I’ve been in this part of Brooklyn a long time. I’ve walked by this place probably a thousand times more often than I’ve walked inside. Tonight I was reminded why. I was digging my car out of an igloo created by 2 feet of fallen and plowed snow. I shoveled for about an hour. I cleared about ¼ of what I needed, managed to get the door open, and gave it a quick start. Now I wanted something hot, a beer, and to watch some of the Arizona /Carolina playoff game. Cody’s was literally the closest place. On paper, it’s the dream: clam chowder, Guinness on tap, and about 20 flat-screens. Unfortunately, in order, the Guinness was far from the best, the clam chowder, while hot, was bleh, probably due to the bare minimum amount of clams to actually let it be defined as clam chowder, and the flat screens were not true high def, but rather that middle ground weird def where everyone looks squashed. And I remembered the handful of times I’d been here before it was a similar experience: mediocre. People work here who will serve you food and alcohol and you can watch TV. You can’t say anything bad about this place, but you really can’t sing it’s praises. It’s too bad because honestly I want to really like this place. It’s been here a long time and on a night like tonight the locals give it the old school Brooklyn feel that is too quickly disappearing.

This was a damn friendly bar to watch some NFL and drink beer. I got talking to just about every table of people around us as lovely denver and their reserve quaterback very satisfyingly held off the evil patriots. I shall return. I may even try the tasty looking fried snacks.

came here over the weekend to meet up with friends who were watching football there. it’s kind of your basic sports bar, but i liked that it wasn’t obnoxiously crowded, the waitress was incredibly nice and attentive, the bathroom was old but not disgusting and as long as you ordered something battered and fried, it tasted pretty decent(we had the mozzarella sticks and the nachos — i’d give both a solid B). it’s also in a convenient location, not too far from borough hall. easy to meet up with friends coming from different places.

Was in town for a wedding this weekend, and it was the perfect spot to stop in for some beers/grub both late night and randomly during the middle of the day. Nothing trendy or swanky, just a good old fashioned place to drink.

Tried to stop in after a 12+ hour shift at the hospital. Bartender tells me «I saw you stumble, you need to leave». Hope you close forever.

Good cozy spot! Mozzarella sticks and pizza bread are delicious. Margaritas on the rocks are unexpectedly good. Just one thing I don’t understand how a bill for 2 ppl was so high? $ 63 for 2 appetizers and 4 drinks. When ordering desserts beware — -the waitress was not clear. We thought we were ordering Apple pie on the mode, when it came it was a drink? Weird. I was in the mood for apple pie not Apple cider.

My go to spot if I want to have a relaxing quick drink and watch a sports game while listening to 80s Classic Rock music. The place is never too crowded and the service is great. Very old school pub feel. Great for drinks after work.

The food is at best average. Came here to watch some football, not the best sports bar at all. No refills on drinks and not the best variety of beers on tap. Overall, the experience was ok, I wouldn’t return. Needs a serious bar overhaul, the inside looks like it got stuck in the 1980’s.

So wonderfully normal. Gimmick free. Nothing artisan. But: extremely nice servers/bartenders, above average bar food, and the game you want to watch will inevitably be on. Cobble/Boerum Hill has more than enough gastropubs and local-seasonal-organic-farm-to-table-New American restaurants. Cody’s is thankfully none of these, and better of for it.

I’m going to start out by saying don’t mind that 1 star that I took off, because I love Cody’s. I’ve been living in the area for about 6 years consistently now, but my family was born and raised here. Over the last 4 years, specifically, the neighborhood has been changing drastically with bars opening up catering to the«new local» crowd. By this, I am referring to a certain breed of White person that can only be described as incredibly Whitebread. Yuppie does not do justice to the full essence of the kind of incredibly white person I am referring to. Now, this is not meant disparagingly, as I am «White» as well, but it refers to a certain culture of upper-crust nonsense that has given rise to the term«Gastropub.» Because of this prevailing attitude, more and more bars/restaurants are opening up in the area that consider themselves to be he next best thing since sliced bread. I don’t like it. Cody’s gets 5 stars for being one of the last unpretentious, no frills, no nonsense sports bars left in the Carroll Gardens/Cobble Hill area. They have the NFL package and, let me tell you, Thursdays & Sundays are absolutely packed in here. Yet, despite it all, they still get the beers out fast and cold. So, why the 1 star difference? It has to be the food. Now, don’t get me wrong, the food is good. The food that they offer is not 5 star restaurant quality, but it is certainly on point for what Cody’s is. The offerings, while not slim, feel limited. By this, I mean that their menu could use a serious revamp. Eliminate the odd steak over garlic bread and the dated potato skins. Try offering some more appealing and hearty fare. A more convincing nacho platter wouldn’t hurt, either. Cody’s, I love you.

