A-Best Appliance Service

Bosch gave me A-Best’s info as a repair service for our fridge and dishwasher. The diagnostic guy came more than two hours after the repair window had ended, which by then was after 7:30pm. He didn’t apologize to me or even really acknowledge me when he finally showed up. They took a huge deposit for the work to be done. Then I heard nothing from them for weeks.
When I finally called to find out what was going on, I was told that the part was on backorder and it would be another several weeks before it arrived. No one had bothered to tell me this at any point. Finally, after I followed up again weeks later, they said it had arrived (how long before someone would have called me, I wonder?) and set up another appointment.
Again, the technician was late. When he arrived, he told me the dishwasher was installed incorrectly and he practically tore it out of the cabinets. Then he realized it didn’t even need to be removed because the part only needed to go into the door. He left in a huge rush, claiming he had a wedding to go to, and left the dishwasher pulled out and the door basically broken (though the washer itself still operates).
All this came at a cost of over $ 1000. If I had more time to deal with this company, I would insist that they come back and fix their terrible work since now our dishwasher looks unsightly, but I can’t sit around and wait for them one more time, plus they would probably try to charge me another $ 1000. I’ve had a lot of bad contractor experiences, but this one was the worst.

I had called A-​best after getting their number from the Fisher & Paykal website. They came in to inspect my double drawer dishwasher. The guy tells me to run dishwasher magic and it will clean it out so that it starts draining properly. Ok so I paid $ 150 bucks for the advice you could have given me over the phone. No problem as long as it solves the problem. I did what he said and the problem still persists. I was told if they need to come a second time they won’t charge the service fee and only for the parts replaced (if any). So now I’m calling them repeatedly only to be told that their service manager will call me back. I’ve waited patiently but no response. I have complained to Fisher & Paykal and hoping they can help me out. Very poor customer service. If they get their act together and fix my problem I will update the review.

Paid $ 160 for a guy to come in for 15 minutes and copy down a number to order a part for a broken freezer. Half the time he was here he was on the phone, and even walked out of the apartment while on the phone without saying anything. Very unprofessional, on top of the fact that he was also rather unfriendly, and answered my questions very curtly.
Two weeks later, no word. I called in to get an update, since we’re trying to fix things to rent the apartment out. Turns out the part wasn’t even ordered. Nobody informed us why there was a delay or of any updates. Then they told me that they needed simply more information in order to order the part. Apparently, I can’t find it and give this information myself over the phone, so they have to come again.
They gave me a 3-​hour window and even confirmed yesterday via phone and email, but the window is now over and I didn’t get a call about a late arrival or anything. So I called in. The repair guy is two appointments behind, and won’t get here for at least an hour or two.
Ok, so I get to fiddle my fingers, wait another hour or two, just for him to come in and copy a few numbers down for 5 minutes. Perfect time for me to write this review…
This is NEW YORK CITY. Every hour I have to wait in my apartment for somebody that doesn’t arrive is a waste of time and money, that can be better spent elsewhere with a different service — there are plenty of better and cheaper options.
I do understand delays happen as do mistakes, but to be reliable, you must communicate…
If I have to wait extra time, at least inform me. If there is a delay for a part being ordered, at least inform me. I don’t think it’s necessary for a customer to have to chase after their service provider for every step.
The lady on the phone was not very helpful. I was not asking for compensation or discount, but at least a little more effort.
Though they are good at confirming appointments, there’s no real customer concern or care enough to follow through.
A Best? They’re barely passing in my book. Two stars.

/​/​edit: They just called me saying the guy was on his way. 4:22pm. My building doesn’t allow work after 4:00. Lady on phone made it sound like it was my fault for not letting them know that earlier. I began to say «well, window was supposed to be 11 – 2, and I didn’t get any warning.» But she interrupted me to say «I know, I know.» I annoyed her, apparently, trying to do her job. Wish I didn’t have to…
I’m glad I took a day off MY JOB for this. Down to one star.
How have they been around for 18 years?!

/​/​edit: A nicer guy came in, apologized for the delay, and before he left, at least addressed what was done. Let’s see if the part is ordered or not. Maybe they can get another star back.

We had a problem with our Fisher & Paykel dishwasher that A-​Best came to repair in January. It’s now March and our repair has not been completed. They blamed the delay on receiving the wrong part from the manufacturer. They’ve had 2 months to get the correct part in.
It’s a $ 400+ part plus service fees. In the long run, it’s better to just buy a new dishwasher

Professional, friendly, and straightforward. At least in the world of appliance repair, I’m not sure you can expect any more than that. Probably not the cheapest option though.

