Brooklyn General Barber

I think they have changed their name, so this is prob a duplicate post:
I have been going to this place on and off for the last 3 years, it has changed over the last 6 months or so, actually for the better. The hair cuts are better quality, but the customer service could use some improvement. I went there today to get a hair cut, place was completely empty, I mean no one was getting a hair cut. This guy walks up to me and says, oh we have a wait, did you call ahead and put your name down?
My thoughts are, you are completely empty, I am here; If this is my business, I dont turn away money… Plus, having people wait give an a appearance of an active thriving business.
Well anyways, I went to this new barber that just opened on 8^th, it was actually very nice, a little more on price but the service was very nice.

It gets one star just because I had numerous good experiences here in the past. Now I sat for an hour while one barber didn’t take any customers and the other barber had testy exchanges with him. Uncomfortable sitting there so I left. Also fix your system of calling ahead. Not working for you. Either you have an appointment book or it’s first come first serve.

More of a barbershop feel than a salon feel, caters equally to both the crazier hipster hairdos and more conservative traditional looks. They do not take appointments so call 30 minutes before and asked to be put on the list or chill for a few minutes.
Here’s the catch: BE CAREFUL WHO CUTS YOUR HAIR! Tamir is one of the best barbers in Brooklyn… but the other stylists at Brooklyn General are not very good. Tamir is very talented, the thing I guess that impresses me the most is the speed at which he cuts. He works probably twice as fast as any other barber I’ve gone to but has never messed up my hair or ever nicked me. Also every haircut I’ve gotten from him has grown out wonderfully. Yuri was also pretty good but he no longer works there. The few occasions I’ve let the other BGB folk cut my hair I’ve been really disappointed and in one instance it was visibly uneven and a friend had to re-​cut my hair when I got home.
The only other negative thing I’ve noticed would be a slight general sense of tension in the air. Part of it may be uncomfortable waiting area and the awkward explantion of «the list» system the increasingly annoyed staff has to recite everytime a new client pops in the door. Maybe it’s the forced small talk? But for some reason I feel a lot of nervous energy from the newer staff, perhaps there’s some tension with the management? Whatever. Frankly I don’t care. When I need a crisp, reliable haircut at the last minute it’s hard to find anywhere better than here.
Hmm, what else? Oh, awesome chill reggae in the background and it’s cash only. Around $ 30.

well i never actually got my hair cut, but my one experience in this place tells me id never let them cut my hair.
i walked in at 1pm and place already had a full lineup (understandable). I was told to come back at 3pm after putting my name on the list. I came back at 2:50pm and was told that they underestimated the times needed for each haircut, and that I should come back at 4pm. That was a bit ridiculous but I was determined to get my hair cut so I said ok. I came back in an hour, at 3:50pm, and they told me it was time for lunch and that I should come back at 5pm.
I walked out of the store and Ill never be back. They were so casual about telling me all of this, like it was a totally normal experience for a customer to go through. Def wouldnt let someone so careless with custie service go near me with a pair of scissors.
The «service» I received combined with the price is pretty laughable. I cant believe there arent more barber shops in the immediate area, this place would hardly be any competition.

I moved to NY recently and was looking for a new hairstylist (barber?) to match the great one I had in L.A. I was also looking for something comparatively priced to my L.A. place ~$ 30. I found this place and decided to give it a try.
I have to say that although the guy who cut my hair was a nice guy, he didn’t do a very good job. There was absolutely no style to the cut. No layering or anything. It looks like I have a bowl cut. Also, they shave the back of your neck with a straight razor and he cut me. I was pretty bloody. He didn’t even give me a discount for doing that.
I can’t say that I won’t go back, because I’m not really down with paying $ 65 for a damn haircut, but I’m definitely going to look for another place. If you can recommend me one here, please do!

Probably the best barber shop experience I’ve ever had. Complete with a warm towel ending.

Awful. Had one of the worst haircuts of my adult life at this place. It was so bad that I had to fix it myself when I got home. The ears were completely uneven, to the point where the hair over my left ear was easily a quarter of an inch longer than on my right ear. Also, when I told the stylist what I wanted, she tried to talk me into something else.
Sorry, but I’m in my 30s. I don’t want a hipster-​y mullet. It looks ridiculous enough on hipsters.
This cut was so bad that I had to go to another stylist at a different place just to get a normal haircut. The person who fixed it was amazed at how amateurish the cut was that I’d gotten at Brooklyn General Barber.
I don’t remember the name of the woman who gave me the awful cut, but she’s originally from L.A. and seems to have way more interest in chatting than in actually giving you a good haircut. Avoid.

Brooklyn General Barber is a terrific, little, old fashioned barber shop with a funky bent that is an affordable, apropos fit for my neighborhood and my family. I generally have to take my man kicking and screaming to get his hair cut, (he shaves his head in summer and come December I’m dragging him in there for the Pre-​Christmas family holiday parties cut so no one asks the next day who the scary hippy was in the annual portrait) but this place takes all the drama and trauma out of it. The prices are moderate and the atmosphere is so much fun.
I recently had the grueling double duty of having to get both my nephew’s and my niece’s hair cut, that were visiting from suburbia. (Ass End of No Where, NJ to be exact.) I wanted to send her home with «city girl «hair, and needed the dude to get his mop in order. I lucked out because the day we went in the owner was there to guide me in the right direction of which butt to put in whose barber’s chair. (I have my hair done at the owner’s other establishment, Mousey Brown; but sorry family, your cuts are going to be on the working man’s budget!)
So, we came in and I pulled her aside to ask who would be the best fit for our needs. It was decided to put my niece in the capable hands of Yuri. He took her long scraggly hair and turned it into a smart, flippy, long bob that actually made her fine head of hair look like a luscious mane a la That Girl. SO cute, and only 25 dollars. Meredith put my nephew’s hair in the hands of Nazzy. He went in like a feral beast and came out like a lamb. Smooth, groomed, neat; but not «done» looking. It’s the best 30 bucks he has ever spent on a hair cut, (and at those prices, he gave me $$$ toward it too! ahh fiscal responsibility!).
If I could give this barbershop 10 stars, I would. Hats off to Meredith for having the best 2 hair salons in the neighborhood that provide something for everyone’s needs. See you guys again the beginning of December when I show up dragging my dirty hippy behind me.

