Argyle Yarn Shop

Great yarn shop with a large selection of yarn, string, needles and the like. The two employees at the shop were very knowledgeable and helpful, as well as accepting of my lack of knitting knowledge. I came in with a pattern, needle size and yarn size in mind and the woman that helped me directed me to some yarn that fit my preferences. I asked for some in a similar size with a smaller amount and she showed me some of the yarn that was on sale. I got 1 skein (148 yards) of Patons Shetland Chunky yarn and a pair of US 10 (6mm) needles. The needles were $ 6 and the yarn was $ 7.50 with 20% off. I’m happy with these prices and will 100% be going back for my yarn and string needles.

The lady behind the computer always seems mad or annoyed. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her
smile. The supplies are only just okay. I think I’ve made my last trip there ever. I get better service and much more personable people at other shops.

Just been there yesterday and got my first pair of yarns. Very kind staffs, helped me choose my beginner yarns, they got all sorts of yarns and crochet tools, I find their price to be fair (not sure about yarn prices but good enough for me). And I heard they offer crochet classes as well.

Great selection of yarns at every price level. Helpful staff and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. Very nice store.

If I lived near this store, I would probably be happier with it as my LYS. I made it out there to check them out because they are the only store in the state to carry Quince & Co, so I was disappointed to see that they did not carry the full color range. Not even close. It isn’t that they are short on room, either – they have the space for it. Perhaps they do not want to carry too much inventory? Either way, the colors they tend to carry are in the drab pastel range, and I was specifically looking for some Sparrow to complete a project. I guess I will just have to order it online.

I love this place. Honest, helpful, and polite. I came here for beginning knitting classes about a year ago. The teacher was very through, and I really walked away thinking I got a good understanding of how to start to knit. I am thinking of taking classes again and when I called to sign up for the same beginner class because I don’t remember ALL of what I learned last year, they didn’t try and sell me on the same class, but suggested I take the next level class which would actually save me money. I appreciate the consideration and reassurance.

Anyone who loves knitting will tend to love all yarn shops by definition, but I really think this one is special. Brooklyn is a giant place, and yet it has a real dearth of all things crafty, in particular yarn shops. You tend to get your yarns in one of two ways — purely acrylic, not-​very-​good yarn from a dollar store or high-​end, can’t afford to make more than one baby bootie yarn from some extravagant place. This is the yarn shop for the people! Excellent selection of yarns at all price points and some really beautiful things that won’t break the bank (but also some even MORE beautiful things if you want to splurge). They’ve got a super friendly and approachable staff that are a joy to chat up and learn from and will help you in a very easy way get what you need.
Argyle also has a very nice frequent buyer program — I don’t know many stores that provide this. I can’t remember the exact details but suffice to say after you spend a certain amount on yarn, you get something in return! A discount, a freebie, some such thing. What’s not to like!

A nice place with nice staff and more space than any Manhattan yarn store. Tidy, clear organization, covers all the standard weights, the usual yarns, it’s all good, other than always being a few blocks further south than I remember.
I haven’t had as much luck here with colors I like or Malabrigo options, so I prefer delightfully messy Knitty City. I can see why others would prefer Argyle though.

Solid selection and excellent teacher for classes.

Three stars for it being «the only game in town» (only yarn shop in Windsor Terrace). LIke another reviewer, I find the customer service weak – one of the owners is always behind the counter and, when the shop is not busy, barely looks up from her computer. ‘Welcoming”, ‘friendly’ must apply only when the shop is empty (actually, now that I realize it, that is the problem — I only get service when I’m the only one there).
I always seem to get one sentence answers to my questions and then… nothing. No
«anything else», etc. Not very intuitive about customer service.
Also didn’t tell me all the supplies that were needed for a workshop.
Otherwise, nice selection of good yarns, clean, well-​lit, etc. Just, something missing…

Love this place! I feel like I’m in a candy store when I come here. Awesome selection of yarn and patterns. There are also classes. Everything is so so well-​organized. The people are super friendly and helpful too.

This is my go to and favorite yarn store if I can’t make it to Lion Brand (which is rightfully Mecca for yarn) on my lunch break in the city. Or if I’m simply at home on the weekend or whatever because its either a 2 stop train ride for me or a little bit of walk over. Very friendly staff and honestly pretty affordable prices in comparison to some other small business knitting stores. They also have a much wider selection than other small knitting/​craft stores in Park Slope/​South Slope, Cobble Hill area etc. You can get both fairly cheap synthetic stuff and luxurious soft woolly stuff and I love that aspect.

