History

Established in 1886.

«One of the oldest private schools in New York, the Berkeley Carroll School has a long and illustrious history. Though officially chartered by the state on April 12, 1886 as a school for the education of young ladies, the school can trace its origins to 1883 and a series of informal classes held by the Rev. Alfred C. Roe for neighborhood children. A year later the Berkeley Institute enrolled 55 children. One of the founding schools of the Parents’ League in 1913, the school developed an outstanding reputation, with graduates receiving entry to Vassar, Mount Holyoke, Smith, Wellesley, and Radcliffe, among others. In the mid-1970s, boys were admitted for the first time.

As it celebrates its 120th anniversary, Berkeley Carroll continues to be a dynamic community sustained by a passion for learning and supported by an enviable teacher-to-student ratio of 1 to 7. The richness of the institution stems in part from its commitment to diversity: 25% of the student body are students of color.»
