I have been TRYING to make a appointment for a little over a month now and still no luck. I don’t have the leisure to drive all the way here just to make a appointment! You call the phone it rings and rings and rings. After calling three times straight someone FINALLY picks up, but they don’t say hello, (I’m thinking did someone pick up or am I at voicemail?) so after like 5 seconds a woman practicality screams into the phone HEEELLLLLOOOO?! All loud and ghetto… like huh?
I was rendered momentary speechless. Like who answers their business phone like that? First you don’t answer the phone, then when you do answer the phone, you don’t say anything, and then when you do say something you yell into it because the person on the other side didn’t say anything. Like who does that? So, I gather myself and ask to make an appointment, the lady was like I’m doing someone’s head, call later and hangs up… Bish wha? If that’s the case hire a receptionist or something.
F this place. I’m going to ask Groupon customer support Center if I can get a refund or some type of credit. This place is a blood joke. I have grown to dislike natural hair salons. I’m going to go in person to make an appointment because calling the phone doesn’t work.

I have posted a picture of their salon and I says for sale! WTH?! I left work early for this?! The place is a joke. I immediately called Groupon and told them my situation, they understand and refunded Groupon credits of the amount I paid. Also this shop still has a Groupon up on the website. They are stealing ppls money!
SAVE YOURSELF THE TROUBLE AND DON’T BUY THE GROUPON DEAL!

Hey! Since a fellow Unilocaler referred me to this place I decided to give it a shot. I found a Groupon for either a condition/​rod set or a condition/​flat iron treatment so I asked for the rod set. Hair dresser wasn’t welcoming when I came in at all and made me felt out of placed. She was kind of cold and asked wasn’t I supposed to come in at 1. Umm first off my appointment was for 1:30pm and I arrived about 5 –10 minutes before. Plus I was at a friend’s house in the morning, which was right across the street. Why would I come there late if I was across the street. Anyway she realized she made a mistake when she looked at her book, but not say sorry for the confusion or anything like that. Okay off to a rough start, but hey miscommunication happens.
I don’t know what everyone else is talking about these advices she gives. I didn’t get any of these tips and advisements during the process I experienced such as hair care pointers etc. or what not use asked me what I needed. I had to keep asking her questions for her to warm up and she responded with a tip to keep the style. It was pulling teeth. Until she asked me which style I wanted and the very end she gave me feedback. The other hair dresser was more engaging and welcoming nice while my hair was being styled. Made me wished that I was in her chair than the one I was in.
There was a downstairs level where i can put my jacket which was great! The downstairs was also the coloring station washing station and drying station. Downsides to the lower level. No phone reception. The tv was off and could hear the music from upstairs. So there are no distractions while drying your hair. Oh and did I mention nail salon… nope there is also a nail salon through one of the doors. Sadly the whole hair drying time, I can smell the harsh acetone and acrylic. That really turned me off. I don’t know if this is a red flag, but the place is very empty for a Saturday mid afternoon. Also there were a lot of empty booth stations in the salon. Seems like everyone isn’t hired for the Knaps Salon. Looking more like dressers are just renting booth for the space. Not cohesive hair salon.
The only plus was the time it took to do my hair and location. Her timing time management with doing my hair is great. It seems like that she know what she’d doing. The place is in an easy location. Walking distance from the 2,3 train and 44 local bus stop. Overall I have mixed views about coming back. Even though I didn’t have to stay longer than I had to, I felt uncomfortable most of the time I was there. So I’m leaning towards not coming back and looking for another place.

got a groupon. it expired because Im a very busy working professional. when I called to ask the «lady» what avenue to proceed to next. A raspy, harsh voice appeared on the phone asking me «why you took so long to make an appointment?» huh? why do you care? you are getting paid aren’t you??? anyways. the groupon is 35 dollars. for a wash and flat iron. after she spinned it she basically stated that it will cost 75 dollars! WHAT??? okay because I was busy with work, and sick periodically. how does it jump to that!!! they get to keep my 35 because with such nasty attitudes and trying to scam. they will not lay a finger on my beautiful 27″ hair!
now they have increased their price to 55 dollars on the groupon. so if your groupon expires its like what, over $ 100! lol. yeah I’ll pass and do my hair myself. Im probably better off. soooo expecting this «lady» to take time to «respond» take less time being offended and more time having better customer service and honest business.

