When Pigs Fly

As I’m from the area of Maine where When Pigs Fly originated, I’ve been eating their bread since childhood, and still do for good reason. When you buy their bread at supermarkets, for bread, it’s good, but not excellent. However, when you get it fresh from a When Pigs Fly store, it is superb. Honestly, the best bread I have ever had. They also have great jams, and various dipping sauces/​oils for bread.

The bread selection is excellent (except when you show up 30 minutes before closing after work at 7:00 pm, but that is my fault). High quality bread and ingredients. I have never had a bad loaf of bread, and always 3 – 4 samples available to try, so I have probably tried them all by now.

I come here for all my bread needs. I’ve never had a bad loaf of bread here and the prices are reasonable. They have both sweet and savory options. Do yourself a favor and skip the bread at Trader Joes, walk a block west, and and spend the extra dollar on a real loaf of bread and support your local bakers too! The prices are very reasonable, and the quality is top notch. I love their free samples. TIP: the german sourdough bread is only $ 2 for a massive loaf on Wednesdays!

Not great bread, not sure why people keep going there with much better bakeries in Boston.

The smell of this bakery is so intoxicating that it completely draws you in. I came for good bottles of infused oil, and a loaf of sour dough. Delish. The woman working was such a sweet heart too, and very helpful. This place is also really good for gifts as well with their great oil selection. Great neighborhood spot

This is the place to go for heavy, moist breads. They make my favorite NY rye: flavorful, dense and filled with caraway. Their chocolate bread is rich and dark, more of a dessert than a breakfast bread, but surprisingly good. There is a large variety of both sweet and savory bread and the selections are creative, with the addition of various kinds of nuts, fruits and veggies. Prices are a bargain since the breads are very large and heavy and stay fresh for a long time. The Brookline location is a tiny underground spot and is rarely crowded. Free sample tasting of their breads are always available.

I guess you can buy loaves of When Pigs Fly bread in grocery stores across New England, but nothing beats walking into one of their storefronts and purchasing a fresh loaf of one of their signature creations. My current obsession? The wild blueberry granola with 8 grains. It’s a sweet and hearty creation which, topped with peanut butter and banana, makes for a delicious, filling and (somewhat) healthy breakfast.
I’m also a big fan of their jellies, especially the raspberry jalapeño – it’s sweet and spicy, just like me. ;) Pair it with a loaf of bread and some cheese, and you have yourself a match made in heaven.
$ 5 – 6 may seem a bit steep for bread and jelly, but sometimes the offerings at Trader Joe’s just won’t cut it. And you know what? With Parks and Recreation ending and unable to remind you, it’s even more important that you remember to TREAT YO SELF.
Bonus points for friendly service and free samples, two of my favorite things.

I love the smell of this bakery when I walk in. It smells like home. Its warm and cozy and the owners are really nice.
They provide a wide range of selection for the breads that they make which are fresh. They also provide they’re own recipe of spreads that are an amazing companion to the breads. I normally don’t like to buy bakery bread as I make my own, but I think I may have found my go to bakery. Its 30 – 35 minutes away from my home, I stumbled upon this gem when I got lost getting to Boston and now they’re never going to get rid of me!
My favorite thing which I suggest is the chocolate bread, the maple walnut bread and the potatoe and garlic bread. If you like to eat your breads adventurously, try them with the caramel butter! I garauntee you will delightfully surprised.

When Pigs Fly is by far the best bread I have had. Most Whole Foods sell this brand, but there is something special about heading over to a store that exclusively sells this bread. I think it’s slightly cheaper purchasing it here than at a super market and their selection is definitely greater, plus they often offer free samples!

Yes, the bread’s not your typical $ 1.99 Trader Joe’s or Shaws brand bread, but I think it’s worth every penny.
They have seasonal breads, and some of my favorite have been the maple apricot date, the potato and garlic, the orange cranberry, and the plain ol’ sour dough. I’ve yet to try their famous chocolate bread, but I’ll get to it soon enough, because another great perk is that they let you sample any of the breads, pretzels, and cookies you wish! The only «downside» to sampling is that you just can’t walk out of there without buying SOMETHING…
Use LevelUp when paying, and not a credit card. A) WPF is a small business, and every pass on transaction fees that credit cards make vendors pay is always a plus; and B) Level Up tends to give you some perks (ex. I got the sour dough for $ 2.00 because I had LevelUp credit — and this was my first time using it in store, too!).
Another good tip: if you go near closing hours, and you’re lucky enough to get a long-​time employee helping you, they usually let you leave with some free bread (usually leftovers from sample loaves). The two times I went there before closing time, I finagled an almost-​complete loaf of spinach bread the first time, and one-​third of a New York rye bread the second time — score!
WFP is definitely worth it. Ditch the Shaws brand, take a break from the TJ’s brands, and try this place out.

The maple banana walnut bread is delicious. Its $ 6 for a loaf, but the loaf is very large. It’s true that this loaf is a dollar or two more than one at stop and shop or a typical grocery store, but it is 10 times better — hands down.
Forget spending a buck at a vending machine for some chips and use that extra dollar to upgrade the bread in your life!

