friendly and ready with recommendations, even if it is just for the lunch they just ordered from Cobble Grill.
It’s run by the same fine folk as Stinky Brooklyn up the street, and I’ll gladly offer them my business whenever I’m in need.

You could not ask for a better neighborhood wine shop than S&V, and that is saying a lot in a neighborhood with so many great wine shops! But S&V definitely stands out, by virtue of their unique offerings, incredibly friendly and helpful service (and advice), and of course, treats for canine customers (ok, so our dog made us write that)

We like wine, and we like this shop, enough to make sure to stop by to shop here each time we come up to Brooklyn to visit. We’ve landed on some nice finds, and new ones, too, thanks to the conversations we’ve had with the staff.

Favorite wine shop in the area. Their discount section is divine. I just wish their mid-​shelf liquour wasn’t so over-​priced.

I love the staff. They have gotten to know us and what we like, so they will often make recommendations as soon as we walk in. They have also starting stocking things we request. Love the $ 12 and under table.
Bring your dog and get a treat.

The $ 12 and under wine table is a life-​saver. I like an awesome, expensive wine when I’m fancy dining, but my daily drinking needs to be on the low-​cost. No use drinking a gallon of $ 50 wine on a Thursday night or Sunday afternoon or Wednesday morning. Great overall selection.
The delivery service is not great, but I think of S&V as a «duck-​in» spot for a quick bottle.

Wonderful little wine shop in one of my favorite neighborhoods in the city, from the same people who own Stinky Brooklyn.
The décor is simple, welcoming, and warm: lots of wine bottles everywhere, a small barrel on display, and a small counter for wine tasting.
I like this place in particular for a white Loire wine that I love: Domaine du Salvard Cheverny from 2008. 80% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Chardonnay. If you like Sancerre, you will love this one: crisp and mineral, with a very long, grassy, finish. At $ 15 per bottle, it’s a very sweet deal.
They have, however, an amazing selection of single malt Scotch whisky, including rarities like Springbank, Ardbeg, and Glenrothes.
Last time I came here I was looking for a Crucian rum, but they didn’t have any. I ended up buying a Gruet brut blanc de noirs[1]: a Pinot Noir sparkling wine from New Mexico. This bubbly wine has a very rich, salmon color, and is slightly more fruity than a sparkling wine made from Chardonnay. Great to accompany a dessert at the end of a meal.

[1] Although excellent, I would not recommend this wine to end a romantic dinner, if you have hopes of scoring. Granted: we had a few glasses of Cheverny during dinner, but a glass and a half of Gruet was enough for my gf to pass out on the couch almost immediately…

I still haven’t quite yet figured out the organization system of their featured wines. Perhaps this is due to my wine ignorance. I do like the fact that above each wine bottle there is a little tag with a brief description of the wine. And, even after that, if one still looks clueless, the staff are willing to help (definitely not pressure-​y).
Oh, and did I mention the $ 12 and under table? I snagged two bottles from it the other day.
