Waited over an hour and 15 minutes for 2 Wurst on a bed of red cabbage that could not possibly have been more than a third of a cup in volume. The currywurst was fairly tasty, but very small, and pre-​sliced for some reason. The other Wurst that I ordered was made from lamb, the name escapes me. It was way over done, dry and flavorless. Dipping sauces were unremarkable. This restaurant may be good for beer, I did not get any of this because I can’t have beer on my current diet.

Worst spot to go to. I would prefer to walk down the street to Black Forest. They need to learn what appetizers mean and bring them out early, before the food.
We sat on a slow Friday and the beer came fast (please change the pipes, FYI), but the food took nearly 30−45mins for apps. We had to flank down the waitress in order to find out when our food would come. And then, they brought everything… Sad.
I can understand that locals visit and they like to sip drinks for a long time. But if you don’t check on ur tables, how would u know?
Anyway, we got the food and that’s when she decided to talk with us and ask if everything, that another server just put down, was okay. Mid conversation another group Sat down and she went straight to them to say hi. No exit strategy!
Please avoid, not worth the time if u want a meal and drinks. Only good for drinks!

Where do I start. I am soooo disappointed with my experience. I went on a very slow night, the tables were sticky, the servers just paced the store not making eye contact, and worse still the food took 40 mins. 40 mins for 2 orders of pretzels and a small order of potato dumplings, oh and uncooked fish. We had to request our server several times, just to ask what was taking so long. The waitress seemed disinterested if you weren’t a regular. When we finally got our check, we tipped her fairly she complained that it wasn’t enough, we’re cheap and not to come back, after throwing the money on the table.
Totally disrespectful and lazy service, food was sub-​par at best. I will never go back and I discourage anyone else from stopping there either.

Atmosphere convivial, chatted up a stranger or two, which the place seems designed to encourage. Service was pretty low-​qual. But Hey, they buy the right beer. And while my first choice was no longer available, Ient a different route, not unhappy with the choice. Got some picked herring which was not bad, but not exactly exciting (if you’re gonna serve something unusual, at least try to convert folks… I’ve long been a pickled fish eater, so maybe I’m a snob?). Good butter/​bread.
Not jonesing to return, but would pop in if touring around friends in the future.

Bartender charged my credit card 4 times for over $ 300.
Not to mention that $ 8 for a half-​assed plate of French fries is atrocious.
Won’t be coming back! :(

I’ve been living down the block for a long while and needed some good beer, so I go to Der Schwarze koln. I must say, the draft selection is the best but the newer and bigger beer garden ON THE NEXT BLOCK have wayyy better food. I hate that this bar has so many spoiled kids running around like its a playground, but this neighborhood is gentrified and full of entitlement. The scene is cool here too aside from days when parents let their kids make messes when grown folks like myself and my friends want to drink and be merry. The staff is alright too, but if it isn’t the spanish guy or the black happy kid working, I’d usually go to the next beer garden for better vibes and music selection.

Confession. On winter Saturdays, when we don’t have anywhere else to go that night, we like to drink beer in the afternoon and then go home to Netflix. So, we had a delicious Weihenstephaner Kirstin and a pilsner at Die Stammkneipe at about 3 pm. There are lots of windows, so it was sunny. We didn’t have to fight for the couch, the server was knowledgeable and super nice, it wasn’t lonely (a table of folks were drinking from glass boots nearby) and the beer was great. Only one visit, but it was perfect.

So I’ve been told that they changed owners a few years ago and it shows. I used to love coming to this place for beer. Every time I was in town, I would make it a point to come here and get a beer. It used to have such a great vibe and a ton of good German beer. Sadly, that is no more. The beer list is now kind of pathetic and just the whole vibe is just ‘meh’ now.
We came on a Thursday night (I know, benefit of the doubt that it wasn’t a weekend and I shouldn’t expect any less) recently and was one of two groups there that night. There were a few servers working that night, but they seemed to want to stay behind the bar most of the night.
I felt like the servers rushed us out even though we were prepared to drink to the bottom of the barrel, and the fact that it was a little past midnight and we still had a few more hours before their posted closing time. The hours on Unilocal showed that they were opened until 2 a.m. There was one server in particular that kept coming to our table saying something to the girls in our group, in which they found to be weird. He apologized about them closing early, but just his behavior we just found to be really weird.
What a shame. Sadly, I doubt I’ll be coming back here again because it’s just not the same anymore.

Never have I ever had a more weirder experience at a bar than I did here. I remember liking this place the last time I was in NY but things sure have changed. Stopped here on a Thursday night close to midnight and immediately felt like I was being rushed out already even though there were still people at the bar.
I ordered a drink from a person who said he was the manager and technically he’s not working today but will help us anyways. Not even 5 minutes after getting my drink, the «manager» came back to our table with a rag and poured some of my beer onto his rag and said «oops, I spilled some of your beer» but said it in a way as if he was doing me a favor. I was seriously so confused and didn’t know what to say or do because I never had anything close to this happen before. Another 5 minutes goes by and he came to tell us they’re closing. Never again will I be back even though they do have a good selection of German beer.

