Kula Yoga Project

Hands down, my favorite yoga studio and I have tried them all. Nikki and Schuyler have this level of excellence that trickles down to their students. Besides them I enjoy classes lead by Rebecca, Kevin B, Mika, Margaret, Jillian. Actually I have enjoyed all their instructors. I love kula. It is a must for anyone that wants to take their practice to the next level.

I love this studio. The level of instruction is excellent; as a result, I feel safe enough to push myself and take chances in spite of the fact that I’m recovering from surgery. The instructors are given a great degree of freedom, so some classes may appeal to you more than others.
In every class I’ve taken at Kula, there is a great deal of emphasis on proper alignment, understanding anatomy, and building strength. The Basics classes are a great place to start if you’ve been practicing yoga at a gym or in an environment where the teachers do not make many adjustments, even if you’re in great shape and have been practicing awhile. For example, Rebecca brings anatomy books to her Basics classes in order to frame the objective of the class when it begins. By flowing her students through very common asanas – such as downward dog to plank to child’s pose – she demonstrates the connection between each position, which helped me to identify what I was doing wrong and to be able to self-​correct. As a result, I’m no longer injuring my shoulders when I practice. Jillian’s Kula Flow class is challenging and thrilling. She is extremely specific about how to position each muscle that you are engaging, exactly where to place your limbs, and she assesses her students and clarifies her instructions when she realizes they are confused. Her class is demanding but she is such a talented teacher that I’m able to keep up and I have really pushed myself. The other teachers I’ve had are great as well.
Again, I have tried several studios in the city and this is by far my favorite. They have a location in Tribeca too and it is just as awesome.

Kula Yoga was actually the first yoga studio I ever visited when I moved to New York City. The ambience is incredible. As my friend said, the concentration and reverence for the moment is so thick and tangible in the room that it feels like you could slice through it with a knife.
As with any yoga studio, it is important to discover which instructors fit your goals and style. I’ve enjoyed Nikki and Maggie’s classes. I like that the teaching styles are very individual rather than a mass-​processed group of people all teaching a routine. I like that Kula instructors take a whole-​body whole-​mind focus, and that it is something different from power flow. They are not afraid to be creative. The room gets quite warm, which I enjoy as well. Bring a towel if you get sweaty!
The studio in Williamsburg shares a building with Shanti Shack, where you can get lovely vegan food if you get hungry afterwards. The yoga classes do feel like a splurge, but you’d be hard-​pressed to find a yoga environment like this one in all of NYC.

I started going to yoga here since a good friend lives in the area and will only go close to home. At first I didn’t like the two teachers I had and then I realized that I was in the wrong level class. I began to go to the basics and beginner classes, even though I’ve done yoga on and off for 7 years, I was not in shape enough to do the intermediate classes here. I fell in LOVE with Kevin’s Tuesday night class and really liked the Sunday 10am instructor (Sarah?). I love the atmosphere and the studios but they do charge for mats.

I love this place, just went there the first time and am smitten. The studio is beautiful, warm and light-​filled, and the people who both work or attend are friendly. I got the feeling this is a bit inner circle as yoga studios go; a lot of my classmates were hugging hello and hanging around after to chat. Good sign. Also, I recognized some instructors and studio owners in there – had a moment where I thought I might have overstepped in my level, but I took Kula Flow and it was awesome, nearly two hours and it went by quickly but I felt the time, got a lot from the class. I took Schuyler’s class and she is an interesting person, small, strong, funny, a bit like a tough mom, but then also gently encouraging. She doesn’t demo, moved around doing adjustments the whole time – helped me intensely with a couple pigeon and other deep stretches. Very much a learning class for me, someone at a beg-​intermediate level, but I had no problem keeping up. Taking this class regularly would definitely elevate you to the next level, wherever you’re at. I can’t wait to try some of the other instructors and their Honey Flow (vinyasa + restorative).