I used a Groupon for a deep conditioner treatment and two stand twist for my 13 year old daughter. I’m so glad I did! I love the results!!! Thank you Kisha.

They have very nice stylists but my 8 yr old daughter and I go to Monique. My daughter, of course, has thick, natural hair and since Monique has been treating her hair it has become longer, thicker and more manageable. She smiles every time she gets out her chair. As for me, Monique is helping me transition back into my natural hair. She does my sew-​ins that look like they are growing out of my head. She can also mix up any color i think of. There’s a little bit of a wait but it’s totally worth it.

I brought a groupon to try this place out. I had been trying to find a good salon that specialized in natural hair for a while now. I had the best experience with Keisha. She did an amazing job! I got the wash, deep condition, flat iron and trim. I was very skeptical about the flat iron actually getting my hair straight how I wanted but my hair wad not only was it straight, it was flowing and bouncing. Keisha gave me advice throughout the process on ways I could better care for my natural hair. She educated me on products without pushing the products she uses. Everyone at the salon was very friendly. I already scheduled my next appointment.

I bought a Groupon for the rod set and deep treatment, and I must say Keisha did a great job on my hair. My flexi rod set was very bouncy and soft. not hard and crunchy. I was in and out in a very reasonable time frame. I will purchase another Groupon for this service, seemingly that is the only way I can afford such service. The regular prices are a bit high for me to keep up with on a norm. But I will highly recommended this salon and Keisha.

I found this shop on Groupon and was excited to check it out. The shop is nicely kept and Keisha is awesome. She takes her time to find out what products you’re using and what you are trying to do. If you’re looking for a rush job don’t bother. If you’re in a hurry tell her in advance because she’s giving you the full treatment. She’s an artist so don’t shortchange yourself by being impatient. I’ll definitely go back. My hair looked fabulous and seems healthier now than before I went there.

Keisha hooked me up! Clean facility. I used a groupon and felt I got the royal treatment. My hair (natural) never felt so healthy! I got a wash, cut, deep conditioner and a flat iron (no burning smell I usually get when the Dominican shop does my hair). Without groupon I’m not sure I would hv found Keisha even though she is 10 min walk from home. Her regular prices are hefty but I might have to bite the bullet bc no one has ever done such a great job on my natural hair. I had an extra groupon and gifted to my cuz for twists and Keisha did a beautiful job! I plan to have her twist my hair next. Thank you, Keisha! You did a beautiful job.

I decided to give Knaps a try after I purchased a Groupon to get a wash, deep condition, flat iron and trim for $ 39…quite the deal. I had been wearing a wash and go for about a week prior to the appointment, so I was unsure how Keisha, my stylist, was going to react. I should mention that I have A LOT of hair and most stylists are taken aback when they see it. This didn’t bother Keisha one bit, or at least I didn’t notice. The wash was great. She really got in there and cleaned my scalp. But what really set the whole service off was the flat ironing!!! I don’t know what kind of flat iron she used, but at the end, my hair was LAYED!!! I could not have been happier with how my hair turned out. I told her I would gladly pay the full price for this service. Only knocking off one star because of the wait. My appointment was at 3p, but she didn’t start working on me until about 3:30p. That’s not enough to turn me away… I will definitely be back.

I purchased the Groupon voucher and booked my appointment with Keisha. She did a wash, condition and two strand twist on my daughter’s hair and we both love the results. Keisha was very nice and informative and based on this experience I would go back again for her services. Hopefully this is a continued relationship.

I used my Groupon today & my stylist Keisha was on time for my appointment she also gave me some good advice on how to take care of my natural hair. The place is kept clean & classy I will definitely visit it again in the future.

