BAM Rose Cinemas

I came here years ago for a concert Jay Z had in Brooklyn, it was actually his first concert in BK. I walked in the same space and it just seemed so much bigger.
When i watched the dancing it reminded me of Elementary days. Those of you who attended Schools that had African dance classes get my drift. It was a great experience to hear the sounds of the drums and watch the women and men dance. I read a book by Chinua Achebe called «Things Fall Apart» and he referenced the men and women in the Villages dancing to tribal music and everyone watching as they told our history through dance. As long as you can remember the dance you never forget your people.
At the end they used a picture of water i guess to symbolize the Middle Passage… We crossed the Atlantic Ocean to get here so it was a great way to end the show. This was a great show and i wished I went back to see it again.
The show is in fact 2 and half hours long with one intermission. So if you suffer from any anxiety i suggest you leave during intermission.

beautiful cinema and performing arts theater, great indie selections not available where i reside w/​quaint setup and low key atmosphere to duck into. sights /​sound /​seats /​setup were good. i like these smaller production theaters as this place houses inside one of brooklyns finer institutions

Indie films and documentaries? Then you are in the right place. I’ve been here a few times. Most recently I went for the caribbean film fest. There was a great Q&A after. If you have a membership, you get a discount on tickets. I strongly recommend supporting our local cultural establishments.

I’ve been a movie nerd since I was a kid. My dad would always watch horror/​thriller movies and he would always ask, «who did it?». I was trained to figure out the culprit in every film.
And I haven’t found my spots to watch movies in NY. That being said, I’ve been wanting to go to BAM Rose Cinemas in my quest for my favorite NY theater. When BAM announced their Witches’ Brew series highlighting films like Hocus Pocus, Häxan, Witches, the Craft (a fave) and Suspiria, I was ecstatic.
Suspiria was the must in my book. Most of the films I watched a million times. Suspiria is a classic, horror, Italian film and definitely one of many Dario Argento’s masterpieces. This film is a must in a theater atmosphere. The evening showing was sold out almost instantly. It would have to be a matinée. I actually do enjoy matinees especially rainy Sunday afternoons. This was a chilly Saturday afternoon but good enough. The matinée prices are also only $ 10. A steal when it comes to NY. 15 minutes ahead of the movie and it was already packed. The show sold out. I loved the intimate space. There was also free buttons for the Witches Brew event with the wicked protagonists.
The film was stunning, eerie, beautiful and truly brilliant. People found so many scenes funny. The dialogue is on the campy/​kitschy side but that only adds to the masterpiece in my book.
I forgot my favorite thermos and had to ride allllll the way back. And they had it waiting for me right at check in.
I can not wait to see even more movies here!

The theaters are small, but upstairs, in the Rose Café, it’s gorgeous. The lights transcend you to a different place. I imagine this is how heaven would welcome you. It’s a really beautiful space for events. I’d definitely go to an event or lounge like this.

This is a great space, love how they’ve kept the old feel to the place yet upgraded to the times. The upper level is beautifully decorated especially the huge windows. Look forward to coming here again in.

BAM Rose Cinemas is a very cozy theater with comfortable seats, quality projection and audio and, most importantly, a great selection of films. I saw Boyhood here with my wife and we’ve wanted to come back ever since. If only we’d prioritize going to the movies more often, I think you might just run into us here! The best seats in the house are in the middle, not unlike most theaters, however due to the short and wide layout there are not as many available. There’s a ton of great things to do and places to eat in the area so it’s not hard to call this a destination cinema.

I recently used my new BAM membership to get half off movie tickets ($ 7 — thanks ny id). The movie theater we went into (#3) had a good sized screen but we were forced to sit up front (too close for my liking) since the theater was packed (it’s pretty small). I don’t know if that’s normally the case or the fact that we went on a saturday.
You should note — the showtime of the movie is the actual time the movie starts, and not the time the preview starts. Previews run before the showtime so don’t arrive 10 minutes late as you normally would with other movie theaters.

Have been going to arthouse cinema in NYC for 15 years. But for some reason never went to this place until recently. Wow, what I’ve been missing! Loved it. Beautiful place. Very civilized crowd. I will be coming back.

Love that they offer real drinks in addition to the regular move theatre fare. Its always clean, staff helpful, and honestly the people who go to see movies here aren’t obnoxious. You wont have to put up with talking, texting, interruptions for the sake annoying people, laser pointers, and distractions. I do wish they had a larger selection of movies and more show times available, but its cool that they show so many indie films too.

