Aisha is gone, and after a year away from Salon Bohemia, trying other stylists, I’ve come back.
After a stylist at a neighboring salon «yes’d» me and gave me some underwhelming highlights, I came to Nicole.
Nicole gave me incredible shades of very pretty, flattering and soft blonde highlights that I’m in LOVE with. Beyond that, she’s cute, personable, asks the right questions, and will kindly tell you what you want isn’t realistic, if that’s the case. She’s very knowledgable and particular about her work – it was obvious even after 1 visit. She also took her time and was thorough even though I was her last client on a Friday night, which I truly appreciated.
I’m really looking forward to having her cut my hair on my next visit.

I started having Wendy color and cut my hair about two years ago, upon a friend’s recommendation. Never in my life have i had so many strangers stopping me everywhere to compliment my colors and style: a wedding usher, store personnel, staff at doctor’s offices, members of the gym I use, people in the elevator, dog-​walkers, etc. — not to mention friends and family! Wendy REALLY gets me: she listens carefully to my description of the haircut and colors that I would like, and usually suggests something (s) to enhance my ideas. She has a fabulous color sense, is extremely creative, and knows what will work well with my hair type, facial shape, and complexion, with respect to both haircut and hair coloring. Until going to Wendy, I had never been inspired to attempt several semi– permanent highlight «colors» in my hair at the same time; I felt confident that she — with my input — would devise a great combination of colors, along with a haircut that would show them off nicely! And I also appreciate the staff’s always checking to see if I’m comfortable; the atmosphere is laid-​back and welcoming.

I’ve been going to Wendy, the owner for about a year. I have longish curly hair (not super tight). I had a hard time finding someone who could give me a somewhat interesting cut that worked well. I’ve been to many many stylists and salons. I previously found a stylist in Manhattan that I liked but her price went up a lot and she moved salons to a location that was inconvenient for me so I decided to find someone in Brooklyn. I tried 5 stylist before finding Wendy. She layers my hair really well so I have the type of interesting, shapely cut that I’m looking for not the shaggy dog look that I got from many stylists. The salon isn’t fancy but it’s nice and comfortable. The only negative is that there is a bit of a product push but I’m sure it’s not easy to make rent in that location!

New to the neighborhood and this salon looked cute on my walks home. I desperately needed a cut and wanted to lighten my hair a bit with some balayage. I called before they opened on a Saturday morning hoping to get an appointment and I was lucky enough to get a spot in the afternoon. Carmen, their receptionist, was so sweet and my stylist, Shequilla, was so down to earth and did exactly what I wanted. SO NICE having an amazing stylist on the same page as you. Coming back ASAP for more highlights! Great staff, great aesthetic, and great products (mostly Paul Mitchell from what I saw). I plan on becoming a regular!

Jessica did my hair, color and cut, and treated me royally. I went in the morning when it wasn’t busy and it was a lovely feeling being pampered and not rushed. I love the color she chose and the way she knew what would look right for me. All I had to do was sit back and relax. The styling was perfect. So was the softness of my hair. What a nice change! Right from the beginning I felt I was in good hands. I can’t wait to go back!

Nicole is the best! She knows her stuff and really fun to talk to during the haircut & styling!

I absolutely loved my experience at this salon. Right from the get-​go, I knew I was going to be taken care of. The stylist that did my cut and color was Latoya, and she was extremely friendly and helpful.
When describing the kind of style I wanted, we talked for about 10 minutes or so in getting exactly what I wanted without there being any confusion. I had my hair washed, cut, then colored twice and then washed again and had it styled. And during the process, we had a conversation and even got a cup of coffee, which I seriously needed. She gave me tips on how to keep my hair healthy, which I will definitely do, lol.
I was very pleased with how everything went. I love my new look and I was happy with how everything was handled. This was my first time trying out the salon, and I may have found my go-​to salon!

