The fabulous food here is only rivaled by the fantastic service! Can’t find a better breakfast spot in the neighborhood, we drove 20 mins to get here! Definitely try the grits– life changing ;) we had egg with avocado, heirloom tomatoes and pesto– delicious– and the pecan sticky bun was out of control.

They are closed! The devastation is so real… That kale salad… That pesto sauce! Someone hand me a straight razor.

RIP Scratch Bread. I only had the pleasure of trying it out the day before you closed. The wait was so worth it. I won’t forget the light yet filling«The Works» grits or your just out of the oven Rosemary and Capers Focaccia. The pulled pork flat was so tasty as was the sticky bun. Loved the Biggie Smalls playlist playing in the background. Mad ups to good service.

My go-to breakfast spot in Bed Stuy. Typically get«The Works» which is just a boatload of flavors. I wish more breakfast spots would catch on and offer more inventive breakfast bowls like Scratch. Also love their abundance of sauces and pestos, they’re all good you can’t go wrong. Cookies are good too but definitely more of a breakfast spot. No seating but there is a bench outside. The inside can literally fit two people yet you’ll see several people crammed in here on any given day so you’re better off waiting outside for your food than getting yelled at by one of the cashiers for being in part of the line.

One wonders why Scratch Bread(NOTE: it’s a bakery window, not a café; no seating) isn’t a mainstay at the dozens of food halls and Smorgasburg franchises around the city — the inexpensive, dense, portable little brown packages of diet-defying, savory Southern flavors, plus its growing cult appeal, seem like a no-brainer for a bigger venue that can actually seat patrons. Maybe it’s a way of preserving Scratch for the fine folks of Bed-Sty, only? Anyway, should you find yourself the area during weekend brunchtime, this is pretty much The Place to go. You’ll just need to secure a place to eat in advance — because there’s nowhere in the immediate area to sit, and it’s a bit of a wet mess to eat on the go.

Food: Totally lives up to the hype… don’t waste time and go to SB as soon as possibly can. We had an egg sandwich and some grits – every ingredient was splendid and the level of execution was extremely. Incredible flavors that were matched really well. Service: Friendly and we did not wait terribly long for our order. Caveat: it was 9am on labor day and based on other times I have been by here, the line can get pretty long. Ambiance: Minimal. Food is served from a counter and there are a few counter spaces available indoors. Otherwise there are flower boxes to sit on outside along a not terribly quiet stretch of 3 – 4 lane Bedford Ave. Recommendation: Go early, go often and try everything.

The best breakfast I’ve had in a long time. The grits cooked perfectly… summer veggies delicious… kale awesome… pesto perfection… bacon …soft boiled egg made everything come together.

Well they did get rid of the most amazing meatball sub on the planet, which is a bit unfortunate. They still make really great sandwiches though!

So much yummy to be had here at Scratch Bread in Bed Stuy. I recently was in the neighborhood(some people will feel it’s a bit sketchy, but it’s safe and up and coming), so I decided to stop in this bread and sandwich place that I’d read so much about recently. Though there are no seats, and you must stand or eat outside, the food is worth every bit of the discomfort. I chose the delicious bagel with lox, cheese and the beautiful greens that graced it. There were so many other breakfast options that I wanted to try like the turkey sausage and egg on freshly baked bread. I also enjoyed a wonderful cup of Stumptown coffee and friendly servers.

Very nice place for a quick bite. The staff was very friendly at the counter. Quick service as there were 2 registers. The sandwiches were delicious. I ordered soft egg, roasted greens, and queso. Also had soft egg, avocado, and romesco. Both were prepared quickly and delicious. The brownie is super chocolatey, be prepared. The pecan roll is heavy and sweet, almost tasted spicy, maybe from the cinnamon. We ordered a loaf of cacio e pepe to go, and we were not disappointed. It’s a delicious combination.

I think my expectations were too high. 4.5 stars makes me expect impeccability. I ordered a kale salad with pulled pork, egg, and avocado. The pulled pork was alright, it was good, but not memorable in any way. The egg was an egg. The amount of avocado they gave me was ludicrously small. A tiny centimeter thick sliver smaller than my pinky.(my pinky is grotesquely long, but still.) The kale was good, I liked the dressing. I wish there would’ve been some mention of it containing croutons. Neat concept, but really average food. My boyfriend lives a block away, so I may stop by here again, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to eat here.