The maintenance guy showed up on time and was very friendly. Price was understood well ahead of time since the problem and price of parts was researched independently before contacting A Best, so there were no surprises when it came to that. Problem arose after completing the fan installation and the Fisher & Paykel fridge had to be pulled out (in order to restart its computer by unplugging it), dents were left on the kitchen hardwood floors and what followed after the issue was addressed.
«I have a lot of customers like you, that try to get free work» was the service managers Eli B.‘s «hello» on the phone after my friend noticed the damage and refused to sign off the invoice saying «I won’t sign until we figure out what to do about the floors». Then after emailing Eli B. the photos of the damage he tried accusing her of lying about it and that the damage was there already. She told him it’s a four year old kitchen in a new construction building, so he decided to tell her the marks go out too far. She suggested she’ll measure the length of the marks and the dept of the fridge, no problem.
Basically after an all out yelling match with someone that’s supposed to be the main problem solver, they deducted $ 100 off the invoice and she just wanted this dude out of the apartment at this point.
What a nightmare for nothing! On top of it you’d think someone with experience of fixing expensive appliances in nice homes would take preventive measures to avoid creating damages while working. Not to mention what kind of way is that to resolve a problem caused by your employee? On top of it in a building that came standard with similar appliances in all apartments, where residents are apartment owners and mostly families that will be living in the same building for some time and in a building where all neighbors are friendly, know each other and would recommend your company to be the one to call for ongoing yearly maintenance works and inevitable repairs. You clearly could care less about returning customers, which is fine, but that’s some borderline abusive way to send that message. I feel really bad about any person who doesn’t take screaming and abuse well or keeps their cool under pressure until a problem is resolved that was unlucky enough to invite this company into their homes for repairs that are done at premium prices.
Will of course update the review if God forbid anything goes wrong with the actual installation.

Of the four authorized repair services LG recommended to fix a broken ignition on my dryer, A-​Best Appliance’s turned out to be almost double the price of the others. Unfortunately for me I found that out after already paying my $ 180 diagnostic fee, making it useless to cancel them and use one of the other services. When I called to complain the best they could do was to offer me a «first-​time user 10% discount.» So I ended up paying $ 400 on a $ 250 job. The work was good but price-​gougers in my opinion.

We had problem with our KitchenAid dishwasher — the door springs were broken so the door was falling freely. I saw YouTube video for DIY and parts are inexpensive, but we’re not brave enough so we called this company.

They don’t give a «estimate/​quote» in advance even though the issue is quite common. Just diagnosis for $ 160 towards to labor, no standard or any hint.
So until the guy comes and tells you the total cost, you’ll never know. Even you don’t like the cost, you got to pay $ 160. We paid about $ 280 and it was a bit more than other companies’ estimates.

Contacted this service to replace the broiler ignitor on my stove as it was advertised as a Viking specialist. A non Viking ignitor was installed without the benefit of a guarantee at 10x the cost of the part for which they offered no warranty claiming the part was «like a battery».

A wonderful experience! Bosch recommended A Best Appliance the day before New Year’s eve, when our (out of warranty) washing machine latch broke. Bosch couldn’t send anyone out with the part until January 14^th (I was horrified — two weeks with no machine!), so I emailed A Best Appliance, with not much hope in my heart to be honest. Someone from the company telephoned me that same day offering to send a repairman to us in Brooklyn the next day, New Year’s eve! I never expected a company to be looking at their emails so near to the holiday and certainly not to have someone ready to come. The huge, crucial difference was that this company confirmed they had the part we needed! I already knew the part number since I had asked Bosch — the part number and model details are helpful information to have. That ABAS asked for the model number and wanted all those details showed me they were totally trustworthy. Watch out for repair scams. Another repair company offered to come out on January 2^nd (later than ABAS), but would not confirm it had the part and was not willing to check — nor was it even interested in the make and model of the machine. Many dodgy repair companies charge a double call out — first to examine, then to order the part — a total scam if you know exactly what the problem is and know the part you need. Either way, we would not have had a repair until the first or second week in January. A Best Appliance carried the parts, came out the very next day and did the job wonderfully. The serviceman was friendly, he fixed our machine quickly and very well — he was thorough and did lots of checks — and gave me some handy free hints on care of our Bosch dryer too. The company’s charges were not cheap at initial glance, but since there was only one visit, the cost was the same or less than the cowboys who would have come out twice — first without the part, charged us just for coming and doing an examination, then ordered it and made us pay again when they came back. I will always use these guys in the future — finding an honest repairman in NYC is a scary business — I am happy to have found a good company. I would suggest that everyone telephone the official maker of their appliances and ask them to recommend a local company to fix things out of warranty.

I am an assistant for a professor in New York, and I have to make appointments, calls, etc. One was to get repair service for his dishwasher. Where other repair shops failed, A Best as THE BEST to get a hold of. Emailed me on their day off, and answered all my questions even though I don’t own the dishwaser. Talked to me about what the dishwasher might need and was more then great when it came to setting up an appointment.
Great customer service and they service Fisher & Paykels!
