These guys are rad. I got my hands on a flawless 1980 Puch Maxi-​Luxe through a distant family member, took the carb apart a million times trying to clean out gunk, and just got sick of tinkering with it myself. Brought it to these guys, they flushed the tank over and over and over and over and then some more. They probably did a lot of other stuff, too. Bottom line is they are awesome and the moped now runs great. It’s also a fantastic little shop with locks and two stroke oil and helmets and other sweet mopeds for sale.

I bought my first moped here last year and I can safely say that Second Stroke is THE place in NYC to get the perfect vehicle for NYC. Besides mopeds, the shop offers helmets, waterproof covers, kryptonite chains (which I HIGHLY recommend, saved my bike from a thief who had to have been trying to saw off the chain for at least a week when I was out of town) and other accessories. Ari (not me, the Ari who owns the shop) and Pete are super helpful and friendly. As a first time rider and without the slightest clue as to how to change a spark plug I thought it would be intimidating walking into a garage full of moped fanatics, but I was very happy to find a place that was receptive and open to new riders; never condescending in their answers to what tasted like really stupid questions when they came out of my mouth. I ran into some problems with my bike last summer about 5 months after I purchased it (blown tube, exhaust issue) and they had my bike purring like new 2 days later. I thought what they charged for the necessary repairs was very reasonable. I stored my bike in their garage over the harsh winter for only 50 dollars per month where it was safe from the elements and would-​be thieves. Going in this afternoon to pick it up after Pete put some new modifications on it — pumped that the weather is finally turning, I’ll be riding everyday and I’ll sleep soundly at night knowing Second Stroke will always be there for my moped related needs.

The itch has been scratched. I work in the same building as one of the owners. He scratches my itches. I like mopeds.

Looks like someone at Ego Stroke’s got their thrift shop vintage underwear in a bunch. The moped jockey did not give me the «run down», as you stated in your smug response. He did not mention any of the reasons that you listed. It would have been way more professional, if he even mentioned one of those reasons.
The comment you made about motorized bicycles being «dangerous» was a below the belt, cheap shot. It’s misleading to bring up spokes being ripped out from hubs. The builders I know always use thicker spokes for motorized bikes. Sure, some motorized bicycles are built cheaper than others, just like mopeds.
You can carry all the electric bikes that you want, just don’t be an asshole to the next person that stops by with a gas powered motorized bicycle.

NYC is in legal limbo when it comes to motor assisted bikes but if you think this will stop these bikes from gaining in popularity, you are delusional.

Yes I did mention that your employee was passive aggressive. It’s true that I wrote a Unilocal review but that’s after I called him an asshole, to his face. Nothing passive aggressive about that.
You continue to disrespect the forefather of the moped, the motorized bicycle but deep down inside, you know they are way cooler than any moped you’ve ever hunched over. I submit Link C as evidence:

This is where you need to go if you want a moped. The people who run this place are awesome and are doing their part to build a better moped community in New York.

I love the crew at Second Stroke. Always friendly and helpful. I unfortunately work the exact same hours that their business is open and they were rad enough to stay late so I could come pick up my Cobra, they have really gone above and beyond for me.
They have always been really helpful and reliable also with their service. If I came in working on a project with my moped they are always nice and helpful, they’ll even offer suggestions on things to check for. This last time I brought my bike in for some major service (rebuilt engine) I couldn’t be happier with how great my bike is running. Thank you so much everyone!

This place rules. I was looking for a moped and had no idea what to think or how to go about getting one. I had a scooter and I figured it was time to settle on a moped. I was referred here by some friends and thought I would check it out.
They were honest, up front about everything and really helpful. They really seem to like that they do and know everything there is.
I’d go here if you’re looking to repair your moped, if you’re looking to BUY a moped, or if you’re on the fence and want someone to give you helpful answers about why to actually buy a moped.

This is why mechanics have a bad reputation. the staff had a terrible attitude and encouraged me to fix a issue with my bike — then the part that they replaced broke.
They tried to get me to pay for both services. i dont know how they are still in business.

The guy behind the desk was pretty friendly and we chatted a bit about what kind of work they do etc. I tried on a helmet (perfect fit ftw) and I’ll definitely be back to pick one up.
From what I saw, they sell mopeds for a reasonable price and a shop in back for repairs etc. Seems pretty legit.