Today was my first time at this establishment and I definitely plan on attending more often.
I called the shop last night about an hour before they closed to book an appointment. I told the person on the other end that this is my first time visiting the shop, I would like 2 strand twists and wondered if they could recommend me to somewhere who is experienced in that department.
My sister transitioned from cornrows to 2 strand twists so I, the big brother wanted to try it out.
I arrived on time (10:00) and was greeted by the shop owner Keisha and a barber. A few minutes later, I was in the chair and was getting my hair done.
I appreciate the care that was shown and taken by Keisha. I told her that I was looking for a new style that would repair damage done unto me by past stylists and my own from not being properly self educated on how to take care of my natural hair. That is when Keisha came to the rescue lol and was promptly educated me on the steps that needed to be taken to reduce breakage and keep your hair growing such as drinking plenty of water, eating plenty of greens, taking in a lot of protein, as well as treating your hair with protein treatments.
Vanessa H., is absolutely right, «you get what you pay for, because it is well worth it.»
I don’t agree with the other reviews concerning the owners attitude. I had a pleasant experience.

I loved the salon the minute I walked in. It was spacious, warm and simply delightful. When I spoke to the owner about what to do with my hair she was honest and helpful. I walked out with a fierce color in my short hair and I cannot wait till I return in a few months to get a twist out. If you want good service and professionalism this is the place for you.

I went here for the first time last week for loc maintenance and a pin-​up style. The scheduling was straight forward, the lady who scheduled was nice. She called to confirm the appointment I wanted and called the day before as a reminder. My hair was done by Marsha who was nice, personable and talented. What I liked most is that she didn’t come across judgmental about the unkept state of my hair (I just had a baby, it hasn’t been done in a while) and she took her time to do it despite being tired and it extending past closing hours.
I went out of town with the style that I got and everyone (friends, strangers, TSA, etc) commented continuously on how awesome my hair was. Even a week later and slightly broken in, I’m still getting compliments all day everyday. Long story short, let Marsha style you. I checked out her Instagram after my appointment and she is very talented. I intend to return.
I found the salon to be spacious, clean, and comfortable. The décor was beautiful. The other patrons were very nice and made it a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. This was a plus for me as the environment would have immediately turned me off. (I really don’t like hair salons, btw.)
4 stars, only because the prices are higher than other local services. I polled my loc’d coworkers long ago about what they pay to maintain their hair. But, idk, maybe it’s worth it. You get what you pay for.

The owner is so disrespectful and unprof. I booked a 10am appt w/​my diminican lady, do you knw the owner shows up at 11am to open the shop. Mind you i asked the owner what time she would open the shop. When i ask’d her what happened she replied its hee shop and she can open up whatever time she wanted. This feline caused me to miss my flight. I will miss my dominican chick she was the best but this place will never get a copper penny of mine!

Seriously I am writing this review and trying not to freak out at the same time. I have been to Knaps before and I love Marcia, she is really wonderful. My only complaints before was that sometimes I had to wait a long time before being seen and the expected long block of time you need to set aside for an appointment but what happened today makes me think that I need to find another salon. About two weeks to a week and a half ago I walked into the salon and asked if they would be open on Columbus Day, I made it a point to not assume or not if they would open and asked. I spoke to two individuals, the second person actually looked in the computer at the front, I also asked if Marcia would be in to do my hair because she is nice and does my hair well when I come in. I was told yes they would be open and yes Marcia would be there to do my hair so I left the salon with an appointment for 1 pm on Monday. Flash forward to today, I receive a message at 5:39 pm, stating that for whatever reason that I had an appointment for Monday with Marcia but that they would be closed and also that Marcia would not be there until Thursday and I should call and reschedule. What! The whole reason why I made the appointment was that I’m going back to work on Tuesday and wanted to get my hair done beforehand and I couldnt make it to any salon on Saturday. So now I’m in a situation where I am gonna pray that I can find someplace on Sunday or Monday that will not totally mess up my hair so that I can look my best for the first day of my career. I still can’t believe that! The people manning the front area should know when the shop is closed and when it is not and if the requested stylist will be in. Although the salon is less than 2 blocks from my home, I’m gonna find somewhere else, I need to know that I will have the appointment that everyone agreed on.

but do yourself a favor and view them so you can get the REAL gist of how this salon runs. I’ve been tired of going to the local salons and getting inconsistent results, so i tried a salon that a reputation tied to its name and ever since i tried this shop I’ve been consistently going there. with my stylist summer, she has been nursing my natural hair back to health. sad thing is that she left, as soon a i got attached to her and work :/​these are not Dominican hair salon prices lol, but you get what you pay for! even as a college student on a tight budget, I’ve managed to rearrange my expenses because it is well worth it.

