i brought my dog in and just like the reviewer below me, they kept my dog for days and we agreed on a set price, long story shot… they kept changing things over and over that need to be done, no one had answers, yet the price kept escalaitng higher and higher. They even went as far as REFUSING to give me medication when sending the dog home, and were blatantly cornering me with threats that they need to proceed to a whopping 3000 $ surgery with ZERO explanations that were NOT even based on any pathology reports.
This was beyond a frustrating experiene and in the end my dog left with me in a taxi sick, because they were so non compliant and unreasonable. I will pay, but explain to me dont threaten me.

I love this place! I am a repeat visitor to this establishment. I will not take my dog anywhere else. The staff is extremely helpful and nice. They truly love all animals here. They treat my poodle as if she was their own. My dog had several procedures done here and all were very successful. The doctors are very knowledgeable in veterinary medicine. I also board my baby here when I take vacation. I feel 100% comfortable leaving her here while I am away. In the past few years they’ve also acquired a groomer on the premises and they always groom my baby to satisfaction. As long as I have pets and live in NYC, Animal Medicine and Surgery will be my one stop place for the care of my precious pet.

This the most unprofessional establishment I have even been to. I brought my dog in after he had been vomiting they said he would have to stay the night, I called the following day and was told they are still trying to figure out what was wrong with him and he would have to stay an additional night so they can run test. When I tried to visit my dog I was told visits were not allowed I couldn’t even see where they kept him. Day 3 I call and yet again no one has answers, they haven’t diagnosed my dog so they can’t tell my why he had to be kept there for 3 days. I did some research on Dr Ronald Chalkin and saw that he had many complaints and was also featured the NY Daily Newspaper for acts of animal horrors. He was fined 10 thousand dollars and suspended for 2 years. After 3 days I went to the vet to get some answers and was greeted by Dr Chalkin who went into a violent outburst when I brought up his records and my concerns for my Dog. He threatened to hit me told me to «get my dog and the F– out of his office». My dog was there from Tues –Fri i paid over $ 800 but no diagnosis, no treatment, when they finally brought him to me he looked like he was in worse condition then when we brought him in, he was visibly shaking and drastically thinner. I asked again to see where they kept him for 3 days and was told I couldn’t. Immediately after leaving that disgusting office I took my dog to a real animal hospital and was told my dog was dehydrated among other things. I am now looking into suing doctor Chalkin for negligence and if you care anything for your pet please do not bring them here. I’ll provide the link to the feature of doctor Chalkin in the New Paper. If you don’t believe me do a quick google search I’m surprised he is still in business.

My little kitten got fleas. Not sure how since she doesn’t leave the house and she’s they only pet in the house. Took her here to get checked out since she hadn’t had a vet visit since being spayed at the ASPCA. $ 486 for visit, checking to make sure she didn’t develop tapeworms from eating fleas, flea bath and staying overnight while I treated the house. Sold me a spray for $ 45 that I found online from 13.99−17.99 (same size and brand). They also told me to use the spray on the floors which would be fine except I specifically stated I don’t have carpet, I have wood floors and the instructions on the spray itself said not to use on wooden furniture or flooring. Treated the house. Waited a few days and treated her with the meds (effipro) and now a week and a half later, still seeing fleas, still being bitten myself, she’s still scratching like crazy so that $ 486 was money well spent. Poor kitten acted traumatized when she came home, would barely come near me. Strangest reaction ever from my formerly affectionate and playful girl. One positive thing was that someone from the office called to check on how she was doing the day after I brought her home. Not a happy cat momma.

THE WORST!!! My dog went in for an exam. They told me they wanted to take blood. They brought my dog into the back room and I was upset about that so I followed only to see the techs arms around my dogs neck and my dog was choking. I cant tell you how upset I was, I started yelling and took my dog and left. I would never use this place again. I found an excellent vet in Sheepshead bay with all the latest equipment.

I love and trust this place. Avenue L Animal Clinic is a one-​stop shop for me and very conveniently located, being less than a mile from my home. The clinic serves as my dog’s vet, boarding facility, as well as grooming parlour. What more can a girl ask for? Other than the seemingly higher end pricing for annual vaccinations (which is probably the case with most, if not all vets), the rates here are pretty reasonable. The boarding rates are actually unheard of for my pet! Not to mention the periodic email specials that clients are sent for vaccinations, grooming, etc.
The staff is also willing to work with you in terms of payment and within reason, which I appreciate. I just cannot say enough great things about the friendly secretaries, assistants, and of course the veterinarians who have both handled my shih-​tzu/​bichon frise mix. There are always tons of people at the clinic with their pets whenever I bring her in… another good sign. Chloe is in terrific hands here and I do not think twice about this fact. Truly a diamond in the rough.

