Specialties

Gateway Arts is a non-profit arts center where artists with disabilities come to make art. In addition to providing professional art studios, our location also includes an outsider art gallery and a retail store.

The arts and crafts we sell are hand-crafted by artists with disabilities. Gateway artists get a 50% commission on the sale of the artwork, with the remaining profits going back into running the center.

Some of the items we sell include: Paintings, drawings, jewelry, clothing, stuffed animals, sculptures, ceramics (vases, mugs, sculptures), hand-woven items (rugs, pillows, purses), books, and much more!

The items we sell are completely unique and always changing. Come visit us to see what our artists have been working on lately!

History

Established in 1973.

Originally named Gateway Crafts, our program was once located in a small basement studio at 1291 Commonwealth Avenue in Allston and served 8 artists with disabilities.

In 1980, Gateway expanded its services and moved to its current location in Brookline Village, and included a professional, well-lit studio with a small on-site store. An additional 5,000 square feet of space was added in 1994 to accommodate an increased demand for services for people with psychiatric disabilities, autism, cerebral palsy, visual, hearing, cognitive impairment, and head injuries.

In 1995, we opened an on-site «outsider art» gallery — the first of its kind in Boston. In 2000, Gateway Crafts expanded again, opening the Gateway Crafts Store at 60 Harvard Street.