This place is great! My main gripes with local yarn shops are that they don’t have enough of a selection and what they do stock is too expensive. Argyle does a better job than most on both fronts. They stock all the usual premium yarns you’d expect to find and have a small but adequate budget section. If they expanded that a little bit, I’d give them five stars. While I can usually find a suitable yarn there for any project I’m working on, I sometimes have to compromise on the color I had in mind in order to find a yarn that will work.
I’ve also noticed that they often only have a few skeins of the yarns they stock, which is a minor nuisance. They’re happy to order stuff in but it’s not as convenient as being able to collect it all at once (plus, repeat visits are dangerous to my budget, although good for their profits!).
The staff are all knowledgeable and happy to spend time explaining things and helping you find the right products. Last weekend, I needed help deciphering an ancient pattern from the 1970s, which was written before the standardization of needle sizes. Despite the fact that this was one of their busiest days, they spent a good 15 minutes looking up the pattern on the internet for me (my phone had inconveniently died) and trying to work out the modern equivalents. I appreciated them going the extra mile for me. I’ve also seen them explaining basic techniques to novices.
The location is also great — within walking distance of Park Slope, Windsor Terrace and Kensington (just about), which I know from my experiences with the local knitting club all have a high concentration of knitters. If business isn’t already booming for Argyle, it’s only a matter of time before it will be.
The only place where I see a lot of room for improvement is their website — while they list the yarns they stock there, they don’t give any information about the colors they have in or the weights of the yarns. Some photos and a bit more information would be useful. If I have a specific yarn in mind for a project, I’d prefer to be able to check they have it online before walking down to the shop. However, when I emailed them with this comment they helpfully sent me a list of yarns by weight. Provided I’m not looking for a specific yarn in a specific color, this will solve the problem.
Regardless, Argyle is the best yarn shop in the area at the moment.

Highly recommended! In fact, just go there now. When visiting Brooklyn I found this wonderful shop. Not only do they carry my favorite yarn, Quince and Co, but the couple who own Argyle are so nice, knowledgable, accommodating and altogether wonderful. It was so nice walking out of a store with a bag full of Quince Osprey knowing that I got to buy it from great people. Later in the week I realized I needed more yarn so I called them for more and the yarn arrived on my doorstep the next day!!! Two-​thumbs way up!

Wow! Such a wonderful yarn shop! I stumbled in for some white sock yarn and stumbled out with MUCH more… woops. :) The cute couple who own (?) this store are so helpful! They have an amazing database to help you find what you need. For instance I wanted some purple/​orange variegated yarn for a baby gift and they were able to pull up every yarn in the store that fit that description. SO HELPFUL. Also, the store is beautiful and cozy. And they have a fantastic selection at many price points. I can’t wait to go back.

Thank you, Unilocal,for directing me to this lovely store. I first went pre-​Christmas to buy a pattern book and some yarn to finally make my husband a sweater (boyfriend sweater curse lifted!). The shop was bustling barely an hour after opening on Saturday, yet the two shop owners (a man and woman… not sure if they are related?) were carefully checking in with each customer, answering questions, giving advice, etc. The atmosphere was extremely inviting — much better than some snobbier shops I have visited.
Upon checkout I mentioned that I was in need of a class in entrelac, as my attempts to teach myself were failing miserably. What luck! They had just scheduled one for January! The class was $ 50, but considering my other option was $ 70+ at the Vogue knitting convention, I decided to give Argyle a try. The class was fantastic. Kate was patient, encouraging, and really let the knitters go at their own pace, just checking their work as they went along to make sure nothing went awry. A quick note for those who take classes: The classroom is in the back and has these lovely windows onto a little patio. Although this leads to lovely light in the room, it was chilly during the class. Make sure you wear long sleeves to avoid needing to bundle up in your coat!
I can’t wait to go back for more classes and more yarn (but no more yarn until I finish some of my stash!).

This place is beautiful and warm. Everything a beginner knitter could want. It has a great atmosphere and there is a man who works here that has a lovely personality and is very helpful.
Just don’t ever bring your kids there and I’m sure this could be said for a lot of stores like this. I spent more time saying ‘don’t touch’ than being able to pour over their gorgeous yarns. I know a lot of moms that knit. A little kids table with an abacus on it would suffice.