For many, many years, I have struggled with finding a hair salon that knows how to treat my hair correctly. I have nordic hair, and it is incredibly sensitive and easily damaged if not treated correctly upon hair coloring/​highlighting. Salon Bohemia is the first hair salon that has actually been able to treat and color my hair correctly. When I called Salon Bohemia in September 2014 the first time to make an appointment, I was told they have a specialist within most hair colors and/​or hair types, so I decided to stop by as I was clueless on how to explain my own hair type. I was appointed with Jessica who cut my hair and highlighted it into a natural blonde color as my hair was pretty white from the summer months. I was very satisfied, and if it wasn’t for a college budget, I would have kept coming back every 6 – 8 weeks to treat my hair. The service was great, but she also gave me an important lecture on my own hair type and color. I have been oblivious treating it on my own, and she gave me many good tips.
I went back in April to cut my hair short (shoulder length) and highlight it. I was again appointed to Jessica who had written down the instructions from my last appointment so we could pick up where we left off. She was very patient when I had a hard time deciding the length I wanted to cut off, and actually came with suggestions on how I should highlight my hair. I have never been more happy with my hair than I was after this appointment. Jessica is also such a sweet individual who will make you feel very comfortable throughout your appointment. As soon as I am back in NY I am booking a new appointment at this salon!

I’ve been coming here for 6+ years. Nicole is great! She is a great colorist and I always receive compliments. Her cuts are great too. She is honest and will tell you what cuts will and will not work for you — I totally trust her!

So my 14 yr old daughter became obsessed with having side bangs. Only problem was her hair is very curly and dry. I was terrified to have her hair cut, especially after her last cut which was a year ago and that stylist ruined her hair gave her a horrible cut. So with much hesitation I gave in. I went on the Internet and salon Bohemia repeatedly kept on coming up under «best salon for curly /​ethnic hair ». So I made an appt. I have to say from the moment that I made the appt the girl who answered was very pleasant and sweet, I explained my fear that my daughters hair was long and very curly and I needed someone who knew how to do «Hispanic «hair She eased my fears and said don’t worry that’s what we specialize in.
So, on the day of my daughters appt we met Shequilla. The salon it self was very welcoming. As soon as Shequilla looked at my daughters hair she knew right away that it wasn’t even and that she was given that ridiculous tail in the back. (stylist that don’t know how to cut curly hair always seem to cut it in a v shape which looks like a long tail) so she asked if I wanted her hair cut wet or dry. I told her dry, she knew I was Nervous and she kept on saying «don’t worry mom ». Well long story short she cut her hair PERFECTLY !!! It’s almost a week later and my daughters hair looks amazing !!! It’s still long, she got rid of that tail, she gave her side bangs, and best of all my daughter is soooo happy !!! I highly highly recommend Shequilla my daughter felt very comfortable with her, she’s very easy to talk to and very sweet, and this salon !!! I finally found a place that I can go to that know exactly how to handle my type of hair !! I’m very very happy !!!

Absoulutley LOVE this place! I stumbled upon this place today and left feeling amazing! I didn’t have an appointment and they were able to accommodate. I told Nicole exactly what I was looking for and she exceeded my expectations! I will defiantly go back!

They say timing is everything. I have been looking for a hair salon in NYC for over a year and stumbled upon this salon. My hair has been thinning and they were able to provide me with options of different products.
From the service, to the people, to the products – I left feeling 100x better than when I walked in.

Since moving back to NY longer than I’d care to admit years ago, I was scattered about where I went to get my hair cut. Sometimes here, sometimes there, but I couldn’t ever commit. Then, I made the mistake of buying a groupon and getting highlights. Dear god in heaven, they were atrocious. Even after I went back to have them fixed, they were atrocious. Normally I am only moderately vain about these kinds of things, but I was only a week away from performing the wedding ceremony for some very close friends and knew that this orange skunk cap I was sporting would be captured forever in dreaded wedding pictures. I scavenged through Unilocal and the interweb and happened upon Salon Bohemia in the Slope.
Nicole is a godsend. Not only is she hilarious, she is really great at her job and fixed me up real good. Since I saw her well over a year ago, she’s the only person that I see. I’ve walked in there, having what can only be called a moment, and decided that I didn’t have good hair and that it was time to just cut it all off. And so cut it all off we did. AND I LOVE IT.
The whole salon vibe is fantastic, its fun and relaxed and not snooty. Everything they do is reasonably, which, lbh, in NY, even horrible salons feel entitled to NYC pricing. Great place. Trust them with your hair. Any and every type, they have you covered. I promise you.

