great selection, reasonable prices for a small non chain hardware store, good friendly service

My mom loves Doody. She is constantly talking about it being her go to place for home items. I find them to be meh. I went in a few weeks ago and found some great pant hangers. I decided to return last week to buy a toilet tissue and hand towel holder. The selection was pretty small and the items looked old. I decided on two items and went to the register where I noticed some items, that I was going to buy at Home Depot, on sale. So I went to the display area where the items were below a picture of the sale ad. I made my choices and went to the register and none of the items were on sale?
After a protracted back and forth with someone on the floor, I was made to understand that although the ad said one thing there were items specifically available for the sale that was not readily apparent to the customer. When I asked how a customer would know that, I was told you would ask me. I was peeved. I spent a good bit of time making my choices and waiting in line and then had to wait another 15 minutes for a tutorial on why even though the items are in the ad picture they’re not really on sale?! Wtf! I politely handed her all of the extra items I had picked up, paid for what I went for and left.
After thinking about it, I realized that I won’t do business with a company that participates in bait and switch. So I took everything back this morning and went to Home Depot. At least, they are reliable and honor their circulars. I may pay more, but I don’t feel icky afterwards. As other Unilocalers have said, their customer service leaves a lot to be desired.

I am addicted to this place! It’s become my «go-​to» for home improvement, which for me is a never-​ending project. The staff regulars know everything from soup to nuts and make great suggestions. Merchandise is always in stock. The prices are great and parking is right out front. You just can’t ask for more. And one more thing. Be sure to check out the sale items near the registers. You will find surprisingly great deals on household staples like dish and laundry detergent.

I love this place and have been coming here since before I can remember. There’s a parking lot in front of the store, but it’s kind of small so I always park in their second lot, which is right across the street (if you park in that lot, you can enter the store through their side entrance instead of having to walk around).
The store is spacious and has a very organized layout, which makes shopping so much easier. They have a huge hardware section, which includes paint and painting supplies. I love the home section, where you can buy organizing bins, garbages, garbage/​recycling bags, cleaning supplies, full length mirrors, decorative items, furniture, bathroom items, etc. Everything they sell is for a great price.
In the spring they have a huge garden section, which I love. Excellent variety as far as types of soil, pots, plants, and seeds.
The employees are always really friendly and helpful and I can’t remember a time where I’ve had to wait on a long line at the register.

Very helpful staff. No long lines. And they have everything from A to Z. Why go any where else.

The store is well stocked, employees are friendly, and actually know the inventory! It’s organized and clean.
In the paint department, Eddie Strzelcki was extremely helpful to us, when some gallons we bought were defective from the original brand. He was able to contact a product representative and make the return process easy for us– took a big load off for us, as we were mid project and couldn’t have had time to do it ourselves.
Their managers were equally pleasant and we are definitely regulars in the store now, buying all sorts of things from plants to household supplies.
Great to see a large operation like this run so well!

This place has everything for your home! Great place to go for people who love to do DIY projects. I’d say it’s a little mix between bed bath and beyond and Home Depot but much cheaper and of course, on a smaller scale. If you have a question, don’t hesitate to ask, the staff here are super friendly. Every time I go to this place I spend at least an hour to two hrs. It’s the kind of place where you go in and see something you never knew you needed until just then. I especially like how they cut the wood for you. They take their time in measuring and cut the wood with smiles on their faces: D

Wow. Wow. Wow. The employees are all knowledgable about every product sold in the store. Even the young girls. (Sorry all of you woman’s libbers but i didn’t expect to hear a 20 something female know about the various products used to cut a heating pipe whose temperature may go above 250 degrees). Also impressive was a sales person (yes another young girl) answering my question about white light bulbs vs. Yellowish bulbs. Another question about ice salt was answered by comparing the cost of a 25 pound back vs the cost of a 15 pound bag. Try getting anyone in Lowe’s or Home Depot to answer any questions let alone answer them knowledgeably. My compliments to the guy who hires and trains the staff at Doody.

Great hardware store! It has everything that I need at a reasonable price. Yesterday I was there and the employee guided me to the right aisle and advised me about the products. It is not too far from me and will come back. I would definitely recommend this store.

I returned to Doodys yesterday with the items that I wanted to return. I had the opportunity to speak to the store manager & told him of the terrible experience that I had last week.
I was assured that he would deal with the employee so no other customer would receive the same kind of treatment.
Doody’s has been in business for 90 years & has a stellar reputation. I stand by my first review of the store. Doody’s is what a neighborhood store should be. I highly recommend shopping at Doody’s. You’ll get treated like family.