Die Stammkneipe was a travesty. When we arrived, it wasn’t very crowded (yet) but the wait staff appeared overwhelmed.
The first mishap was when my companion asked our server if the cider was sweet. She said no. WRONG. It was quite sweet.
We also ordered chorizo with pickles. After about 40 minutes, and upon noticing those who arrived after we did were already eating, we inquired about our food.
Then I spotted another server scoping out the other tables… grab a basket off an adjacent four-​top, walk to the kitchen area, pivot, and walk back to us with «our order.»
We would have let it go except one of the Chorizo sticks had a bite taken out. A bite! A big bite! When we pointed it out to the server, she tried to convince us that it wasn’t a bite. Ridiculous because it had teeth marks in it!
They brought us another chorizo stick, but we were so skived and annoyed at that time, we immediately paid and left.
Stay away. Stay far away!

I wasn’t expecting much given the Unilocal ratings, but I was pleasantly surprised. The pretzel dogs were delicious. The bread was fresh, hot out of the oven! The sausage variations were small but delicious, and the draft beer choices were truly tasty. I love wheat beers and tried two kinds. It tasted like honey and also a slight unique citrous flavor. I was impressed. We sat outside when it was perfect temperature. It was breezy. It was a perfect for a casual catch up with a friend after a long day at work.

Fantastic German draft beer selection. We shared a bunch of the smaller plate items and sausages. Everything was tasty and the food came out pretty quick. Minus a star because the Mets game was on so comically loud that we had to yell at each other across the table and our waitress wasn’t as attentive as we would have liked but otherwise a really solid dinner.

Love this place. Absolutely love it… EXCEPT one thing. What’s with the lack of air conditioning during Babies & Bier? This is the 3^rd time we have had to abandon ship because the heat was unbearable inside the place. The minute we left it was like stepping out of a sauna. Not very baby friendly in that sense. I really love that this place provides such a wonderfully smart social time for parents but I must say, we won’t be back until the winter months as my baby is still recovering from the heat exposure. :-/

They have a good selection of beer and it’s nice during the summer to come here and sit outside.
The menu is not very extensive, but has some good choices. Though, there really is only one vegetarian option as an entrée, which is the German ravioli. It’s pretty good. But the sides are not.
Also, we really have to flag down the waitress for service here. Kinda annoying! And they try repeatedly to take plates away while we are clearly still eating. Downgrading my 4 stars to 3 stars for this.
Be prepared — cash only and they don’t tell you til the bill comes.
I prefer Black Forest which is just a block away.

This is a pretty good place for a quick bite and some beer. It is not really a beer garden, but more of a German Restaurant. The food actually was really good and inexpensive. I got the cheese sausage which is served with stone ground mustard and a pretzel. I also got there version of fried potatoes (fries) which was a potato pancake, and was very tasty served with a version of applesauce and sour cream. The beer was also reasonably priced, but not a huge tap selection. Also the waitress was very friendly, but she was the only one working so it took a while to get beer and food. It was my first time there so I don’t know if this is always the case, but worth checking out.

I like the idea of this place more than the actual experience of coming here. Great beers, good bread and sausage, outdoor, seating, conveniently located? Sign me up!
The beers are fine. Good, even! The food is ok but kind of weirdly priced. The seating, especially outside, is bum-​burning my uncomfortable. The service is friendly but slow and inattentive.
Basically, if you want this kind of atmosphere, walk a block and go to Black Forest, which does everything better except have empty seats. Since it’s better.

The restaurant is located in a very vivid area. The restaurant doesn’t appear as a typical German though. The menu isn’t very resourceful and doesn’t offer a lot of traditional German dishes. Furthermore, the dishes don’t taste and look authentic.
But at least the beer is real German and is definitely worth it and reasonable priced.
Just the beer, also the service was very good and friendly.

This place is wonderful. I rented it out on a Saturday from 11 – 1 for my sister’s bridal shower. The interior is rustic and beautiful. They opened a half hour before so that i could set up, too. I dont live in BK anymore and was able to do logistics with Randi, the owner, via email and they were very kind and accommodating, and responded quickly. Food and service at the time of the event were wonderful as well. Its lovely that the owner and a lot of the staff are german, made us feel at home. Love that it’s just plain olé rustic and not overly kitchy and ‘german’. If i still lived in Bk, i would go here all the time, great vibes.

Fun spot to hang with friends on winter weekends. I really wish they had a patio for the summer though. Good selection of beer and gets very crowded with families and babies on the weekends. As an avid fusball fan, they gotta step up their game. The table is so old and the ball often gets stuck and you have to wiggle the table in odd ways to get it out.