Kula is a beautiful oasis not far from the city. Nice amenity touches and all teachers have been excellent. Give praise someone has made and kept such a beautiful place to practice. Thanks Kula

My favorite moments in their yoga classes have been in Ariel’s classes. I love his technique, breathe work, outlook on life, and his challenging flows. He has some amazing skills! I love his creative flows and have adopted many of his moves to my home practice like the threading techniques of stretching, and the way he can make me feel sore for days! He teaches on Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings and I cannot recommend him enough. The studio itself is beautiful and well run, I have gone here for 5 months. The only downside is they need more air circulating throughout the studio since it can get sweaty and might be even worse in the summer. I love that there is a sauna and a café attached to the studio as well that serves wholesome, healthy food. I found a good community here and cannot wait to try the honey flow classes or release the beast. I also love that they have a kids kula hour and one for parents that run during the same time!

This is a review for the prenatal yoga class with Nikita. I started going once then twice a week when I was four months pregnant, and it has definitely helped me stay in shape, avoid back pain and learn lots of useful tips. Nikita is a great yoga teacher and quite knowledgeable about everything concerning pregnancy. Really recommend.

Kula is life-​changing yoga. Deeply serious but plenty supportive, this community consistently delivers intelligent classes that push my practice to its limit in wonderful ways. I’ve had great experiences with Jillian, Rebecca, Benn and Mila in particular. It doesn’t hurt that the studio is beautiful and also houses Shanti Shack, which makes amazing healthy food.

Ay Ay Ay! I really wanted to love Kula, but had a terrible class.
Pros: The space is beautiful, clean and well organized. The front desk folks are friendly and good at orienting newbies. The equipment is good (i really like the yoga bricks that they use). My sister rented a mat and it was in good shape. They have a good system for safely storing personal stuff. The acoustics in the practice room are great. Oms here are like a transcendent chorus of angels.
Cons: The teacher. Oh my god. This instructor. She walked in and started dishing about soulcycle, about how much she loved it. And then she said something like.
«It (soulcycle) is only 45 minutes and its really so expensive. It made me realize that that’s how much we should be charging you guys.»
And then she said a sentence that included the word «retarded,» (REALLY? ARE YOU EFFING KIDDING ME? No. Just No. Words of marginalization do not belong in a yoga class, even if they’ve entered the vernacular)
and then she said «get into downward dog.» No Oms. No breathing. No come into your own head. No inquiry as to the general health or injury status of yogis. Just.
«Get into downward dog.»
and i was like… should i leave?
But i stuck it out. And the class did get better. But it was like a sweaty one night stand with someone that I’ll never call again. No breathing directions or instruction. No modifications offered. The instructor frequently mis-​spoke directions. That’s fine, it happens. Its not fine to get snippy with the class for turning to the back of the mat (what she said), when she meant that we should turn forward. Shaming students, using words like «retarded,» and engaging in a non-​breath focused exercise class that begins with an homage to Soulcycle is not my idea of a great yoga instructor.
I’d like to go back and give them another chance, but I’m not sure if i can make myself.

This is the one yoga place where I have found myself consistently practicing. The teachers all have different takes on the flow classes, but it’s always a good challenge going to any of the classes.
I had my best yoga moments in Ariel’s Sunday morning class. Also the Saturday yoga hour class with Danielle is always solid.
The bakery in this place is also so amazing. It makes a good dent in your wallet though if you come out of the class feeling like some baked goods and a smoothie.
One drawback of the place is that it’s crowded a lot of times. Be sure to come to class early on the weekends.

Kula Yoga Project is phenomenal! It was one of the key factors of recently renting an apartment in the Northside, knowing this amazing place can be walking distance. As a previous Tirbeca obsessed student, I know Nikki as an intensely committed yoga teacher and she has done a wonderful job creating a space which always feels like home. The class sizes are just right and the favorite teachers keep growing, aka Erin and Erin. During a hard work week, I love the Honey flow class structure which allows just enough vinyassa and then full restorative to absorb all the goodness:) Some teachers are more alignment oriented (which I love) as opposed to the more meditative focused. but I feel the sacred groundedness whenever I exit the doors.
PS Brownie has awesome energy and you can taste it in the precious food she makes!

This is a great studio! My favorite teachers are Miriam and Lori, who are so nice and super helpful. The facilities are great, and I love how small the classes are. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that the classes are pretty pricey. Either way, I look forward to going here every time!