Scratch Bread has amazing grits. The best I’ve tried in a long time. The texture of the grits is perfect. The toppings are indulgent and well prepared. Bacon? Yes. Soft egg? Yes. Asparagus? Yes. Pesto? Yes. Yes, yes, yes! It’s all very rich, but is still quite the treat. If you can’t handle the decadence, you don’t deserve Scratch Bread grits.

Soft egg, queso, bacon, avocado sandwich. Fresh OJ. Can’t go wrong with this combo. One of the better quick breakfasts I’ve had. Its smokey and hot inside. While the girls in line in front of me said«lets wait outside so we don’t smell like bacon!!», i stood inside, proudly, waiting for my food.

I’m downgrading my review a lil because the last time I went I was underwhelmed by Scratch Bread’s recent changes. The preconceived sandwich options are different now – which is fine, changin’ it up is cool – but they eliminated some of my favorite options(like the veg flat,) and they no longer use the amazingly buttery-delicious bread they once did. Your sandwich bread options are now sourdough and focaccia; the focaccia was less soft than I had hoped and not nearly as tasty as the bread they used to use. Sandwich fillings were pretty stingy, i.e. my friend’s sandwich only had two tiny pieces of avocado near the edge of the bread. For an extra dollar, that sucks. The queso on my sandwich was lukewarm at best. Also, while I totally get the logic in choosing to set up a little inside space over the old hole in the wall, I gotta say I preferred the hole. When it’s busy, as it usually is, it gets extremely cramped and uncomfortable. I very strongly preferred lining up and waiting outside in the open air. The most positive change I can identify was the service; although the service was always good, on this last visit the person at the counter was extremely helpful, friendly, and calm even though it was crowded. I’ll be back to grab some pizza and test out more of the new options, but I can’t help but miss the old Scratch Bread.

Seriously one of my favorite spots! This place is a hole in the wall(quite literally), and has a handful, but diverse, menu selection everyday – but everything is fresh and so delicious. They have a sample out so you can see what you’re ordering, and really, I just base what I eat on what calls to my tummy the strongest while I’m there. And trust me, it’ll be a difficult decision! If you want to be more selective, you can also build your own grits, sandwich, etc. I think it’s hard to go wrong. I normally don’t have room in the end for the sweet stuff – but I’ve had the chai sticky bun and it was okay. I dig their hot items more – but I’m a savory person anyway. Tag a juice onto your meal too! Enjoy!

Innovative, delicious menu all throughout the day. They serve good coffee, good food for those who like spice and those who don’t, vegetarians and meat eaters, and they change up their menu a lot. No complaints. My favorite add-in is a soft egg. They taste good with everything, even if they do make things messy ;)

I don’t consider myself a regular at many places, but Scratch Bread is one of the only places I visit on a regular basis. Why? Well, for a few reasons. The Smell. Fresh baked bread(nom nom nom). Also for the coffee. They serve my second favorite coffee brand: Stumptown. Its so good. No milk or sugar is necessary. I also like going here because the service is friendly and there is always some interesting new food creation. Downside is that there is nowhere to sit :(, But I gladly take my coffee to go!

LOVE the new space. It wasn’t too overly packed when I came in for my weekly grit fix. Gets tight when a few people are waiting and that was just about 6 of us. Oh well. It’s worth it for the deliciousness that awaits my tastebuds. The squash, egg & avocado combo really is sublime.

Great great brunch. Order and bring it home or to a friend’s house, you’ll be king. Food is always fresh and worth the wait. It’s a sidewalk window. Cool concept. They save, so we save and get yummy food.

I ADORE the grits here. So creamy, dreamy. Delicious. Customizable toppings to suit your palate. Kale pesto and soft egg are a must. My other favorites include bacon and jalapeño. Spicy maple chicken sausage is also good, although I find it a tad too sweet. One needs to be in the right mood for it. Their sizes seem to have shrunk in the past year… so definitely get the grits in a large. Everything else that I’ve tried here– while good– is not quite as amazing. The breakfast sandwich that everyone raves about is good, but there’s usually too much bread(which sometimes seems a bit on the hard end) and not enough of the stuffings. Have definitely had better breakfast sandwiches(what up Lincoln Station!). The chai sticky bun is usually a big chunk of gooey awesomeness. But be warned, the chai bun contains large pieces of peppercorn. As other people have pointed out(and as is obvious from the photos) — this is essentially an outdoor stand. There’s usually a long line on the weekends and there’s no place to eat. So be prepared to wait and to stand and eat. 5 stars for the grits. 3.5÷4 for everything else.
