As a kid I came to the«markets» with my dad for him to get wholesale prices on plants and gardening supplies, and for me to eat a pickle fresh out of a barrel. Jim R is right, now the Brooklyn Terminal Market is a shadow of its former self. I still find that it’s a good source for reasonably-priced garden stuff, at A. Visconti and Brooklyn Plantology by Lapide. Nowadays they’re just like retail stores with shopping carts and all. Parking inside the market can be hard to find on busy days. The map of tenants on the market’s website is helpful.

Place rating: 3 Brooklyn, NY
The Brooklyn Terminal Market is a shadow of its former existence. It was created in 1941 by the NYC Department of Markets [ now the NYC Department of Ports and Terminals. It was meant as a replacement for the Wallabout Market when that market was demolished to expand the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The Wallabout was the second largest wholesale fruit and produce market in the world. The Brooklyn Terminal Market also known as the Canarsie Market to some was never made it back into the list. Farmers Square was a component of both the Brooklyn Terminal Market and the Wallabout. Farmers from Long Island and other area brought there produce to the market and often spent the night. Farmers Square at the Brooklyn Terminal is now a shopping center that includes a BJ’S Wholesale club. The market itself no longer serves its original purpose and is the home of a diverse group of wholesale food providers as well as watermelon purveyors and pickle producers. It is a great source of garden plants and flowers and Christmas trees in season.
