Rolfing — named after its founder, Dr. Ida P. Rolf — is often referred to as «structural integration.» It is not simply massage, but a system of deep manipulation of the connective tissues that aims to restructure the fascia (the sheath of tissue that surrounds all muscles) and relieve physical misalignment.
The ultimate goal, along with resetting alignment patterns in the body, is to improve movement and posture, reduce stress and create an overall sense of well-being.
According to Dr. Andrew Weil, «You become more in touch with your body, experience less pain and stress, improve your posture, even release repressed emotions and diminish habitual muscle tension. People who have experienced Rolfing often find an improvement in their professional and daily activities.»
One of the best side effects is the feeling of being comfortable in one own’s skin — and moving in a new body, one that moves more freely than before.
Meet the Business Owner
Lowell F.
Business Owner
I first became involved in Rolfing about fifteen years ago when looking for relief from chronic back and neck tension. At the time, I was a part-owner of Kate’s Paperie, a retail business in New York City.
While working to build an exciting, dynamic business, I felt physically uncomfortable in my body — sitting in meetings or working at the computer aggravated the discomfort in my neck and spine. My body felt locked-up, restricted, and I needed relief from what felt like a constant vice-grip of tension and strain.
After doctor visits and unsuccessful sessions with traditional physical therapy, I felt somewhat hopeless about what might help. One day my brother handed me a business card saying that he had met someone who was a Rolfer — I had never heard of Rolfing but after doing a little research, I decided to try a few sessions. I soon realized that I had found something special.