Ive always enjoyed WPF bread and their store in Brookline lives up to all their standards! The employees were extremely nice and helpful and the bread was perfect and fresh. Im enjoying an unreal roast beef sandwich on one of their ciabatta’s right now. So good.

Fresh, warm bread that’s sweet or savory, with the ability to try samples of as many flavors as you’d like. How can you not love it?
In addition to classics like plain bread or sourdough, some of my favorites include savory and herby options, or sweet varieties like chocolate-​chip bread and raisin-​nut bread.
While I typically buy their bread in-​stores at Whole Foods (for about the same price), it’s even better here at their Brookline shop for the sampling experience and the extra freshness.

We are so happy that we stumbled upon this bakery. We come here at least once a week to stock up on bread. I usually don’t eat a lot of bread but I just can’t help myself when I walk past this place. They have the most delicious selection of sourdough bread we’ve ever come across. They carry a bunch of different varieties but we would highly recommend the olive bread or their chocolate bread if you’re looking for something on the sweeter side.

I was in When Pigs Fly earlier today for the first time and immediately settled on the Banana Cinnamon Walnut Bread. OMG. I had to have my roommate take it away from me– it’s SO good.
This place is super cute and quiet. It could almost go unnoticed if you weren’t looking out for it. They had a wide variety of breads but the banana walnut caught my attention first. For only $ 6 for a whole loaf of this wonderful desert heaven, I feel happier than ever to help out a great local place.
Though this was my first time actually at the store, I have been eating their bread for years and always enjoyed it. Now that I have been and I live in the neighborhood, I will definitely be back for more delicious bread. YUMMM!

When Pigs Fly bakes amazing bread. They sell everything from basic whole wheat to chocolate bread to apricot date bread, as well as a few dessert items (blueberry bread pudding, for example). They literally carry 20 different breads every day.
All of the bread is baked at the main When Pigs Fly bakery in Maine and delivered fresh each day. The Maine bakery is certified kosher (KVH), so although the Brookline store is not under kosher supervision, you can call a day ahead and ask them to bag your bread before it leaves the bakery in Maine and it will arrive in a sealed bag certified kosher. Employees are very knowledgeable and happy to accommodate this kosher request.

I constantly walk by this place whenever I am in Brookline, and I constantly wonder: What does this place sell? When I first heard the name of this place, I thought they would sell pork, ham, veal, and/​or bacon. It turns out that their specialty is selling bread and cookies and not meat products made from pigs.
I learned that the term «when pigs fly» is actually an «idiom». It means that something is so improbable that it will not happen, because in the current and real world, pigs, unfortunately, cannot fly, unless they somehow were given the ability or if we put the pigs on a flying machine and teach them. From what I heard, «when pigs fly» was supposedly told to the founder of this place as he began to make some good bread for people.
I bought at least a couple of sliced loaves of sour dough bread here so I can make my own lunches. I used the bread with some ham, turkey, and fresh cheese that I bought from other markets, put some lettuce and mayonnaise, and I had a very simple and tasty sandwich. I really like the soft texture. It’s also a great bread for some toast. I toasted the bread for about a minute, put some butter and strawberry jelly on it, and I had one of the best breakfast toasted bread on a Saturday morning. I also used this toasted bread with some scrambled eggs and cheese, and I thought I had a really good homemade breakfast.
The cookies here are great. One cookie here, with some fresh cold milk should be enough for a heavy but really good snack. The texture of all cookies have the right amount of softness and usually had a great flavor. The Salted Caramel Triple Chocolate Chip is probably one of the most unique cookies. It had an interesting blend of saltiness, but the flavor and sweetness of the chocolate and the soft texture of the cookie made it one of the tastiest and memorable cookies I have eaten.
Overall, if you are looking for a decently good loaf of bread to make your own sandwich, or a pretty good cookie, this place is a good choice if you are walking around in the streets of Brookline. If I really need a key ingredient for a good homemade sandwich, I would probably come to this place. Also, the cookies here have been one of the most pleasant surprises I found in Brookline so far.

Not that this area needed to get any more awesome, but a Pigs Fly store definitely upped Coolidge Corner’s street cred. I love this location, too. It’s underground and almost feels like a little hobbit cave. Weird description, I know, but it’s got stonework on the walls and stuff.

Fantastic bread (dare I say better than Great Harvest in Oakland, RIP): hearty, nuanced, all that. And you can try anything you want. So don’t bother reading too many reviews here, just go and check it out.
For the record, I’ve only tried two, and loved them both (honey oat and corn meal pepper).

This place is perfect for a vegan on a quest for tasty bread. The ingredients are listed under the bread name. Easy to see if «eggs» are added (which, luckily, most of them don’t have any).
Free samples help sway the vote when on the fence about which bread to pick up for toast, or dinner, or snacking. Personal faves: Three Seed with Honey, Mango Pineapple Sesame, and Chocolate.
This place, like many local businesses, has started using the LevelUp program (if you have a smart phone, I can’t recommend it highly enough) so extra discounts make me more inclined to drop in.
Seriously, try here. Great bread, great staff, good atmosphere.