I really really like this place. I am a seasoned yogini who has practiced consistently for over 7 years in varous traditions, less consistently for 10+years… I had been to the tribeca location years ago and I have now taken a bunch of classes here. While this isn’t my main place for practice, it is a nice alternative. I like variety and this place has wonderful teachers, gracious staff, and it is a beautiful space to practice in.
I would advise newbies to check out appropriate classes as classes fill up with a lot of seasoned yogis and there is only one teacher, so for more instruction, choose wisely.
The only reason i am not rating it higher is because I think their rates could be better, especially given their popularity. Yoga needs to be accessible to all. At these prices, it sadly keeps a lot out. Also, I feel that meditation is not an element in the classes here. They concentrate on asana practice primarily. None of the classes I have attended here have incorporated meditation, or pranayam. However, they do keep a very tranquil, sacred space and that goes a long way. Again, this isn’t my main yoga shala, but supplimental. The teachers are top notch — as for asana direction /​choreography. –Hari om yogis! Hope this helps…

I am in love with this studio. Beautiful layout with great love and thought put into every detail, devoted and knowledgable teachers who make their way around the class to correct postures and coach newer students through difficult poses, sauna, shower, free purified water to fill up water bottles, amazing food/juices…this place rocks.
The classes are solid– I am currently trying to get my yoga body back and definitely feel the sweat/​burn, but so do all the yogis who look more advanced. I can’t wait to try the delicious-​sounding honey flow, which is an hour of butt-​kicking and ½ hour of deep stretching.
I have only been twice so far but I loved it so much I bought a month pass, and I know it’s gonna be an awesome month. I am excited to for my practice to deepen and I have no doubt that it will at this amazing studio.
Also– Nikki is great. I love teachers who walk around and put the focus on the students and the practice. She adjusted many of my asanas– even down dog! (Don’t I know that one by now?!) Well apparently not– she said I was hyperextending and told me to do a simple tweek and it has made a huge difference. I am so grateful for such a hands-​on and helpful approach.

I love the teachers. They really do a great job of giving corrections and giving individual attention. I used to practice at Pure in the upper east side and the one thing I miss most is sweating. I don’t know why but I rarely break out into a sweat in any of the classes at Kula. I think they need to make the rooms hotter or keep the classes moving at a faster pace to keep our heart rates up. The space is pretty unique and eccentric with a very pricey snack bar which sells organic ave coconut water and fresh baked breads. I think I’ve gained weight since I stopped going to Pure where I could regularly take hot power yoga classes and do vinyasa yoga in hotter rooms…
ps they do have one shower and unlike their tribeca sister, the place never gets that crowded. it’s a hidden gem that every yogi should check out! plus it’s near a great beer garden. yoga and beer make a great combo!:)

I LOVE Kula Yoga! I come all the way from the city for this little gem. It’s not too big so classes are more intimate. Alex is awesome, she is not afraid to get hands on with you to adjust you into the right position to really give you that oh-​so-​good stretch. The classes are challenging, yet relaxing.
I haven’t tried the café yet, but sometimes I can smell homemade cornbread cooking while in class and it smells amaaaaaazing. I am definitely going to try it next time I go in!

It’s the same intelligent teachers from Kula Yoga in Tribeca but with the additional amenities of a sauna, shower, café, loft and a barn door. Also, they brought the signature «honey flow» classes here which I can’t find anywhere else in the city – one hour of vinyasa flow followed by a half hour of restorative poses.
The smell from their vegetarian comfort food café and the Mast Brothers chocolate factory can creep into your class all at once and seriously jack your concentration but other than that the design of this place is perfect.

I love it here. Want to ditch my Yogaworks membership and move into the Kula studio. Too bad Yogaworks is around the corner from work and Kula is a serious schlep from my East Williamsburg abode. I will for sure be weekend warrior-​ing it here. Fun bonus: there is an extremely cute veggie-​style café in the front of the studio.

I’ve been going to Kula Yoga in Tribeca since it opened in 2002. How lucky are we to have a sister studio right in Williamsburg, just steps from the Bedford L stop?! Two beautiful practice rooms, offering signature kula flow classes, as well as prenatal, kids yoga, and hour-​long classes when you just need a shot of yoga.
Bonus: they have showers and a sauna. Bonus bonus: vegan café onsite, Shanti Shack. Plus there is a cozy lounging area on the mezzanine. You could theoretically spend the whole day here…
