I would give this place six stars if I could. The chocolate babka from here is so so amazing. The owner is also so kind and friendly. If you are looking for babka in New York. Come here!

I don’t Unilocal often, only when something is truly worthwhile. The chocolate babka from Oneg Bakery was out of this world! The woman at the counter asked if I wanted heavy or extra heavy. I said«Heavy what?» She said«Chocolate!» Obviously I chose extra heavy and I’m glad I did. It was the best babka I’ve ever had!

Pure heaven in babka form — it’s everything that is good about babka — goeey, more chocolatey than challah-y, not subtle and certainly not for the faint of heart. Also they’re incredibly nice… Warm, Jewish vibes and babka and babka and babkaaaaaaaaa

Oneg has the best chocolate babka I have ever had in the City. I am no expert on them and am not looking for authenticity or anything like that, but I am no noob either, having tried some of the best at Mother’s in the Bronx, Breads Bakery in Union Square, and a few others here on Lee Avenue as well. We purchased a single slice of babka about an inch thick, and it was so sweet, decadent and dense that it lasted us 2 days. Those folds you see in the photo are filled with delicious, thick, fudge-meets-brownie-batter richness, and the folds of pastry are the consistency of the inside of a cinnamon bun. The exterior has a crumbly, croissant like edge with less buttery taste, but a perfect contrast to the gooey interior. The sweetness is high, but not in the typical way. I don’t know how they did it but the sweetness sits underneath the rich chocolate taste, instead of hitting you smack on the tongue. Oneg is definitely worth a stop if you are near Lee Avenue for the babka, the hamentashen and some of the other small bites.

I’m scared that if we all give positive reviews, it’ll be soon discovered. So good. So so good.

I love babka. I think it’s one of the greatest things about living in NY(I’m from the midwest, which is deprived of babka). I would consider myself a babka fanatic. This place tops the list of every babka ever known to me and maybe every baked good. We happened to Unilocal it back in February when we were at Peter Luger’s and knew we were close to the Hasidic part of Williamsburg. Not many reviews but gave it a try. We couldn’t stop raving about it, ate basically the whole half loaf in 2 days(for two of us) and couldn’t stop wanting to go back. Today we went back. They had«heavy chocolate» or «heavy heavy heavy chocolate». We got 3lbs worth(for 3 people and to save some). What a great decision. It was so delicious. Gooey, soft, slightly undercooked and heavenly. We have driven there(easy street parking) but I don’t think it’s really close to a subway(but maybe the long walk would help burn off some of the babka). It’s a very religious neighborhood and if you’re not Hasidic, you will feel out of place, but it’s not unfriendly. I would not walk around wearing a mini-skirt or skimpy tank top, though, out of respect. Also of note — closed in the summer, on Sabbath(Friday afternoon/Saturday) and Jewish holidays. Go early in the day because it’s possible they will run out. I hope to keep this place somewhat of a secret for selfish reasons.

The best chocolate babka I’ve ever had; it’s worth its weight in gold.

This is the type of place that is quintessential New York. And the lack of reviews indicates that it hasn’t become trendy yet. Which may be a good or bad thing. But just look at the picture. It’ll sum up the glory of this babka. Multi-layered, decadent, chocolatey, good texture. What more do you want? Hipsters? Nah, wrong side of Williamsburg, but at least there’s still plenty of beard and facial hair here! This is the perfect Jewish babka. Beats Green’s, no contest. I’ll forewarn you though, this is not the same as Polish or Goyam babka. Much denser and sweeter and a different shape. Nevertheless, take a trip here. Also closed on Saturdays!

Perhaps babka and rugelach are not my type of pastry in general… maybe it’s the dry and heavy dough or extremely sweet sort of chocolate spread that they put in it(to me it has nothing to do with how real chocolate tastes like…) The babka was overloaded with sugar for sure so only if you’re a fan of that type of pastry give it a try. I think I will wait a couple years before trying any babka again.

Very good babka. Got the ‘light’ one which still seemed very chocolate heavy to me! I also thought their other babka-like treat was very good — it’s similar but flatter and less gooey and chocolatey(quite similar to Zucker Bakery’s babka, which I love).

My 500th review is all about the babka. Because what else can it be about for a Jew from Brooklyn? Now if you’ve read my Green’s Bakery review, you’ll know that I grew up on babka. My grandmother would make the very best babka in the world and it was my very favorite dessert. Forget Oreos and Mallomars. It was all about the babka. And then my grandma passed away. :-(My mom never got the recipe and so it was lost forever. Until I found Green’s. But then something happened. On my way home the other day, I decided to pop into Oneg’s and try the babka. I saw glowing reviews and figured I’d give it a shot. Surely it wasn’t at the level of Green’s. And it wasn’t. It was better! What!!! This even beats out my nostalgia. What makes it so damn good? It’s just layers and layers of rich chocolate. A really good babka should be moist and chocolate-centric. This is it. This is the best damn babka I’ve ever had in my life! At $ 8/lb, it’s good value considering how good and filling it is. So I will return and I will be bringing my sister, who is also a babka-holic. But if you like old-school babka, this is it.

I can’t bring myself to eat another Zabar’s babka now. I’m ruined. There’s no going back. I didn’t even know babka could be this moist and rich and chocolate gooey. I knew not what my life was missing. Yes, Oneg Hamishe’s babka might seem pricey($ 19 compared to a $ 10 or $ 12 Green’s babka or whatever). I am as cheap as they come, but this is worth every penny. Bonus points for the young guy behind the counter being super friendly.

Everything is good, especially the rum balls and the three-jam Linzer cookies, but I wasn’t blown away. The sweet roll had a good, strong Vanilla flavor and was something I don’t recall seeing before. The bakery closes for like three months during the summer, so be warned.

Amazing chocolate babka and chocolate rogelach(chocolate crescent rolls). Make sure you buy the babka, its behind the counter and you say how much you want, and they cut you off a piece and weigh it. They also have something that looks more like a chocolate strudel, which doesn’t have the height of the babka.

I walked for 30 min in the scorching sun to get babka as this place was supposed to have the best babka** in the NYC area, but the babka connoiseurs in my group weren’t very impressed. I thought it was ok. This place is tiny but very cute. ** For non-Jewish people, that’s a chocolate roll.