Another glaring example of all that has gone wrong with Fort Greene. A neighborhood that once prided itself on a culture of sharing and inter-​ethnic harmony is now an environment where its new (read: gentrified) population does not have an iota of emotional intelligence.
Example, the waitress /​manager opening today. She’s getting dropped off by her boyfriend this morning to start her shift. My son and I have an appointment with his barber 2 doors down. We idle next to their car. After about a minute I honk once and politely gesture: are you coming out?
Her boyfriend mouths «what the fuck do you want?»
Stunned, I roll my window down and say «excuse me, I am asking if you’re leaving»
At this point the staff-​woman of @diestammkneipe shouts «calm the fuck down.»
This exchange-​full of disrespect and non-​communal spirit-​is the type that is now rife in Fort Greene. It’s seeped in a non-​understanding and blatant disregard for the essence of the community in which such establishments & its staff have colonized.
Drink and eat heartily at an establishment which shits on members of the community.

I love Der Shwarze Kolner! Whether it’s outdoors in the nice weather, or taking over a table indoors in the colder months, this place kicks butt!
The only negative is it is cash only, but hey, if you’re reading this you can now plan ahead.
They have great German beer and snacks, so I’m frequently heading here, even though I don’t live in the area anymore. It’s awesome for big groups or for just a few friends.
They’re kid friendly, which may be a surprise to some, but as nights go on, the kids seem to vanish.
Always go with a liter mug. You’ll feel like you’re at a Brooklyn Oktoberfest!

We stumbled into this spot to partake in a cold libation after attending a recent brisket king competition close by. Had a thirst for a cold beer, and German is one of my favs.
To me it didn’t really look like a German styled spot but more like a place that used to be a diner or other restaurant that they took over. Not really authentic looking as I like my German beer hall type spots to look more like one. Decent prices but cash only? For a place that serves up both beer and a full menu of food items taking credit cards is a must.
Way too many bro’s being obnoxiously loud and playing foosball when we were here. Typical Brooklyn hipster skinny jean douchebro’s.
Nice German beer selection on tap though. They even offer Das Boot if you really want to go all the way and drink heavily. Would I come back here again if close by? Sure! I love a good German brew and this place has them.

I had a surprisingly good experience here. I have always steered clear of this place because it looks so dark from the outside, but it actually really fun and the food is tasty! They have kind of a picnic atmosphere inside, checkered table clothes, big windows, big screen TV playing soccer, cute little white flowers on the table. surprisingly cute
Most of this review is about the food… I don’t drink beer, but the folks at my table seemed pretty pumped about the beer selection. I drank gruner, which was pretty good
I also NOT expecting much from the food as most beer garden food is pretty gross. I had the pretzel with the traditional cheese dip (Obatza) and the plain bratwurst. the pretzel was okay. The thick portion was tasty, but the skinny part was a little too dry. The Obatza was tasty… like a 50’s style Midwestern cheese dip. The brat was really tasty… simple perfectly spiced and perfectly sized. The bun really stole the show; it was soooo good… freshly baked, and perfectly sized… tasted kind of like a pretzel bun. I wish the pretzel was as good as the bun. The other folks in my party had the sausage with cheddar… it wasn’t nearly as tasty as the brat but still pretty good good.
All in all great place to meet up with friends and chill with some tasty sausages.

I have been here a few times love it everytime. The outdoor seating is great the staff is the best! The beer is German :)

Der Schwarze Kolner if you can ever remember the name is an awesome spot to recommend for some drinks.
The reason why I put the quotation marks up (in the review and in person) is because as many people have pointed out there really isn’t any real outdoor area which has become the standard (SEE WHAT I DID THERE?) of beer gardens. Though they do have seats around the outside of the establishment on nice days. Fort Greene is beautiful and it’s a lovely corner to take it all in.
A problem that others have pointed out, IS THAT YOU HAVE TO SCREAM TO HAVE A CONVERSATION. The acoustics are terrible here. However if you can get past the noise level which sometimes isn’t all that bad and the fact there isn’t any true outdoor seating, then you can have a pretty rad time.
First off I love the beer selection. They have some bitchin brews and in some big boy sizes. Get me there on a good head, with a stomach ready for some beer, my drinking cap on and order me a big boy hefeweizen. I’ll down that quick!
The food isn’t the most amazing but I think it’s solid. Typical German bar food but there is one thing I must sell you on. Their meatloaf sandwich. Comes with egg on top. It’s really good. I’m making myself hungry right now.
Filling up on food and beer. Time to burn some calories playing some intense games of foosball. I warn you, I don’t play around. Getting too close to the table there buddy, not my fault you got impaled by the rod.
Come on through to… this place. Just stay away from me when I’m playing foosball.