I can’t believe I haven’t written a review for this salon yet! I’ve been going for over a year now and everyone always asks me where I get my hair done. They’re always surprised when I tell them I travel out to Park Slope from my Manhattan neighborhood, weather fair or foul, to sit in Nicole’s chair and have my locks cut. She is seriously my personal hair whisperer. I have the craaaziest mixed hair (Chinese and Black) and thanks to Nicole I am finally, FINALLY in love with my hair! She gives the best cuts. I wanted to do a pretty dramatic chop (of 8+ inches) so I could get a shaggy angled lob and she was like, «OK, let’s do it!» And then gave me THE. COOLEST. HAIRCUT. EVER. I feel like a rock star every day now. She also cut it perfectly to balance out my face, so now my cheekbones look insane. I LOVE IT.
Salon Bohemia can do ANY hair. I am extremely picky and a perfectionist when it comes to hair and I have yet to see a single less-​than-​amazing haircut, color, or style walk out the door of that salon. Seriously!!! It is no joke! When the seats are filled it’s like the United Nations of hair and everyone is getting something different done, and everyone leaves looking fabulous. Bonus points: the prices are ultra-​reasonable! I was used to spending at least twice as much for a much shoddier job. I am HOOKED on this place. I wish I could give it ten stars!

In a little over 2 hours, my hair was washed, under the dryer, then blow dried (for the parts that were still a bit damp), flat ironed, and then cut. Kiki was my stylist and she did an absolutely wonderful job! I was more than pleased with the results and her kind demeanor and conversation really made the time fly by. Also, it was close to $ 60 for everything! :-O Great price and service!

I never go to the salons because Ive always had bad experiences, But it was time to go natural. Id been transitioning for a year and my hair was a hott-​mess. the girls doing my shampoo where super nice and gentle, then Karen cut my hair and did a very, very good job. She suggested a few products to me and told me that my natural hair was gorgeous, unlike most stylists who just want to relax, flat-​iron, fry dye and lay my hair to the side. I will definitely be going back to her!

I called the salon to inquire about curly cuts. I was told by the receptionist that they do specialize. So I booked an appointment.
Really wish I hadn’t. Unfortunately I just got one of the worse «curly cuts» I have ever had :-(
Let me say this though. The salon is cute and clean and the hair stylists seem very welcoming. All the more reason I was very hopeful that I would come out a happy camper.
I told my hairstylist KIKI that I wanted to keep the length. Pulled taut, my hair was down to my waist. Curly, it was mid back. We talked about layers and staying away from it looking like a mullet and then she proceeded to cut my hair dry.
Right away I noticed she was already going too short and that the cuts were blunt as if she was cutting straight hair. I mentioned it looked shorter than I wanted to which she defended that she’d actually cut less than I had requested.
After washing it you could really see how short it was… I told her again it was ALOT shorter than I had asked and again she kept saying she cut less than I asked. How is that possible? Curly, my longest hair was past the the middle of my back. Now it’s hanging around my shoulders.
At this point I can’t grow the length back and I’m not going to cry about it. She put product in and put me under the dryer without putting hair pins to lift the roots. My hair is very tricky. Somedays it can be super curly and look like I have tons of hair but if I don’t take time to let it air dry and put the right products it’ll look somewhat flat. So If I want the roots to take volume I have to dry my hair upside down while scrunching hair to the roots. I noticed that under the dryer my roots were drying straight so I started scrunching it to give it some volume and she came over politely to let me know she would take care of that. I tried to explain to her if my hair dries like that it’ll stay wavy at the root and won’t curl. Excuse me, but I know my hair.
Anyway on to the «curly cut». It was terrible. She was pulling my already curly hair straight to work on the shape by doing blunt cuts. A curly cut is like pruning a bush. It’s not about making the hair even. It’s about shape. You’re supposed to cut curl for curl. When I explained that to her she seemed a little annoyed with me and honestly I can understand. Here I am, the client, basically telling her she’s not giving me a proper curly cut. But the reality was that she wasn’t. I have had a curly cut numerous times and every time my hair had length and I get compliments for the way my curls look. She then went in and cut curl for curl like I asked and just made it worse. Grabbing curls pulling them and snipping them randomly. I just pretended to be happy paid, tipped and left.
I would always get compliments on how long my hair had grown… I’m really upset at how short my hair is now. It took me 3 years to grow it the length that it was. Truly upset :-(