A pretty standard hole-in-the-wall bar where what you see is what you get. I wouldn’t call this a dive bar, since they keep it clean and light, but it’s nothing too fancy either. And that’s fine with me – this neighborhood has no shortage of fancy, and sometimes it’s nice to have something a little more down home. The selection of draught beers is good, the food is bar food, and the TVs have got all the games on. Since you’ve probably been to a few places like this before, it might feel very comfortable.

I absolutely adore Cody’s. Really. And it pains me greatly to downgrade, but it is time for the menu to step forward into the Millennium. Banish the boring nachos, dump the Dullsville steak which never comes out right. How about a crab cake? Onion rings? A really good plate of nachos with chicken? Sausage and peppers? Homemade guacamole… None of that stuff from Costco? Honestly, the staff, TVs, beer and vibe can do only so much(they are a 10), but the food…

The food is solid enough, but nothing particularly special. They have plenty of flatscreens and the NFL package, so chances are you’ll be able to watch your game. And they’ve got completely overpriced pitchers of beer, even if it’s shit beer($ 18 for Coors Light is not a good deal). In short, it’s a fairly mediocre NYC sports bar. The reasons they earn themselves that fourth star: 1. The staff is great. The waitress who I feel terrible for because she has to navigate around the packed room and get angry fans beer and fried food… she’s awesome. All over everything, attentive and even friendly. 2. They have pitchers of beer, even if they are overpriced. Less and less common around these parts. 3. I once witnessed the Bills execute a successful 4th-quarter comeback here. The Bills winning is enough of a surprise, and this was basically a miracle, and until it happens again, I’m assuming it’s only because we watched it at Cody’s. ______________ Side Note In Case You Were Wondering: I’m actually a Giants fan(although losing 38 – 0 to the fucking Panthers is almost grounds for giving it up). But my lady friend is a Bills fan, which basically makes me a Bills fan when they aren’t playing the Giants. Because she owns me.

Cody’s is that neighborhood sports bar with a surprisingly accomplished kitchen and wide selection of beer, but a few glaring mistakes makes me give them only 3 stars. It’s the perfect spot to come grab a sandwich or burger and a couple of pints while watching a football game on one of 12 TVs, just be careful when springing for one of their beer flights. I’m not sure how these were chosen, but i’m assuming they’re something the bar is trying to promote, yet the beers arrived warm and flat. One of the beers in particular just tasted disgusting and rancid. Although we sent it back without drinking that beer in particular, and the waiter clearly felt badly about it, we still had to pony up $ 16 for the whole flight of 4. Now, I wasn’t expecting it to be free, but maybe half off? Especially considering $ 16 is an absurd markup for four 4oz samples of beer. I can see coming back and getting a good spot early to watch football because the whole neck-craning thing was not a good look for 1.5 hours. I also would like to eat another one of their tasty, juicy burgers, but I will be sticking with beers I know I like, and hope they’re served cold and carbonated!

My boyfriend took me here for a bite to eat before we went to go see a movie. I ordered fish and chips and he had chicken fingers and fries. I cannot say no to anything deep fried, especially chicken fingers! They also have a moderate selection of beers and an open bar. I love the décor and the cultural vibe. However, this is very much a man’s den. There are TV’s jammed into every corner with a different sports channel on! This place is pretty cozy and I would actually like to come back, relax and watch a game like one of the boys! :)

My friends that went to Boston University come to this place to watch BU hockey games since they’re one of the few bars in NYC that carry NESN on their tv’s. They make an excellent burger and always have affordable beer prices. The waitresses are beyond nice(while firmly entrenched in the 1960’s, they are always out to accomodate you). Great neighborhood bar. Just a bit of a walk from the 4 train at Borough Hall, but worth the trek.

This is an easy bar to love despite the fact that, on the surface, the food is standard bar fare(plus some specials) and the beers are nothing to rave about. The reasons this place is great are two: 1-the servers/owners/bartenders are so nice, I instantly and always feel like I’m at home, and somebody cares if I’m happy. There are no pretensions or attitudes here. You get the feeling a couple of retired cops and their wives opened the place and they are happy as heck to be there, waiting on YOU. 2-the tv’s are plenty, and the staff will bend over backwards to make sure you get to see what you want. None of this annoying«everyone is watching basketball today» garbage. If you want to see the bowling from Des Moines, they will put it up for you. 3-also the burger is respectable, as well as the onion soup. I haven’t eaten everything on the menu, but I suspect it is all decent. Go once, stay for one beer, and see if you don’t feel like family. I love this place, and they deserve your business.