After getting my NYC ID card (if you dont have one get it. You can get 1 yr memberships to most NYC cultural institutions as well as movie discounts) I came here to get my free yr membership for the half price movie discount. This is the only place where you have to wait weeks to get your card and they wouldnt give me a temporary card so having made it here and wanting to see the movie playing on that day I stayed and waited for the box office to open only to find out there was a server issue and it wouldnt be playing. Pretty shabby first visit but undaunted I returned a few weeks later after receiving my membership card, this time to see The Martian. I was running a bit late so had to skip the concession but I see they have cookies from Baked so thats a big plus.
I love the fact they did not show any commercials. Just a few trailers. Thats a big plus. Also after my talky crowd at AMC 34^th last week the quiet and respectful crowd here was very much appreciated. The film itself was fantastic and that of course added to the enjoyment. The seating was not stadium but the theater wasnt packed so I had nobody in front of me so no problem there.
All and all after my first rocky experience I will surely be seeing lots of movies here as it is only a few train stops away on the D, has well mannered crowds and half price is the right price.

Decent little theater. Love that it shows the harder-​to-​find movies!

I hate going to the movies these days. I love going to the movies. I love seeing interesting things projected on big screens with engaged audiences. I hate crying babies and morons with laser pointers and idiots who think they’re in their living room or at a bar. I hate most theaters.
BAM is different. The movies they show tend to attract better crowds, I guess? People aren’t giant assholes. The films are good. The seats are mostly great. They aren’t dicks about us smuggling in a metric assload of popcorn and two bottles of wine which we never do. The prices are totally reasonable if you’re a BAM member.
This place kicks ass.

They show new indie movies mixed with events like their current spectacular 80s series with the likes of «sex, lies and videotape» and «River’s Edge.» A star-​studded «Kicking and Screaming» showing brought Parker Posey, Josh Hamilton and Chris Eigeman to BAM, and I had the honor to meet Brooklyn legend Noah Baumbach in person. My quip about the similarity between me and the «Greenberg» protagonist made the encounter awkward enough to be a scene in a Baumbach movie.
The only downside is the men’s room. The urinals look like they were designed in 1936 and have to kept in place due to their landmark status.

One of my favorite theaters. Has never been disappointed with any aspect of performance. Always clean, Staff is always so incredibly sweet.
I love their choice of older films, especially during their themed festivals. I just recently became a member because I was visiting so often! 100% recommend-​go out of your way for this place.

This is a great place to see a film — the theaters have good sound and sight lines. The building itself has gorgeous aesthetics that most movie theaters in the city don’t have. On top of that, it’s right by Atlantic Center so it’s easy to get to by public transportation.
The theaters themselves are a bit small, which I think is actually a positive thing, but a lot of the showtimes can sell out so make sure you get there a bit early to get a good seat.

Bam Rose Cinemas is a great space to see movies and support the arts. I’ve been going to Bam Rose Cinemas for years and I would encourage you to take in a movie there real soon.

So…
1. there’s no huge stadium style seating
2. the snacks/​food offered are nothing special
3. while i love convenience of buying tickets online, I’m not a fan of the $ 1.50 surcharge. Buying online reduces labor, why does it cost more ?
Despite this i really enjoy watching movies here for two reasons:
1. They always have the movies that interest me. Usually 2 or 3 at the same time.
2. the audience. I’ve never encountered serial texters. constant chatterers or unruly kids here. This theater tends to attract an audience that seriously enjoys film. I’m far from a film aficionado, but appreciate an audience that is well mannered at the movies.
If it wan’t for surcharge this would be a 5 star theater.

I have never not enjoyed the films I have watched here. Perhaps it’s the fine selection of documentaries and indie flicks that BAM shows. Or perhaps it’s my refined taste. Don’t make me choose.
Actually, the only time this place kinda stinks is when you see a show that is booked. Then man, you better get here early and sit on your hands or something. The popcorn is alright.

This is my favorite cinema in the neighborhood.* It’s not just because they have a carefully curated selection of films that includes:
–topical local selections (think Central Park Five)
–excellent indies (think Fruitvale Station)
–nostalgic favorites (think The Secret of Nimh, Enter the Dragon)
–things you didn’t know existed but might enjoy (think Live Action Puppet Shorts)
–the mainstream flicks you actually want to see (think Wolf of Wall Street or Inside Llewyn Davis)
It’s also because the cinemas here are actually clean, civilized places. If I was to drop my jacket on the floor here I would pick it up, rather than assume it was lost forever, permanently stuck there by a horrifying amalgam of soda residue and bodily fluids.
Also, the online ticket purchase/​pickup is so quick and painless. I don’t understand why I pay a surcharge for something that’s easier for everyone involved, but I do like never having to speak to an actual person.
The worst things you might encounter here are (1) pretentiousness and (2) a pothead knocking over a Wet Floor sign, and the painfully awkward laughter that ensues. The former people usually keep to themselves though. And the latter… wasn’t me. I swear.