Best hardware store around. Definitely competitively priced with Lowe’s and the Home Depot stores in the area. Pretty much every worker knows where everything is as well, which is nice because you’ll usually have to ask cashiers where things are if you can’t find them. It’s a little bit of a pain to get items that are in display cases because the workers have to open the cases and have to bring the items (usually hand tools) straight to the counter, but that’s a small complaint. The place has been around since the beginning of time, so I doubt they would have made it this long if they weren’t top notch. I’ve been going here forever, I’m in here at least a couple times a month, and I always tell people to go here.

I searched Doody’s Unilocal reviews for any mention of the lumber department cutting wood to size… just 2 out of 22 reviews. So the typical Unilocaler won’t mind that Doody’s no longer provides that service. My husband went in there today to have a board cut to 28 inches and was told that they got rid of the big saw. He’s a DIY-​er so this is a loss for him. He’ll probably never go in there again since Lowe’s will cut wood and carries a good selection of everything else. IMO the store is still a good choice for hard-​to-​find items and quality brands.

I have been shopping at Doody’s my entire life, and before I was born my parents/​grandparents shopped there. This mom and pop shop has always done right by me. The employees are full of useful information and have helped me with countless problems. Keep up the good work Doody’s!

I’ve been shopping at Doody for over 12 years now. They carry tons of how goods, from bathroom knick knacks to building supplies. They have some of the cheapest priced specialty lightbulbs anywhere! I come in from time to time just to look around and see if I could use anything… and I always seem to find something. And the staff is phenomenal… from all departments. Doody is awesome!

Love it here. It’s right by my house and I will be coming here forever. My parents always came here to buy just about anything from furniture to wood to sand to glue to paint. They have all colors of paint and even a little painting center that will help advise you on your home projects.
The service is so friendly here, it’s a neighborhood thing.
The store is also huge, like a costco because it’s literally half store and half warehouse of furniture and wood.
They sell flowers in the summer and they’re right outside of the store. It’s great for a Mother’s Day gift if you’re on your way.
It’s one of the few local businesses left at the hub on 17^th and avenue Y. Id rather be here than lowes or Home Depot. There isn’t really one near sheepshead bay anyway except for the one by kings plaza or more up north. Come here for great service and good prices.

Everyone needs a neighbourhood hardware/​houseware store to make some keys, buy some screws, a few tools and other odds and ends for the home. Doody’s is just that Sheepshead Bay neighbourhood store.
Prices are reasonable for a whole host of products from soaps, paint, toilet cleaners, lights, backyard furniture, soil, batteries, heaters, sump pumps, whatever you need.
But this isn’t a home depot, so if you need specific or speciality parts, tools, etc., you may not find it at Doody’s. But it’s worth a try. With a private parking lot, drive over and see if you can support a good small business.

I was in the need of common home supplies such as a shower caddy, closet rack, shoe rack, etc. After browsing through the Home Depot and ikea website I figured from their wide variety of my needed items these would be the right stores to visit.
But boy was I wrong!
After visiting Home Depot and ikea I realized that they do not have anything in stock, (they had one of each of the items I needed, meanwhile I website shows 15+ items), and the workers were not knowledgable and did not seem excited to help me at all.
I decided to go to doody on sheepshead right by where I live and had the biggest smile on my face while shopping. They had everything that I needed, a huge variety of different items and the staff was great.
I highly recommend this store to anyone, don’t waste your time at Home Depot and ikea! The prices are great and the workers are helpful and happy.

If you need anything home-​related you’ll be able to find it here, from kitchenware, home tools to gardening needs. I also prefer Doody because their prices are usually lower than the big chains, such as Home Depot or Lowes. Whenever I’ve had to find something I need for my home, I’ve always been able to find it here. Never have I left empty handed. It’s also great that they have a parking lot and that Stop and Shop is right across the street, which makes it convenient to kill 2 birds with 1 stone!
The only grip I do have about Doody is that some of the customer service isn’t the best. I’m not saying they don’t help you out, but some individuals here can have a better attitude when offering help. I feel some employees have an attitude of «…can you leave me alone?» Like I said, it’s some, not all of the employees. Other than that, it’s a good local store!

Doody is a great store, I mean common, with a name like Doody, how can it be bad? every time I find myself in this store, I end up walking out with loads of inexpensive, price can’t be beat merchandise.
They obviously don’t have as vast a selection as Home Deport or Lowe’s but, for a private store, they’re selection is impressive.
The staff is kind, knowledgeable and helpful. They surely are professionals who know their trade.
They are 100% my go to place for paints. They have unbeatable, if not cheap prices, and that makes me come back.
They always have coupons and promotions if you’re a coupon queen. Even if you’re not, its great to get a good steal.
Doody is the closest major hardware store in my proximity, and definitely my number one choice. They have never disappointed, they always have what I’m looking for.