The owner Keisha… Is the extremely RUDE. I asked her why I was being charged $ 3 extra dollars to use my credit card. She was extremely nasty and said that she tells people the first time that the come and it is also on the miniature sign behind my head typed in a 5pt font. I was shocked by her attitude and I told her that I wasn’t aware of it and it may help if she let people know upfront. She yelled at me and snap her head around and said «I told you the first time!».
Hmmm…I explained again that she didn’t …I am very aware of where my money is being spent. She persisted being crude. She then told me to never come back and slammed the door on my back! Literally, got out of her seat and slammed the door in my back as i was leaving. Don’t go there! I feel so sorry for her stylists. They probably miss out on so much money and great customer because of her lack of respect for customers and arrogance. Also, the reason why there are so many reviews on Unilocal around the same time period is because she offered 20 percent services. Too bad. She lost an awesome customer!
Review before my 2^nd experience:
The salon has a nice atmosphere. They accept credit cards but not that the tip on a card so make sure you bring cash. I like the salon flow… You won’t spend your entire day at the salon for a simple service which is what I like. They will make the right suggestions for your hair but won’t pressure you.

There is nothing here that is a lie. FACT: There was not a mention of the $ 3 charge until after you charged me. FACT: You were RUDE — if someone asks you where their hard earned money is going — why respond by snapping at your customer telling them «I told you the first time you came» depsite them telling you that this was their first time hearing it. FACT: YOU SLAMMED THE DOOR ON MY BACK and TOLD ME TO NEVER COME BACK! — - Its so unfortunate that you selected to act in a childish manner. I am quite sure that this is not the first time you have been rude to a customer and over stepped boundaries.

This is my second time writing this review, hopefully it will make it on to this web site this time.
I tried this salon because I wanted to try something closer to home. I arrived at the salon around 9:50 a.m. To my surprise the salon gates where down after being told by Keisha that she opens the salon around 9:00 a.m. with the stylists arriving at 10:00 a.m. Keisha arrives around 10:05 with a guy, who opens the gates. I am told to go inside and have a seat.
At 10:15 a.m., I am told that my stylist must be stuck on the train. Finally, my stylist, Ashante’, arrives at 10:26 a.m. She introduces herself and tell me to go downstairs. I have locs so I carry my own rods when I want a rod set. Ashante told me to leave the rods upstairs at her station. I should have left at this point.
While Ashante’ washed my my hair, I asked her how long she had been doing hair. Her response was «my first love is make-​up and while I was in school they convinced me that I could do hair, too». I should have left at this point. She does give a GOOD shampoo though.
It took Ashante’ almost two hours to twist my new growth. I should have left at this point.
After emerging from the basement, I am now seated at Ashante’s station and she DOES NOT know how to set my locs on rods. She asks the only other stylist in the salon, Marcia, to help her and Marcia’s immediate reply was «NO». I should have left at this point.
Marcia was able to give me a tight rod set and the side that Ashante worked on, the rods were falling off my head. The same guy that opened the gates at 10:05 a.m. returns to the salon and see the two stylist working on my hair and notes the «teamwork» that is going on on my head. After seeing the look on my face, he just turns away.
At the end of this fiasco, I am given a bill and asked by the guy, who says his name is Glen, how my service was. I tell him of my utter disgust with the service of Ashante’ and the rude attitude that came from Marcia and he asks me what could be done to make my experience with the salon better.
I tell Glen that he could make my bill go away but he has already swiped my credit card.
After getting home, I realize that I left my bag of rods at the salon, so now I must go back.
I took the rods out of my hair four days later and I had curls at the ends of my locs which are just past my shoulders.
I call the salon about nine days later to tell Glen that I am going to pull op outside the salon and I would appreciate it if he could just come outside with the bag. Glen tells me that he is downstairs in the basement doing work on the salon and that I should come inside.
Maybe three minutes later I pull up outside the salon and call to ask Glen to if he could just run out to my car as I am sitting right in front of the salon. With an attitude, he wants me to risk getting a parking summons to come inside the salon.
I gave a one star rating because I could not give it NO stars.
