Petland Discounts

Came here to get a leopard gecko after having seen a few online. Should have done far more prior research instead of relying on the staff to answer questions. Was sold two juveniles which were around a week old, and found out soon afterward that housing two together is not recommended whatsoever. Furthermore, both lizards were severely underweight. Ended up having to take one in for veterinary care, only to have it euthanised at the doctor’s recommendation. We aren’t inexperienced pet owners, having turtles for years; but on account of a lack of due diligence on our part for not having done adequate research coupled with a staff incorrectly answering questions we’ve now spent hundreds of dollars in futile stop-​gap measures which could have been better spent up front on a more suitable setup.
Can no longer give this location our patronage in good consciousness. In complete contrast, the staff at the Fulton Street location are knowledgeable and have been extremely helpful.
Avoid the Willoughby location if at all possible.

It’s wayyy better than Petco. I find myself going to that location more than the one near my house for some reason. Im a turtle owner and they always have the stuff I need. Great stuff!

It is rare that you stumble upon a customer service gem like this Petland Discounts! Kudos to the management for hiring an all-​star staff. And kudos to the staff for being caring, friendly and knowledgeable about all of their products.
When you walk in, and know what you want, you aren’t bothered. But when you have a confused look on your face, a helpful friendly face appears to ask «Do you need some help?» And they always know the answers to my questions! And I have lots of questions!!!
Minus one star because this place needs two cash registers. It gets busy and the one cash register with the very slow credit card machine really takes away from the rest of the great experience. And the girl doing the cash register shouldn’t have to answer the phones too. Get one of those other smiling faces to do it! I actually left once because there were 5 people in front of me in line. I knew that was at least a half hour.

Let’s just say you can’t get better service and feel like all your needs are met. We are nervous, new puppy parents and the woman who helped us made us feel really comfortable. This will be my go to place for all my little puppy’s needs. They don’t have the biggest selection, but they do have what you need.

This place is usually my first stop when looking for items for Cinque… his spoiled behind. Anywho, this place is a couple blocks away from by job… over by ASA so its not hard to find.
The prices are decent and you can return stuff as long as you restrain your receipt… like who doesn’t. Selection isn’t prefect but they have the essentials and they could usually order something if you need it bad enough. The skinny hispanic guy behind the counter is really an ass but the other employees really go out their way to get you what you need.
Place isn’t always clean which is a bit of turnoff. Never seen a sale section but maybe they have one now.

95% of the time, Petland Discounts is the bastard step child of all the pet superstores. Usually sparsely stocked, with minimal discounts I was always disgruntled after coming out of there. But this Petland is an exception to the rule. This Petland Discounts is pretty: off the chain: as far as petstore standards go in the city. It’s refreshing to have a decently stocked store in the neighborhood.
Good selection, helpful staff. Reasonable prices.

I am sorry to inform you Emily but the employees at Petland barely know the basics about fishes and far less about how to keep goldfishes. The truth about goldfishes is you need 20 gallons per goldfish and an additional 10 gallons for every other goldfish. So for the 5 goldfish they gave you, you would actually need 60 gallons. Many people are skeptical to believe these facts since the aquarium industry portrays pictures of goldfishes in 5 gallon kits and people try follow those images. Whats funny is that Petland even sells a book about proper care for goldfish under the publication of Animal planet/​TFH and it clearly states exactly what i said of goldfishes needing 20 gallons for the first and another 10 for every other. I would advise you to never trust what most petland employees say concerning fishes or aquariums. They are not qualified to sell a fish and at the end of the day its all about sales to them. In case you want to purchase goldfish from a quality store go to Pacific Aquarium in Delancy :)

Something happened this summer and somehow this Petland Discounts became my emergency accidental pet supply go-​to for Brooklyn.
Oh wait, I know what happened. Too much beer at Coney Island happened and my boyfriend and I awoke one morning to find two goldfish living in his popcorn bowl attempting to avoid the granola we thought they would appreciate.
With Petcos and Petsmarts being a trip on the Belt Parkway away in Long Island, we were happy to find this Petland Discounts just blocks away in the heart of Boerum Hill. We found the store to be surprisingly large in size given the small storefront and their supply selection for all of your average house pets packed the shelves. In the stocked aquarium isle, we easily located a nice fish bowl and the appropriate accessories for our new aquatic friends. The staff gave us some basic advice about fish, I fell in love with a Goffin’s Cockatoo and we were on our way.
Six weeks later, we were one fish down, my boyfriend was looking for a less labor intensive way of keeping the tank water clean and I wanted to find a way to birdknap that cockatoo. So, off we went seeking the advice of Petland Discounts again. At the time they had excellent deals on starter aquariums kits and an attentive employee answered all of our questions. We had not realized that it was closing time when we arrived and it was extremely nice of the staff to not kick us out as we continued to seek information. We walked out with a new 10 gallon tank and all necessary equipment and 5 new fancy goldfish, I played with the cockatoo and we even had a credit for $ 10 worth of fish that came with the tank purchase.
Last weekend, Coney Island was just screwing with us and we awoke to two tiny red eared slider turtles in a saucepan and 10 new goldfish. The store’s $ 10 for a 10 gallon tank special was awfully convenient as my boyfriend returned to learn about and purchase exactly what these turtles needed. (Hint: it was not a saucepan)
Last time I noticed they were also providing vaccinations for dogs and there was quite a crowd of pooches and their people in the store. Though I wouldn’t come here for any kind of exotic pet supplies, this Petland Discounts has proven to be a reliable and friendly location for all of our basic pet needs.