I’ve waited a while to write this because I wanted to be fair, but I really did not have a good experience.
I’m African American and went in for a relaxer and a short pixie cut, think Halle Berry ;). I’ve had this cut before so I was excited to go back to it and try out this Salon.
When she started with the relaxer she used oil sheen instead of a base cream. I had never seen this done before but she said that it was better at coating the scalp. I didn’t burn during the relaxing process at all, however when she was finished I didn’t feel that hair was as straight as it could be.
Then, instead of wet setting my hair she blow dried it straight. When you have short African American hair, it really is better to wet set it. It gives it a better mold to work with when curling. I have had it blow dried straight before, by someone who really knew how to work my hair, but again, wet setting is better.
I showed her a picture of what I was going for, it was a picture of me with a short pixie. She got to cutting and started with super short layers right away. She then used a flatiron to straighten the sides. I kept looking in the mirror to see when she was going to really style it, but by then she said, ‘Ok, all done.’ It looked pretty terrible. It did not have curl, or a style to it at all. I asked her to lay down the sides more, but she seemed to be in a rush. (She had mentioned that she had to go to her son’s school as soon as I sat in the chair. She also really smelled like cigarettes which was a bit off-​putting.)
I was completely dissatisfied. I think she could tell because when I went to pay she handed me a few random Paul Mitchell products. It was too little too late. I went home washed and wet set my hair myself. I was much happier, even though it was still too short but really, I shouldn’t have to do that after I’ve just paid upwards of $ 110 to get my hair done by a professional.
Now that I’ve let my hair grow out some I can tell that in fact some spots really did not get as relaxed as others.
I did notice though that several people who came in to get their (long) hair curled and straightened, walked out with a lovely hairdo, but for short haired ladies, the ‘cutting expert’ that I went to, with over 20 years of experience, was totally not capable of doing my hair.

After over 8 months of delaying a haircut and dreading the process of finding a new stylist (since I moved across the country, after all) I finally decided to check out Salon Bohemia, admittedly for it’s proximity to my house, BUT also for the outstanding reviews. Once again Unilocal came through for me, thank goodness!
I booked a quick 1:30pm cut with Karen who greeted me relatively promptly when I popped in. I love the overall vibe of the salon (relaxed, clean, modern, but not overly fake-​friendly. In other words, very Brooklyn-​laidback, which is what I prefer). Karen asked me what I’d like done and after explaining briefly and showing her a couple of example photos she nodded and whisked me over to the wash station.
Now, I typically try to wash my hair before going to a hair appointment (as a courtesy to the stylist, since I imagine handling gnarly hair is gross) and I was about to say that I didn’t think a wash was really necessary, but I figured «eh, why not.» I’m glad I didn’t skip the wash because even though it was brief, the head massage felt fantastic!
Although Karen cut my hair super fast, she was very meticulous and careful, measuring often and cutting both wet and dry. I was elated with the result and would definitely re-​book with her again in the future.
The only things I’d note here:
— Be careful where you set your bag /​purse! I ended up with locks of my hair in my bag, oops. (it’s my own hair so whatever, but kind of funny/​odd to find later on in the day!)
— Tips are CASH only, which I felt terrible about since I did not have a lot of cash handy. Next time I’ll have to double up on my tip to reimburse Karen!
Prices were fair/​very reasonable!

This is more than three but not yet a four.
Karen from Salon Bohemia is my new favorite person. I walk by here several times a week on my way to work and finally one day I walked in and was like I need an appointment for a single process on Sunday. I have resistant grey-​it sucks. The only thing I said to her was that the woman who has been coloring my hair for almost two years never pulls the color through and I thought that was weird. Karen was like «yeah, that’s weird. I’m going to pull it through.» I am pleased with the results and return a second time. I am in desperate need of a haircut but it is not until last month I decide to take the plunge.
I am like: «Karen, every person who has cut my hair for the last five years is all We have to take this weigh out-​and proceeds to razor my hair.»
Karen responds «you have a lot of hair but your actual hair strands are not thick or oval so razoring is not a good idea in fact it sucks it makes split ends go to the crown.»
My mind is blown Karen is like morphemes in The Matrix I no longer know what to believe. She says «you want long layers? keeping it long?» I say yes.
For the first time EVER someone cuts my hair dry I was kind of scared but figured it was so overlong if for some reason Karen eftfs up it will grow back. She seems to know what she is doing and then washes my hair and dries it. i.e. not EFFING it up.
I will be back.
FUCK the overpriced bullshit Manhattan salons I have been going to it is all about Karen right now.
The salon is clean and they don’t have a ton of BS you are overpaying for.