Luckily for me I got there early on a Saturday, because shortly after arriving it quickly got crowed. But once inside everything moves pretty fast, and you get a lot of feedback about your pet which I appreciated. The next day I got a follow up call to see how my pup was doing, It was to see that they really look out for your pet. It’s always comforting to know that your pet is in safe hands.

Absolutely love the staff here and the patience they have for my scaredy cat 9 yr old lab mix, Zeus and my little nervous Maltese, Jozie. You guys are great. We will be back soon!

Even when the place is empty, they make you wait like 20 – 30 minutes while staff go to store & cigarette breaks. They charge according to how much they think you love your pet enough to pay. They try to get a minimum of $ 150 – 200 from all customers per visit although it’s around $ 55 just for vet to see your pet & suggest other expensive services they offer. I’ve had pets all my life & unless it’s something serious, I suggest you research your pets condition on the net with possible solutions before going here. 95% of the time you can find the same solution or medicine online as the doctor will suggest for hundreds or thousands less. These doctors here have suggested expensive treatments for my pets without even asking me anything about them & little to NO examination.

I’ve been going to this vet for years, with a mean rottiweiler and a sweet beagle and they handled both. Dr. Chalkin is cool and handles the dog with care. He knows exactly what’s the problem is if any. They are way cheaper then these vets in L.I. I barely had an appointment and it was never a problem for them to be seen by the doctors. My roti won’t let you come 6inches in front of him, if he didn’t know you but never had a problem with dr. Chalkin, he took care of him since he was a pup. The medical assistants were good, friendly and kind to my dogs. I stopped going because I moved to Long Island and wished I didn’t stop going to this vet office. I’ll be going back that’s for sure. Actually there were two doctors there when I was going and they were both excellent doctors. Wish they were in L.I., lol ;)

Living in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, I have easy access to dozens of vets and the ²⁴⁄₇ Animal Medical Center. I just don’t trust any other vet besides Dr. Chaikin. It sometimes takes over an hour to drive to his office in traffic, but it is a drive worth dealing with for honest, affordable, and urgent medical care. I adopted my dog (Chow Chow) through a
ad in 2003. My dog was rescued from a kill shelter by Dr. Chaikin and his office manager, Arlene, who took such great care of her, and continue to do so, 8 years later. I once received a very expensive and incorrect diagnosis (degenerative myelopathy) from another vet, which, had I followed that vet’s orders, would have resulted in very costly experimental surgeries that I believe would have rendered my dog permanently crippled and ultimately would have ended terribly by way of euthanasia. A simple blood test at Dr. Chaikin’s office revealed a thyroid disorder, which was easily treated with a daily dose of l-​thyroxine. The symptoms my dog suffered were due to a thyroid disorder but were also very similar to degenerative myelopathy. Just as with medical doctors, it is very important to get a second opinion, and even a third or fourth if you still aren’t convinced. Long story short, my dog has been on the thyroid medication (in addition to liver medication for liver disease) for over 2 years and is doing just fine. I do not believe she would be alive today had I not relied on Dr. Chaikin.

I have known Dr. Chaikin for about 30 years, and he has treated all of my animals; I wouldn’t trust them with anyone else. The entire staff is kind, helpful, and animal-​loving. In fact, I adopted my last cat from this clinic (someone had abandoned him as a stray, and they helped find him a home), and he is one of the sweetest animals I ever had. I’m sure that is due, in part, to the fine care he received from this staff when they took him in as a kitten. Their prices are very reasonable and more than fair, and only top of the line products are used here
(food, vaccinations, etc.). This is the only place I would eve consider boarding my animals, and I do often, since they treat my babies as if they were their own. My mind always is at ease when Dr. Chaikin and his staff treat my pets, because they treat them as if they were their OWN animals. You will never find a more caring, better –skilled staff.

I once went here for convenience. Big mistake. My dog at the time
was diagnosed with fractures of the left leg… surgery indicated. I
asked a simple question: how can you tell if you haven’t x-​rayed him
yet. I hope they changed their ways because this was several years
ago…but I saw the name and remembered my friend who brought
his very senior dog there and they wanted to do many, many tests,
workups, treatments and the dog was about 17. I listened to what
they wanted to do. I am a nurse and was familiar with much of it
and was amazed and some of the suggestions. Oh. my dog did
not in fact, have a fracture. I took him to Bath Beach