Don’t need to say much here. The guy at the front desk was rude, unhelpful and made me feel like he was doing me a favor answering the few questions on the moped displayed in the window. Don’t expect great service.

I feel very lucky that Brooklyn is home to a place such as this.
Not only does it encourage and support a unique and cost effective form of transportation, it is executed by Ari and Co. In such a pleasurable and professional way. Whether you are looking to buy a new moped or need help rebuilding that one you got on Craigslist, these guys know the ins and outs of nearly anything with a two stroke engine. Those who would complain about wait times are entirely missing the point about choosing to ride some old beautiful cranky machine: you should know how your bike works, they are there to help, and they do it really well.

Of all the myriad vintage moped shops in Brooklyn, this one is my favorite.

But even if there were other moped shops, those other moped shops wouldn’t have Ari + Pete.
These dudes are the best dudes. And they do great work and they bill honest hours and they are SO PATIENT when I show up and ask them a thousand questions about my bike.
I brought them a train-​wreck of moped that I found in Connecticut and in a couple of weeks they had it back to me but now it’s mean and stylish and it sounds like a dozen angry chainsaws and it runs on tears and baby kittens and I’m pretty sure I could jump over the BQE with it if only I had the right ramp.

Second Stroke is a living embodiment of the American Dream realized on Broadway in Brooklyn.
If you own a car, or a scooter, you should sell them for scraps with haste just to have the pleasure of frequenting this moped-​only establishment.
I’m confident in saying I don’t know anyone as knowledgeable on any subject as these gentleman are on mopeds.

After nine weeks and countless frustrating calls in which I was either assured it would be «done tomorrow» or regaled with tales of why it was taking so darn long, I arrived at Second Stroke eager to ride off into the sunset. After ten minutes to get the engine to start, I found (almost to my demise) that the breaks were missing parts and did not work.
When I returned two weeks later and finally rode my bike home, in a final twist of pure comedic gold, I realized that my entire speedometer had been removed, but by then the whole thing was such a lost cause I just didn’t really care. I now have an incomplete bike with no front breaks that runs far worse than when I brought it in.
The store owner Pete told me that «more of a friend of the shop» with «poor attention to detail» had been given the project, which is not what I expect when I pay $ 310 to a supposedly reputable establishment. Looking back, I like to picture the guy sitting worriedly on the cold cement floor, covered in grease, parts of my moped sprawled all around him, hopelessly Googling for a manual, a forum, a picture, something to help get that bike back together right.
Honestly save yourself the infinite frustration and do not go here. It’s not really a legitimate business, but more of a hangout space for guys that like to tinker with bikes. Don’t let it be yours. I myself will never go back, unless it’s to pick up my speedometer.

Excellent work done on my bike for an awesome price by a bunch of guys who really know what they’re doing. Everyone is super friendly, and once they got it up and running, it’s still a great spot to pick up oil /​parts /​advice /​whatever. Try to show up for Sunday night rides!
Now that I got nailed on Queens Boulevard, I guess they’re going to be doing even more work on my bike. Be careful out there, and if you aren’t, be sure to let these guys fix your ride up once you’re no longer in the hospital!
This place compared with that other similar place we used to have in this city a couple years back is like night and day!

These guys are awesome! I bought my first moped here (Tomos Sprint 2012, custom modified) and they showed me everything i need to know about owning. I am so happy with my new moped! Everyone has been stopping me on the street and asking where I got it and I have been recommending them all to check out SSM. I have lived in Brooklyn for 6 years and can’t believe I just now got a moped. It is so much easier to get around with and faster than a bike. I live and work in brooklyn and I took my 45 min commute down to 20 mins!

Nice shop, nice guys and they deliver when they say they will. My moped spent a few long weeks here and these guys fixed it up right.
My previous experience at another shop sucked huge deek and cost me months of wasted time and hundreds in money I could have spent elsewhere. I think Second Stroke had my moped for about 5 weeks total, kept me updated every week and were upfront about the repairs they made.
No complaints from me. Next time I need something i’ll be going to them no question.

Did a lovely job fixing my brake cable and replacing my tires. Happy happy joy joy!
They were willing to meet me on a Saturday morning before opening since I was going out of town for the rest of the weekend, always a huge help.