This is based on my 3^rd visit. There used to be a guy that was great, but he left. Everyone after that… made me wear a hat. For $ 25 for a guy-​haircut, you can do much better elsewhere.

This place has no right calling itself a barber shop when they cant give a straight razor shave. There are plenty of real barbershops within walking distance that cost ¼ of their price and give the same cut. My hair is generally buzzed on the sides and what little I have left up top gets trimmed for two seconds with scissors… they charge an extra $ 10 to pick up their scissors to trim my balding top for two seconds. Plus they had a tude from the get go… a catty kathy kinda look. Not a pretty dress to wear. A real barber should come tear their barber’s pole down. Get outta my hood.

Cheap? Somewhat. Fast? blindingly so. Worth it? Not at all.
I needed a basic haircut– just a trim. I came in, asked for short sides and ½ to ¼ inch off the top. Ten minutes later I was left with a generic cut, much shorter than I asked for (it’s about an inch shorter on top).
For $ 15 I can get my hair cut in Clinton Hill (the guy even spends 45 minutes crafting your cut). I was expecting something more cutting edge, maybe even something that uniquely fit my face or personality. Instead I ended up with one of the five haircuts the guy knows how to give in ten minutes.

This place has changed over the past few months, and not for the better. I have seen a handful of second chair barbers come and go, making it hard to keep a steady barber. The shop has been keeping sporadic hours, closing randomly on days when it should normally be open. I have faithfully been going to this barbershop for over 2 years but after my last experience will not be going back. They don’t accept appointments and work on a first-​come, first-​severed basis. After waiting at the barbershop for 10 minutes, Tamir answered the phone and scheduled an appointment ahead of me and then told me that my wait would now be over an hour. What happened with «We see clients on a first come, first served basis?» When I questioned Tamir on his 30 minute call-​ahead policy he becomes very defensive, rude and obnoxious. I was a paying customer and I will not be going back.

Solid haircut. My fifth time. I prefer Tamir to the other barbers.
However, it was $ 30 bucks this time around.
Sigh.
Not worth the haircut.
I kept making excuses each time about the price. I’m afraid the last price raise sent me back to the $ 15 spots.

Just got back from what is the worst haircut of the past 3 years. I’ve had $ 5 haircuts look better. I was there before a couple months ago and had Yury (sp?) cut my hair. Fantastic job, the reason I went back and the only reason im not flunking this place.
Magda cut my hair today. She combed my ears so many times it left marks that I found when I got home. Bad cut, facing away from the mirror so you really have no say in whats going on. Too fast. Asked for a scissor cut, Still used clippers. She asked for no input on the cut after the original «how do you want it.» Very awful barber, stray hairs everywhere. Not normally one to complain, but this was pretty bad.
Make sure you request Yury. Tall, thin guy with black hair.

I wanted to like this place and this guy, but the cut was super fast and the chair was kept rotated away from the mirror the whole time, even when it was done and the barber was asking if it was good… I had to strain my neck to look in the mirror and check out the cut. But the kicker was that the guy managed to cut the back of my neck with his straight razor not once, but TWICE! And he didn’t even apologize or acknowledge it. For $ 25 bucks I can get a hell of a better cut and not lose any blood.
I do love that they had reggae playing… hence the second star!

This place is adorable. I called ahead to schedule an appointment for my boyfriend to have a haircut. the guy was very nice on the phone and told me they didn’t take appointments but that he would put my boyfriend on the list. when we got there it was pretty busy but we were only waiting a few minutes. Tamir is so awesome at cutting hair, he’s like Edward scissor hands. he took literally 5 minutes to transform my boyfriend’s birds nest into a master piece. The best part is that it’s affordable and they give you coupons for your next visit :) def coming back

Tamir gives a good cut and is a super nice guy.

This place is soo cute — looks like an old-​time barbershop from the 40s or something, there’s lots of cute kitschy toys and curiosities for sale here, and the cuts are pretty good! My boyfriend got his hair cut here and it looked really good — wish I knew the barber’s name — he was a super cool guy — we had a great time chatting & laughing with him. I really like this place and I think they do a great job on men’s haircuts. (I think w/​tip Todd paid about $ 20-​ish for his haircut) Will update this review when I find out what the stylist/barber’s name is.

For Williamsburg this is probably one of the most reasonably priced haircuts you can find if you don’t mind not having the salon routine.
It’s cute, open late, and the barber was really nice. Magdelena I believe her name was.

Upon entering this 2 year old barber shop, you really feel like you’ve walked into a 1950’s «emporium», as they call it. This is old school. It’s got one chair, and one airplane chair for the kids. One wall is lined with old school candies like Double Bubble Gum, Rock candy, and Adams Gums, as well as cool T-​shirts and Books on pirates. The barber Lana was bumping XP Reggae, and was super friendly.
The cut itself made me look a few years younger, but definately was needed. The cost is $ 30 for an average male’s haircut, and takes about 20 minutes. They don’t take reservations, but you can walk in and sign «The List», and stop back in when you think you’re due. I recommend it for anyone looking for a good haircut in a cool environment.
